SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,515, dated October 12, 1886.

I To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Bnnnznrrn WILLIAMS, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful I m provement in Underground Electric Conduits, of which the following is a full description, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I is a side elevation. Fig. 21s aplan. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4. is a section at Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal section showing the completed joint between two sections of pipe. Fig. 6 shows a device which I use while forming a joint for the purpose of preserving the continuity of the holes in the conduit.
Underground conduits for electric wires are made in sections from asphalt concrete, the joints being completed by the use of. such concrete. It often happens that the joints as now made are imperfect.
The leading objects of my invention are to make more perfect joints in the conduit, and at the same time secure the continuity of the passages through the conduit, which I accomplish as illustrated in the drawings, and hereinafter described.
That which I claim as new will be specified in the claims.
In the drawings, A B represent two sections of a square condnit,which are cutaway alittle at each end on the under side, to admit concrete between the pipe and its support, as shown at u, Fig. 5.

b are two pieces, oval or circular in form, one on each side of the pipe,l.ocated at a joint and resting on the support a, to which they are secured at their lower ends by means of screws or other fasteniugs which pass through,

F is a device to be inserted one in each of the holes in the pipe while thejoint is being formed. It is hollow and designed to be filled with water. As shown, this device F consists of several pieces, one of which is a tube, a, secured by a screw-thread to the piece 0, the outer end being closed by a pointed head, 19. Another tube, q, is secured to 0, and the outer end of q is closed by a cap, 0'.

In laying the conduit the two adjoining ends of two sections of pipe, A B, are to be placed on the block or support a, the ends of the pipe being a little distance apart. The parts being in place are held by the strap d. A device,F, is then to be inserted in each one of the holes in the conduit, so that the parts will be at the joint. Then hot asphalt concrete is to be poured into the opening between the two pieces of pipe, and into the chamber around the same and over the top of the joint. Such concrete will pass around the devices F. Before the hot concrete has become cool the two adjoining ends of the pipe can be brought some nearer together by means of the chains E. The strain upon the cranks j will press the blocks D against the sides of the pipe sufficiently to prevent them from slipping thereon. By thus bringing the two ends of the pipe a little nearer together and compressing the concrete at the j oint,the sanie (having been poured while hot) will unite with the ends of the pipe anda perfect joint will be formed, the pipe being in effect continuous and without joints. When sufficient pressure has been applied, the de vices F can be partially drawn out, bringing the part a to the joint where it can be allowed PATENT OFFICE. v
to remain for a few moments, and this part being filled with water the concrete will soon cool, when the devices F can be entirely withdrawn, leaving continuous passages. As shown in the drawings, there is a series of large holes for the main wires and one row of smaller holes. Coolers similar to the devices F can be inserted in the smaller holes while the joint is being formed.
I have only shown two sections of pipe, but a number of sections may be arranged ready to have the joints completed at the same time, and by providing a device, 0, at the end of the last section and by using one set of clamping devices with sufficiently long chains, two or more joints may be closed and completed at one operation, the parts F being suitably constructed or rods in place thereof.
In Fig. 2 I have shown one way of tightening the chains, and thus compressing the cement at thejoint,which is as follows: The shank a of the hook g is hollow at one end and screwthreaded on the inside. This shank enters a socket, 0. dis a screw-bolt, which enters the shank a, the bolt being provided with a head adapted to receive a wrench. By turning this bolt the chains may be tightened. I do not limit myself to this specific way of ti htening the chains and compressing the cement at the 30 joint.
An important feature of my invention consists in the method of cooling the hot cement at the joints and forming continuous passages by means of a tube or hollow rod containing or adapted to receive a cooling-fluid.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A clamping device adapted to be applied to one section of a conduit, in combination with a device adapted to engage with one end of another section of a conduit,and connecting-chains, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. A clamping device consisting of block D, combined with crank-rod 7', supported in bearings, and rods 7r, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The blocks D, crank-rod j, and rods It, in combination with a device, 0, adapted to engage with the end of a section of pipe,and connecting-chains, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
4-. The method herein described of cooling hot cement at the joints of electric conduits and iorming continuous passages at such joints by the use of a tube or hollow rod filled with or adapted to receive a cooling-fluid, substantially as specified.
5. The hollow device F, adapted tohe filled with water, one part being double, thus :l'ornr ing an air-space, i, substantial] y as and for the purpose specified.
