UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM SOHILLING, or HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
HEAD-REST.
PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,801, dated November 2, 1886. Application filed January 28, 1386. Serial No. 190,008. (No modcLl To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM SCHILLINC, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Rests for Seats, of which the following is a description, whereby a person skilled inthe art can make and use the same.
My invention relates to the class of devices that are adapted for use on the backs of chairs and settees, but more particularly on car-seats; and its object is to provide such structures with a rest that is adjustable sidewise along the back, and also vertically.
My improvement consists in the combination of a chair or seat back having a longitudinal transverse groove, in which the body of the rest is supported and held against removal, with an adjustable standard bearing a rest, and in details of the combination and arrangement of the several parts, as more particularly hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a back view of a car-seat with parts cut away to show the construction of the back and my improved rest. Fig. 2 is a View in transverse section of the seat on plane denoted by line as x of Fig. 1.
In the drawings the same letters denote like parts throughout.
A The letter a denotes a seat, of ordinary material and form, with the side supports, I), having any convenient form of arm (I, to which is pivoted, by the bars 0, the reversible back f. This backf is provided groove, 9, extending nearly the whole length of the back and opening toward the top and bottom edges.
against removal from the grpove by means of a lug, h", on the side of thebody that lies in the groove f that is of equal length with the groove 9, andis formed inthe substance of the back upon one side of this groove 9. By means of this construction the rest It may be moved from one side of the seat to the other by simply pushing itwith the hand, so as to accom- Inodate a person at either end of the seat, the body part h sliding'freely in the groove 9, and the lug If moving in the groove f. The
with a longitudinal Within this groove is located the body part h of the rest /1, and it is held rest, with the end of the latch, j, projecting U outside of the slot, so as to be easy of access for the purpose of releasing thestandard to change its position vertically. On the top of this standard is a cross-bar, k, with its upper side curved and properly shaped to form a support for the head of a person.
Both the top and bottom edges of the back of a reversible seat are provided with these head-rests, and while the one on the upper edge of the seat forms a convenient support for the head, the back of the crossbar of the rest on the lower edge forms a convenient foot-rest for a person in the seat behind.
The advantages. of my invention consist in the fact that the rest is adjustable both lengthwise of the seat andvertically, in that the rest is permanently attached to the seat, and in that the rest servesa double function-as footrest as well as a head-rest I claim as my improvement 1. In combination, a seat-back having a groove or mortise, g, a rest supported by and longitudinally adjustable in the groove. and bearing avertically-adjustable sta11dard,t',and a spring clamp or latch, all substantially as described.
2. In combination, a seat-back, f,
having the mortise or groove the laterally-adj ustable rest 71, held in the groove 9 by the lug h",
proj ecti ng into the groovef, and the standard 1', borne in the body part 11., and having the crossbar or head-rest It, all substantially as described.
3. In combination, a seat-back,,f, having the mortise or groove g,the laterally-adj ustable rest It, held in the groove 9 by the lug h pro- 'jeoting into the groove f, the standard i, borne in the body part h, and having the cross-bar or head-restpk, and the spring latch or clamp 7', all substantially as described.
