MOP WASHING AND WRINGING MACHINE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,609, dated September 7, 1886.

Be it known that I, ERAs'rUs W. ALLEN, a citizen ofthe Uni tedStates, residing at Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Mop 'Vashing and \Vringing Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to improvements in mopfwringing machines, in which rollers are used to compress mops, cloths, Src., to extract the water and impurities therefrom; and the objects of my improvements are to produce for this purpose a simple, strong, and inexpensive device free from levers, cranks, and other similar mechanism. I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-4 Figure l is a perspective view of a mop washer and wringer constructed in accordance with my invention. In the drawings, A represents an ordinary wooden pail, to the interior of which are secured, adjacent to its edge, two segmental blocks, B, and in one end of said blocks is 3o journaled a roller, C, that, although permitted to revolve, has stationary bearings that can be oiled by removing the oil-cup plugs a. In theinner side of the blocksB are formed lon gitudinal grooves or slots b, to receive the journals of the sliding roller D. To operate this roller D, and either force it toward the roller O or bring it away therefrom, the blocks B have vertical slots I)2 extending more than half their length, and within said slots are placed the wedges E, made, preferably, with a vertical edge, c, at the'front to bear against the rear of the bearings f of the sliding roller D, and an inclined edge at the rear to bear against the beveled rear end of the slots b2. The wedges E are united at their upper edge by a horizontal connectingboard, E2, that has its middle portion reduced in width to form a handle, by which the wedges can be elevated until nearly out of the slots b2.

drawn out about halfway and the squeezing rollers well apart and ready to receive a mop; but in Fig. 8 the wedges are driven down to nearly the bottom of the pail by pressing on their connecting board or handle E2.

To permit the wedges to retract the sliding roller D away from the roller C, a dexible wire or cord, e2, is secured at its upper end to the Wedge-connecting board El, and after passing in front of the journals ofthe roller D has its lower end secured to the lower end of the wedges.

To prevent the lower end of the wedges from becoming lentangled with the mop, ver tical projecting boards G are placed under the inner edgeof the block B, and-extend down to the bottom of the pail, where they are secured by the small cleats g.

In using this Washer and wringer the rollers are separated by lifting the wedges a suitable distance by means of the handle El, inserting the mop or other cloth between the rollers, pressing the wedges down by the operators foot, and drawing on the mop. If the operation is repeated two or three times in succession, the mop will at last issue nearly as clean and dry as when new.

Having now fully described my invention and its operation, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination of a pail, and secured thereto the blocks B, having slots I) and b2, with the rollers C and D, and the wedges E, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. The combination of a pail, the blocks B, secured thereto and having vertical slots b, with wedges passing through said slots, and the wedges protecting boards G, substantially as and for the purpose described.

3. The combination ofa pail, the blocks B, having slots b and b2, the rollers C and D, and the bearingsf` for the latter, with wedges E, their connecting-handle E2, and cords e?, substantially as and for the purpose described.
