SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 353,772, dated December 7, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SorPIo E. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spring held, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio,
5 have invented certain new and useful Iinprovements in Metallic Burial-Gaskets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in metallic caskets; and it consist, essentially, of an article of manufacture constituted of a castiron casket with ornamental panels and moldings, and with iianges to form a means of connecting the top and the lower ornamental skirt.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and on which similar letters of reference indicate the same or 2o corresponding features, Figure l represents a side elevation of my improved casket, Fig. 2, a transverse sectionall view of the same, and Figs. 3 and 4 detached sectional views of portions thereof.
The letter A designates the casket generally, the same consisting of east metal, whether of alloy or of thenatural mineral, iron being the preferred material. the casket is of a general taper from the bottom to the top, and for a suitable distance above the bottoni the portionl B of the sides stands somewhat toward the center,-leaving a longitudinal shoulder, C, along either side, which forms a seat for the upper end of the ornamental molding D. This molding willbe more particularly described hereinafter. The body or sides and ends of the casket are formed with a number of receding panels, F, between which are formed raised portions G, 4o which are iiush with the body of the sides. These panels serve not only to ornament the casket, but also the immediate function of strengthening the sides, thereby rendering it practical to construct the caskets very much thinner than could otherwise be done.
The reason that the panels afford additional strength is that their union with the sides generally of the casket forms a sort of angleiron. The upper portion of the casket, both along the sides and at the ends, is constructed in an ornamental form, consisting of mold.-
Thefgeneral contour of ings II and I. A flange, J, projects outwardly. around the entire upper edge of the casket and is formed with a vertical bead, K. This flange is provided with a series of screw-holes, and with a layer, L, of cement, as also with a rubber gasket, M, upon which a top, N, also constructed of cast metal, is fitted, and which has a depending edge or flange, O, which embraces the bead K. The screws P bind the top firmly down upon the rubber and the cement, and thus a tight joint is formed.
Referring back to the molding D, I would observe that it may be constructed of cast or sheet metal, and that the particular coniguration of it may be determined atpleasure. An essential feature of the molding, however, is the flange Q, which fits snugly under the shoulder R, formed in the manner already suggested, and to which it is secured bya series of screws, 7o S. This molding embraces the entire circumference of the casket, and is therefore of annular form.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Pat-ent., is-
l. As an article of `manufacture, a casket constructed of cast-iron and having receding panels and raised portions surrounding said panels, a shoulder around the lower portion 8o of the outer side thereof, an ornamental molding` fitted to said shoulder and extending around the casket, an ornamental upper portion constituting moldings and terminating in a flange at its upper edge, a vertical bead eX- tending around said flange, a top having a depending liange which tits around said bead, a filling of cement and a rubber gasket between the top and the flange of the body, and devices to secure the top and said liange.
2. The combination, with a casket having an annular shoulder on the outside thereof and near the bottom, of an annular ornamental molding having a iiange which fits said shoulder, and devices to secure the flange to the shoulder.
