To all whom it may concern.-

, Be it .known that I, CHARLES A. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Linc'oln, in the,county of Grundy and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Draft Equalizers or Eveners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

' Figure 1 is a plan view of a draft-evener embodying my invention. Fig. 2 .is a detail elevation of the same.

My invention relates to draft equalizers or evenersv I The object of myimprovement is to provide an evener device adapted more particularly for use in drivin'gi'our or five horses abreast.

The invention consists in the following construction and arrangements, which will be first fully deseribed, and the points of noveltythen set forth in the claim.

1 and 2 are two bars arranged at an angle to each other and pivoted together at 3.

4 is a rock lever pivoted at 5 to the bar 2.

6 is a rigid rod pivoted to the short' arm of lever 4- in one of a series of holes, 8 8'. 7 isa rigid rod pivoted to the long arm of lever 4. The other end of rod 6 is pivoted at 15 to the bar-1, and the other end of rod 7 is pivoted at 22 to the whiflletree 10. 11 is a rigid rod pivote'd also at 22 at one end'and (at 21) at the other to bar 1. The lever 4 in this case is of triangular form.

When the draft-evener is arrhnged for five horses abreast, the rod 6is pivoted at the hole 8, as shown; but whenit is arranged for four horses the rod 6 is pivoted at 8 to compensate for changed arrangement of the draft. v The evener is pivoted to the carriage or wagon by the bolt 5.

, It will be seen that the whiffletree 10 is not pivoted to bar 1 directly, but is pivoted to the rods 7 and 11, the latter of which is pivoted tothe bar 1.

What I claim is- The combination, with a system .of equalizing-whiflietrees, of the front and rear levers, 1-

and 4, the rods 6 and 7, pivoted thereto, as described, and the rod 11, pivotedat its outer end to the rod 7 and whifiletree 10, and at its inner end to the lever 1 at a point intermediate of the forth.v
