'Cl. 77-5 7 Claims This invention relates in general to mechanically operated punches, and in particular to a new and usefuloperating mechanism for a hand-operated paper punch and to a punch having dust removal means.
The present invention is particularly applicable for forming holes in a stack comprising a large number of sheets of paper in which penetration of such a large number of paper is somewhat difiicult. Hand-operated punches are known for accomplishing this task which include a pivotal lever mechanism which have a disadvantage inasmuch as the paper becomes misaligned before the punching is completed or in some instances the punch body is apt to spring up during the punching operation before the whole stack of paper is cut out. A further disadvantage in the known mechanism is that the lever member which is used for pivoting the punch body is subjected to excessive forces during operation which affect the fulcrum axis so that misalignment of the punch member will be apt to occur within a short period of use. A further disadvantage in the known punches is that means must be provided for removal of the material or dust which is cut away from the paper or such dust will accumulate within the area of the punch so as to make the area unsightly or even to make the punch difficult to use.
In accordance with the invention there is provided an improved punch which includes a body which is mounted on an upright member for vertical displacement and which is biased upwardly by suitable spring means. The body carrying the punch is moved downwardly to cause the punch to cut out the holes in a stack of paper under the influence or a lever member which is pivotally mounted on the upstanding member adjacent its upper end. A feature of the construction is that the lever member is connected to the punch body which slides on the upstanding member through an arm which is pivoted at the top of the body adjacent the end nearest the column upon which it is supported. The arm is carried by the hand-operated lever in a manner such that the arm may advance along the lever during the operation of the body. The construction is such that when the lever is operated there is little or no tendency for the body to spring upwardly under the action of the restoring spring. In addition, the holding member maintains the operating lever in close contact with the pivotal bolt or fulcrum of the body of the drill punch so that the tendency toward overloading the fulcrum for the lever member is materially reduced.
In accordance with another feature of the invention, the punch is advantageously made so that the punch element which will penetrate the paper is carried at the lower end of a rotating shaft. The drill punch member is advantageously secured such as by a clutch to the lower end of a motor shaft which is carried at the punch body. The upper end of the motor shaft is advantageously directed into a housing and the shaft is constructed such that the dust which is cut away by the action of the punch will be drawn upwardly by a suction or fan effect produced by the shaft or an associated fan and deposited within the housing above the body.
Accordingly, it is an object of the invention to provide a drill punch having an improved hand-operatetd lever mechanism in which there is a connecting arm to the main 3,472,101 Patented Oct. 14, 1969 pivotal lever which maintains the lever adjacent the pivotal bearing for the connecting arm on the body of the punch.
A further object of the invention is to provide a drill punch having a simple operating mechanism and which includes means for withdrawing the punched-out material from the articles which are placed therebeneath.
A further object of the invention is to provide a punch which includes a rotatable hollow shaft carrying a punch member at its lower end which is adapted to penetrate articles such as paper for cutting out holes therein and wherein the shaft includes means for causing a negative or suction pressure therein for withdrawing the cut-away material.
A further object of the invention is to provide a punch which is simple in design, rugged in construction and economical to manufacture.
The various features of novelty which characterize the invention are pointed out with particularly in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this specification. For a better understanding of the invention, its operating advantages and specific objects attained by its use, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings and descriptive matter in which there is illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of the invention.

Referring to the drawings in particular, the invention as embodied therein comprises a punch drill for the rotary punching and drilling of holes in paper which includes a base member 13 which carries a supporting tray 18 thereon which may be adjustably positioned forwardly, rearwardly and sidewardly. The tray 18 is designed to support a stack of paper 20 which is placed on the tray 18 and held downwardly thereon by an adjustable holder bar 22 which is pivotally mounted in brackets 24 and 26.
An upstanding drill support or column member 7 is bolted to the base 13 by means of bolts 28. The drill punch includes a blockshaped body or casing generally designated 1 having a bearing portion or receiving shaft 101 which embraces the upright column member 7 and is slidably displaceable thereon in vertical directions. A compression spring 14 is engaged around the column 7 and bears at its lower end on the base 13 and urges the body member 1 upwardly to the top of the column 7. A lever supporting bolt or fulcrum member 8 is rotatably carried at the upper end of the column 7 and a U-shaped operating lever 9 has leg portions 9a and 9b which are respectively secured to the respective oppoiste ends of the bolt member 8. A set screw 30 is provided at the upper end of the column which bears against the bolt member 8 and provides a frictional retarding force thereon to inhibit the turning thereof in accordance with the desired operation of the operating lever or handle 9.
In accordance with the invention, the body 1 carries upstanding journal members or brackets 32' at FIG. 7 each side which carry supporting shaft elements or pintles 11 which rotatably support a holding member or connecting arm 10 which, in accordance with the invention, includes an inturned edge 1011 which engages over a respective leg portion 9a or 9b of the U-shaped handle 9. The handle 9 may be moved from the solid line to the dotted line positions indicated in FIGS. 1, 4 and 5, and as this movement is carried out, the holding arm will be shifted along the arm to maintain the handle 9 in engagement over the pintle 11 so that it will not be displaced outwardly from the associated body 1. This permits the handle 9 to be operated to lower the body 1 without any danger that the body will inadvertently move upwardly by the action of the spring 14.
