DRESS-MAKERS CHART.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,198, dated September 14.1886. Application filed February 11, 1884. Renewed July 1, 1886. Serial No. 206,862. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be 1t known that l, ELVIRA BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mitchell,
in thecounty ofLawrence and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Dress-Makers Charts5and I do declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact descrlption of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters or gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The figure of the drawing is a representation of this invention.
The drawing shows a 'plan view of the inj venticn.
This invention has relation to combined pattern guides or charts and scalesfor dressmakers7 use; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices constituting the dress-makers chart and scale in one p1ece, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing, the letter A designates the combined chart and scale, which may be made of stout paper, stiffened cloth,or other suitable material. On one side is the longstraight margin B, and at the bottom a shorter straight edge, C, at right angles to the straight edge B. At the top adjoining the straight edge B is a short slightly-curved edge, D, forming the back-neck guide from which curved shoulder-guide edge E, extends obliquely to the long curved edge F, which is on the opposite side of the chart from the l straight edge B, and extends to the short straight edge C, as shown.
G indicates a long oblique curved slot having its margins meeting in apoint at the lower end. Its concave margin H is on the side of the long straight edge B, and its con- Vex margin I is on the side of the curved edge F. Near the upper end of this slot is a short curved slot, K, extending transversely and having its convex margin L on the lower side and its concave margin N on the upper side. a scale of inches and parts of inches. rIhis is a compound scale having a row of figures at the edge to serve as the front-neck scale, a, and a row of gures-back of the same to serve as the front-bust scale b. On the short Along the straight edge B is markedv straight edge C is marked the back-waist scale c. Along the long curved edge F is marked the front-waist scale d, and this edge forms at its upper part the back-arm guide e. A scale, f, is marked along the shoulderguide edge E. The concave edge N of the transverse curved slot K serves for the armscye guide, as at h, and for the front-neck guide, as atk. The front orcoucave edge of the long oblique slot is marked with a scale, g, and it serves as the side-body guide. The back or concave edge of this slot, also marked with a scale, Z, serves as the under-arm guide. These curved inner margins meet in a point at the lower end, and together serve as the dart-guide n, as shown.
Perforated scales are provided as follows: The front-shoulder scales p and e, extending, respectively, from the rear curved edge F upward and obliquely forward and from the bottom straight edge upward and slightly forward. From the upper part of the long curved edge F, inward and upward transversely extends the Scaler, by which the frontbust line is located. rIlhe back-shoulder scales s and t extend, respectively, from the rear end of the back-neck guide D, at the ntop downward and obliquely forward toward the frontstraight edge, B, and from the upper end of the back curved edge, F, transversely downward and inward toward the inner convex edge of the long slot. The transverse perforated scale o extends from the middle portion of the long curved edge F inward, as shown, and forms the back-bust scale.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A dress-makers chart and guide formed in one piece, and having the external straight edges B C, the upper curved edge, D, the oblique-curved edge E, the vertically-curved edge F, the upper'transversely-curved slotted portion K, and the vertically-slotted portieri G, having edge scale-marks, and the whole provided with scales for the various curved and straight edges, substantially as specified. In testimony whereof Iaix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ELVIRA BAKER.
