REEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,593, dated October 26, 1886.
Application filed May 11, 1885. Serial No. 165,124. (No model.)
tron.
My invention relates to that class of reels which consist of a central block having detachable arms, the object of my invention being to so construct such a reel that the arms will, when inserted in the central block, have a binding or looking effect upon each other. This object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a windingreel constructed in accordance with my invention, part of each arm being broken away; Fig: 2, a side view, partly in section, of part of the reel, and Figs. 3 and 4, views illustrating modifications of the invention.
In Figs. 1 and 2, A represents a clamp, which is furnished with a binding-screw, a, so that it can be applied to the edge of a table or other structure, and secured thereon. This clamp carries a screw-pin, b, 011 which is free to turn a b1ock, B, said block, however, being confined to the clamp by the head of the pin, so as to have no movement other than the turning movement. The block B is of cruciform shape, and in the arms (Z (1 cl d of the block are formed openings for the reception of the inner portions of the rods D, forming the arms of the reel, these rods being bent at the outer ends for the reception of the hank of yarn.
The openings in the arms d (l of the block B are in a different horizontal plane from the openings in the armed" d of said block, the difference being such that when the rods D are passed through the openings the projecting end of each rod will overlap or underlap a portion of an adjacent rod, and the arms of the reel'will thus serve to bind or look themselves in position, thereby preventing accidental loosening or removal of either of the arms.
The use of a four armed or cruciform block is not absolutely necessary to the carrying out of my invention.
block may be used, the openings in the arms for the reception of the rods D in this case each rod will underlie the adjacent rod, as

being inclined, so that the projecting end of shown in Fig. 3; and instead of using a screwpin as a pivot for the block B, the latter may have a projecting pin adapted to an opening in the clamp, as shown in Fig. 4.
I am aware that it has been proposed to construct a reelin which the arms were retained between upper and lower plates, confined together and to the arms by means of .a thumb-nut on a central threaded stem passing through the plates, the overlapped ends of the arms being clamped between the upper and lower plates on tightening the thumb-nut.
I desire to make the pivot-block of the reel of a single casting, and hence I am compelled to resort to an essentially different method of securing the arms-that is to say, the block is formed with projecting arms carrying thearms of the reel, and the latter project beyond their carrying-arms, so as to form portions having sufficient spring or elasticity to permit them to yield slightly where they pass over portions of the other arms of the reel, the effect of this construction being tobind each arm of the reel firmly in its opening in the arm of the pivot-block.
I therefore claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the hubblo'ck of the reel, having projecting arms and constructed for being centrally pivoted, withthe arms D of the reel passing through and projecting beyond openings in the arms of the hub-block, said openings being in different planes, as described, whereby the project-ing end of each arm D will overlap or underlap and bear firmly upon a projecting portion of an adjacent arm D, said arms D being thereby locked in position, all substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the pivot-pin,a clamp forming a support therefor, the hub-block of the reel carried by said pin, and having proj ecting arms, and the arms D of the reel passing through and projecting beyond the openings in the hub-block, said openings being in different planes, as and for the purpose speci- In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