In accordance with another feature of the invention, the body 1 encloses a motor 32 (FIGS. 3 and 4) which has a hollow shaft 3 which is rotated when the motor is switched on through a switch 34. The shaft 3 is hollow to provide passage with means to accommodate an upward flow or movement of the punched-out paper pieces through the shaft in the direction of the arrows indicated into a casing 17 connected to the upper end of the body by means of bolts 34. During the upward and downward movement of the punch, the pieces of paper of the general outline of the bore of the hollow shaft 3 are cut away and are urged upwardly and discharged into the casing 17 by successive cut pieces as the punch is operated. The casing 17 is provided with a vent opening 16 at its top. A rotary combination drill and punch member 6 is secured to the shaft 3 such as by a securing chuck or clutch member 36 which, in the embodiment indicated, comprises a securing nut which is engaged over the end of the shaft and the end of the drill punch 6 by means of a threaded engagement.
When the motor 32 is switched on and the operating lever 9 is operated to cause the drill punch 6 to be moved downwardly into the paper 20, the material which is cut out of the paper is sucked up through the hollow rotary drill punch 6 and the hollow shaft 3 and is discharged at the upper end of the shaft 3 into interior of the casings 17. In this manner, during the operation of the punch the material which is cut away from the paper is always continuously removed.
While a specific embodiment of the invention has been shown and described in detail to illustrate the application of the inventive principles, it will be understood that the invention may be embodied otherwise without departing from such principles.
What is claimed is:
1. A punch press comprising an upright column memher, a body slidably carried on said column member for vertical displacement, spring means urging said body upwardly, an actuating handle lever pivotally mounted adjacent the upper end of said column at its one end and having its opposite end extending outwardly for engagement by an operators hand, and a holding member pivotally connected to the upper end of said body and connected to said handle lever to hold said handle lever over said pivotal connection to said body, said holding arm being displaceable along said handle lever when said lever is moved downwardly to hold said body downwardly against the force of said spring, and a punch carried by said body and projecting downwardly therefrom to engage an object to be punched when said body is moved downwardly by said handle lever.
2. A punch according to claim 1, wherein said handle lever is substantially U-shaped and includes a leg portion on each side which is pivotally mounted to said column member, and a holding arm pivotally connected to each side of said body and to respective arms of said handle lever.
3. A punch according to claim 2, wherein said holding arm includes a portion extending upwardly alongside said handle lever and a portion extending over said handle lever and holding said handle lever downwardly on said pivotal connection to said body.
4. A punch, according to claim 1, wherein said punch comprises a hollow elongated tubular member, an electric motor surrounding said tubular member and having an armature connected thereto for rotating said tubular memher.
5. A punch, according to claim 4, including a casing formed on said body and surrounding said upper end of said tubular member and communicating with the interior of said tubular member and defining means for holding the material which has been cut away by said punch.
6. A punch, according to claim 1, including a motor mounted in said body having a hollow shaft extending upwardly through said body, said punch being hollow and being connected to the lower end of said hollow shaft, said motor being actuable to rotate said shaft.
7. A punch according to claim 6, including a casing formed at the top of said body, said hollow shaft being arranged with its upper end extending into said casing for discharging dust material into said casing.

1. A PUNCH PRESS COMPRISING AN UPRIGHT COLUMN MEMBER, A BODY SLIDABLY CARRIED ON SAID COLUMN MEMBER FOR VERTICAL DISPLACEMENT, SPRING MEANS URGING SAID BODY UPWARDLY, AN ACTUATING HANDLE LEVER PIVOTALLY MOUNTED ADJACENT THE UPPER END OF SAID COLUMN AT ITS ONE END AND HAVING ITS OPPOSITE END EXTENDING OUTWARDLY FOR ENGAGEMENT BY AN OPERATOR''S HAND, AND A HOLDING MEMBER PIVOTALLY CONNECTED TO THE UPPER END OF SAID BODY AND CONNECTED TO SAID HANDLE LEVER TO HOLD SAID HANDLE LEVER OVER SAID PIVOTAL CONNECTION TO SAID BODY, SAID HOLDING ARM BEING DISPLACEABLE ALONG SAID HANDLE LEVER WHEN SAID LEVER IS MOVED DOWNWARDLY TO HOLD SAID BODY DOWNWARDLY AGAINST THE FORCE OF SAID SPRING, AND A PUNCH CARRIED BY SAID BODY AND PROJECTING DOWNWARDLY THEREFROM TO ENGAGE AN OBJECT TO BE PUNCHED WHEN SAID BODY IS MOVED DOWNWARDLY BY SAID HANDLE LEVER.
