` J. B. BOWMAN.
IRONING TABLE.
Patented Aug. 10, 1886.
Aww
I UNITED STATES PATENT Ormea JOHN E. BOWMAN, OF BOONSBOEOUGH, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- I-IALII` TO ANDREW M. V. B.' DEANER, OF SAME PLACE.
IRONING-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part ofLetters Patent No. 347,287, dated August 10, 1886.
` l Application tiled April 12, 1886. Serial No. 198,522. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. BOWMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boonsborough, in thecounty of Vashington and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Tables; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same,.
of the table consists of the sides A, which at.
oneI end have connected to them braces a b, and at the opposite end a'brace, c.' These braces iirmly hold the sides ot' the frame together the required'distance apart to admit the ironingboard B being-brought down in a horizontal position for use between the sides A of the frame, as shown. y
As a further means for bracing the sides A, I employ rods d, which extend transversely between the sides of the frame and through them, and in order to hold the board B in a horizontal position transverse vsupports e fg are provided, which are connected to the interior sides of the frame, or to shoulders h, formed thereon. Metal strengthening-straps C are secured to the sides A,Inear one end of the frame, and overlap the upper and lower edges thereof. The straps C not only serve as a means of strengthening the frame of the ironing-table, but also form bearings for headed pivots i, which are rigidly connected to the board B and pass through holes in the sides A. These pivots move with the board when it is raised or lowered, and the metal straps, with which the heads of the pivots comein contact, takeoff any frictional wear from the sides of the frame; also prevent wear of the pivot-holes in the sides of the frame, as well as preventing it from splitting. The sides A ofthe frame are cut away, as shown at D, to enable the board" to be convenientlyv grasped by the hand in raising or lowering it; also to form a rack, to hang thereon small articles of fabric within convenient reach of the person ironingkto be taken therefrom and placed on the board. The legs E are connected together bythe rounds k Z in the ordinary 'manner, the upper ones, k, of the rounds formingthe pivots by which the legs are connected to the sides A' of the frame. The legs E, between the rounds k l, have connected to them transverse braces m, and to these braces are secured pins n, adapted to engage with perforations o in spring latch-plates F, fastened to the under side of the braces l c. These spring latch-plates F at their free or inner ends are curved upwardly, as shown. Thus when the legs D are being extended or brought down into position for use the brace m, as it strikes the curved end of the latchplate, will press it up, and when the pin n gets in line with the perforation-o the latch- -plate will fly back to its normal position and engage itself with the pin, the upper ends of the legs striking against the rods d, which act as stops, as do also the braces b c, to prevent, the legs from swinging back too far. The board B may have a suitable cleat, p, secured to its under side, and at its outer end has a re-enforce, G, to prevent the end from warping, and to this re-enforce is pivoted a button, H,'which engages with the brace e, to hold the board stationary to the frame. An iron-holder, I, may be connected to the upper side of the brace a, for supporting the iron off the woodwork of the table.
Having now fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- In an ironing-table, a suitable frame provided with an ironing-board pivoted thereto, in combination with legs pivoted to the sides of the frame, transverse braces secured to the legs, and having latch-pins secured thereto, and spring latch-plates secured to the transverse braces -of the frame and formed with perforations, and upwardly-curved ends to act with the braces and pins of the legs, snbstantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the prese-nce of two witnesses.
Witnesses: l JOHN E. BOVMAN.
J Aeon L. WHITTER, CHARLES W. SMITH.
