Description
United States Patent 3,526,424 PAPER PICKER Julian Torres, 430 E. 158th St., Bronx, N.Y. 10451 Filed Mar. 18, 1969, Ser. No. 808,246 Int. Cl. A47f 13/ 06 U.S. Cl. 294-24 3 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An elongated member having an elongate-d prong disposed therealong and jawsor clamps for detachably grasping waste paper and the like associated therewith. Manually operable means open and close the jaws at will. Thus paper can be picked up and disposed of without bending and the like.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION An elongated member has an elongated prong disposed therealong and extendable beyond the lower end of the member to variable lengths. A pair of vertically spaced upper and lower paper seizing jaws are disposed along side of the prong beyond the bottom end of the member. Linkage means secured to the member and manually operable by a handle on the member moves these jaws into and out of engagement as desired.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a rear view of my invention; FIG. 2 is a side view;
FIG. 3 is a front view;
FIG. 4 is a rear detail view;
FIG. 5 is a detail front View; and FIG. 6 is a detail side view.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Referring now to FIGS. 1-6, an elongated vertical bar 10 has vertically spaced eyes 12 through which extend an elongated thin member 14 having a prong 16 at its bottom end. Prong 16 is rotatable about its own axis and has stops 18 extending at right angles in a bracket 20 whereby the prong can be moved up and down with respect to bar 10. Prong 16 can be used to stab paper and by its adjustment in length can be easily used by individuals. It is spring loaded at 42 whereby the movement is as shown in FIG. 4.
Two vertically separated upper and lower jaws 22 and 24 are secured by linkages 26 and 28 adjacent opposite ends of a member 30 pivotally secured at its center to bar 10 at a point opposite from the member 14. One extreme end of member 30 is also connected by linkage 32 to handle 40. Linkage 32 is spring loaded at 36.
Thus, it can be seen that the jaws 22 and 24 cooperate to open and close (see FIGS. 2 and 6) in response to movement of the handle 40 with jaw 24 pivoting upward and jaw 22 sliding downward. Articles such as paper and the like are gripped, advantageously aided with serrated ends on the jaws (see FIG. 5), and held firmly therebetween until the handle 40 is released, allowing the lower jaw to pivotally open about pivot point 50 and the upper jaw to slide upward.
While I have described my invention with particular reference to the drawings such is not to be considered as limiting its actual scope.
Having thus described this invenion what is asserted as new is:
1. A device for picking paper comprising:
(a) an elongated vertical bar;
(b) upper and lower vertically spaced jaws;
(c) said lower jaw adapted to pivot about a fixed axis to thereby pivot the outer edge of said jaw from a horizontal to an angular upward position;
(d) said upper jaw adapted for vertical sliding movement to and away from contact with the outer end of said lower jaw;
(e) a handle pivotally attached to said bar;
(f) a pivotal lever attached to said bar intermediate said handle and said jaws;
(g) a first spring-loaded rod linking said handle to one end of said lever;
(h) a second spring-loaded rod linking said upper jaw to the opposite end of said lever;
(i) a rod pivotally linking said lower jaw to said one end of said lever, whereby said handle closes said jaws by vertically lowering said upper jaw and pivotally rotating said lower jaw in coordinated action, and when released, said jaws resiliently return to their open position.
2. A device according to claim 1 wherein the outer ends of said jaws are serrated to increase the gripping effect of said jaws when closed.
3. A device as set forth in claim 2 further including an elongated element disposed vertically and slidably along said bar, said element having at its bottom end a downwardly extending prong disposed below the bottom end of said bar.
