R. W. SIMPSON.
ANTI-FRICTION THILL TIP.
Patented Sept. 28, 18 86.
N. PETERS, PholoLilhomyhcn Washingiun. a c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE,
ROBERT W. SIMPSON, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA. a
ANTI-FRICTION THlLL-TIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349, 17. dated September 1886- Application filed July 26, 1856. Serial No. 209,164. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. ROBERT W. SIMPSON, of the cityand county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented an Improvement in Anti-Friction Thill-Tips; and I hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to the class of thills or shafts for vehicles; and. it consists in the construction and combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
-Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figurerl is a perspective view of my tip or ferrule provided with its roller. Fig. 2 is a view showing the application of the tip or ferrule to the shafts or thills.
A is the tubular tip or ferrule, preferably of metal, and havingin its under surface, near its outer end, the roller B, which is mounted therein in any suitable manner and upon a journal or pivot which can be readily oiled and cleaned, if necessary. O in Fig. 2 are the shafts or thills of a vehicle, having applied to their ends the tips or ferrules A, which are secured thereto in suitable manner, as by pins, bolts, or rivets a;
The rear ends of the tips A are formed with circumferential grooves (1/, to provide for the attachment of the usual leather sheaths, c, as by winding wire around them, which presses into the grooves; or said grooves may simply provide sufficient frictional surface for the sheaths to hold them if the wire be dispensed with.
It will be seen that the shafts when not in 5 use rest on the rollers B, and there will therefore be no wear upon them which can sharpen them down.
' Having thus described myinvention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure/by Letters 40 Patent, is
1. The combination, with the shafts or thills L of a vehicle, having the leather sheaths c, of i the tubular tips or ferrules A, fitted to the ends of/the shafts and sheaths, and having the 5 antifriction rollers B, upon which the shafts rest when lowered, substantially as herein described.
2. In combination with the shafts or thills O of a vehicle and the leather sheaths c, the 5g tubular tips or ferrules A, having the antifriction rollers B, upon which the shafts rest when lowered, and the circumferential grooves a, for the attachment of the leather sheaths, substantially as described. 5 5 In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
ROBERT W. SIMPSON.
