J. K. RIOKBY.
SURGEONS OPERATING TABLE.
Patented Aug. 31, 1886.
EEIcE PATENT JOSEPH K. RIOKEY, OF OLARINDA, IOWA.
SURGEONS OPERATING-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,418, dated August 31, 1886.
Application filed March 2, 1886.
To aZZ whom it, may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH K. RIcKEY, of Olarinda, in the county of Clarinda and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Surgical Tables, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a surgical table upon which the patient may lie easily, and on which his body may be easily adjusted and properly supported; and to this purpose my invention consists in certain details of construction and arrangement,as here inafter described and claimed.
In order that my invention may be fully understood,I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is aside elevation of my improved operating-table. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same.
In the said drawings,a b designate two sections, forming the top of the table when broken down, said sections being hinged together and supported upon an ordinary rectangular supporting-frame,as shown. To the outer end of the section b is hinged a leaf, 0, which is provided on its under side with a ratchet-bar, c, which ratchet is engaged by an arm,c ,hinged to the end of the supporting-frame. A ratchetbar, f, is similarly secured to the under side of the section a, and is held by an arm, 0, pivoted to a crossbar, m,in the supporting-frame of the table. Thus it will be seen that by a very simple construction thetable is provided with two sections, each of which is easily adjustable, and which serve to properly support the patients body during a surgical operation. The leaf 0 is provided at its outer edge with two or more parallel slots, f, extending longitudinally of the table, and in these slots work a corresponding number of studs, 9, each of Serial No. 193,901. (No model) which is reduced at g to properly work in the slots, and which are connected by a foot-board, h. This foot-board is provided with one or more pins,i,which pass vertically through the board, and the lower ends of which enter holes or notchesin the leaf 0, so as to secure the foot board in its various required positions of adjustment. A leaf, j, is hinged at one side of the table, and when raised serves to support the surgeons instruments and other appliances to be used forthe patient. This leaf is supported by a sliding bar, K, to give said leaf great stability, the said slide working inwardly outward of the supporting frame and transversely thereof. Thus I have produced a table which meets all of the requirements of operative surgery, and one which is of the utmost simplicity, and which is capable of ready attachment to any ordinary supportiug-frame for a table.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to make a surgcons operating-table with leaves adjustable to any desirable angle to change the patients position; but,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a surgeons operating-table, the rectangular supporting-frame andstationary section a, in combination with the folding section I), hinged thereto, and having rack-bar f, the folding section 0, hinged also to section a,and having rack-bar c, and adjustable foot-rest h, the arms 0 c", for said folding sections, theleaf j, hinged to one side of section a,and the slide k, for sustaining said leaf, substantially as described.
Olarinda, Iowa, February 22, 1886.
JOSEPH K. RICKEY.
