RINGS OF RING SPINNING 0R TWISTING MACHINES 5 Sheets-Sheet 5 Filed March 5, 1967 mweue'ys United States Patent US. Cl. 29207 3 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A tool for applying travellers individually from a magazine to a spinning frame ring comprises a base provided with a fixed handle, a lever pivoted on the base with one arm providing a relatively movable handle, a traveller applying member pivoted on another arm of the lever and slidably mounted on said base, and cooperating control means on the member and base including a cam groove on the base and a lateral projection on the member extending into the groove whereby when handles are moved toward each other the traveller applying member is caused to move in a predetermined path to locate a selected traveller in relation to the ring and then apply the traveller to the ring.
This invention relates to improvements in tools or devices for applying travellers individually to the rings of ring spinning and twisting frames.
According to the invention, the tool comprises a base plate, provided with a holding handle on which is pivotally mounted a two armed lever, one arm of which forms a second handle and the other arm carries or operates a member mounted so as to be slidable for first locating a traveller from a magazine carried by the tool on the ring, and then fixing the traveller onto the ring so that it is correctly positioned thereon.
The two handles are positioned relatively to one another so that they can be held in one hand of the operator and operated by squeezing them together, a spring being arranged between them which returns them to their normal positions on release of the squeezing pressure.
The invention will be more fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings which show two embodiments of the invention. In these drawings:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of the tool.
FIG. 2 is an exploded view of the tool showing the base plate with the two armed lever pivotally mounted thereon, the sliding member which applies a traveller onto the ring of the machine and the plate carrying the traveller magazine all separated from one another.
FIGS. 3, 4 and 5 are all side elevations drawn to a larger scale with the plate carrying the traveller magazine removed showing respectively the sliding member in its position before being operated, in the position for placing the traveller over the ring and in its final position after having fixed the traveller onto the ring.
FIG. 6 is a fragmentary exploded view showing a second embodiment of the invention similarly to FIG. 2.
FIGS. 7, 8 and 9 are side elevations of the second embodiment showing the sliding member in positions corresponding with those shown in FIGS. 3, 4 and 5.
The tool in both forms of the invention comprises a base plate A formed with or having secured thereto a holding handle B and having a two armed lever C pivotally mounted at c thereon. The arm c of the two armed lever C is formed as or has secured thereto a handle B and the other arm 0 of the lever C carries a pivot pin c on which is pivoted the rear end of a flat member D adapted to slide over the inner face of the base plate A. The two handles B and B lie in the same plane and can be gripped by the hand of the operator to squeeze them together so that the two armed lever C pivots about its pivot point 0 thereby moving the sliding member D to the left from its inoperative position shown in FIG. 3 or FIG. 7 towards its final positions shown in FIG. 5 or 9. The two handles B and B are separated by a spring b which returns them and consequently the sliding member D to the inoperative position when the grip on the two handles is released.
The traveller applying end d of the sliding member D is given a movement perpendicular to its forward movement whilst sliding over the base plate A and this movement is obtained by a laterally projecting pin d on the member which engages in a cam shaped groove or slot a of appropriate shape in the surface of the base plate A.
A second plate E covers the upper part of the base plate A being detachably secured thereto by a screw e which passes through a slot 2 in the plate E into a screw threaded hole a in the base plate. So that the plate E can be correctly located on the base plate A the top edge of e of the plate E is bent to form a channel (see FIGS. 2 and 6) which fits over the top edge of the base plate. When the plate E is secured over the front of the base plate it is spaced apart therefrom a suflicient distance to allow the member D to slide between them.
As will be seen from FIGS. 1, 2 and 6 an outwardly projecting bracket F is formed integrally with the plate E to carry the traveller magazine G, which carries a supply of travellers loaded thereon. The travellers before being loaded onto the magazine are held together by a cylindrical strip of suitable material and a fiat spring g to be mounted on the loading end of the magazine to hold such strip in position.
The forward end of the plate E is formed with a slot e and the forward end of the base plate A with a slot a to enable the tool to be located over the ring when applying a traveller thereto. The slot 2 in the plate E is enlarged at the rear to receive the end of the traveller magazine.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in FIGS. 1 to 5 the end of the sliding traveller applying member D which contacts the traveller supplied from the magazine has first a forward movement, then an upward and forward movement and finally a downward and forward movement (see FIGS. 3, 4 and 5) these movements being controlled by the lateral projection d on the member engaging in the shaped slot a in the base plate A, the slot being shaped to give such movements. The traveller which has been supplied from the magazine is thus first moved by the member D towards the ring, then located on the ring with its upper part over the top of the ring and its lower part finally under the bottom of the ring. To ensure that the front end of the member D controls the traveller it is preferably formed with a forwardly extending portion d having a recess into which the top of the traveller can fit and as the first part of the return movement of the member D after the traveller has been applied to the ring is, owing to the shape of the slot a, upwards the front of the member D will be raised clear of the traveller.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in FIGS. 7, 8 and 9 the end of the traveller applying sliding member D which contacts the traveller supplied from the magazine G, on its forward movement, selects and locates the traveller on the ring, is first moved forward and then forward and upward due to the shape of the slot a in the base plate A. Whilst the traveller is being located on the ring its top portion engages in inclined or sloping surface a in the body of the tool, which surface guides and retains the traveller on the ring ready for the final movement of the member D. The final movement of the member D finally positions the traveller on the ring.
What I claim is:
1. A tool for applying travellers individually from a magazine containing a plurality of travellers to a ring of a ring spinning and twisting frame comprising a base having one handle rigid therewith, a lever pivoted on said base with one arm providing a second handle movable toward and from said first handle and another arm extending adjacent said base, a traveller applying member pivoted on said other arm and slidable on said base, and cooperating control means on said member and said base including means defining a cam groove on said base and a lateral projection on said member extending into said cam groove whereby when said handles are moved toward each other said traveller applying member is caused to move in a predetermined path to locate a traveller from said magazine in relation to said ring and then apply said traveller to said ring.
2. The tool defined in claim 1, wherein said cam groove is formed with different directional portions for sequentially displacing said member to locate and apply said traveller.
3. The tool defined in claim 1, wherein said cam groove is formed to displace said member for locating said traveller, and a cam face is provided on said base adapted to be engaged by the traveller for moving the traveller onto said ring.
