Description
EPA
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS B. FRANKLIN, OF APPLETON, VYISOONSIN.
IMYPROVED SPRING BED-BOTTOMS.
To 1f/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANcIs B. FRANKLIN, of the city of Appleton, Outagamie county,
` and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Bed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan illustrating my improved bed-bottom. Fig. 2 is avertical longitudinal section of the same. l
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
The subject of my invention is a spring bed-bottom formed otl wire, and the invention particularly consists in animproved combination of spring-coils, as hereinafter eX- plained.
To enable others skilled in the art to make' and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A A B B are the side and end rails of the frame, which may be of wood or metal. The rail B may be attached to the rails A A in any suitable manner. The rail B is formed at its ends with tenons working in mortises in the ends of the rails A, so as to tighten the web by means of wedges C or their equivalents.
The web is formed as follows: D D D are wire staples passing through the end rails and formed with hooks or eyes E, projecting on the inside. F F are a series of horizontal spiral coils, the shanks of which, projecting forward, are formed into'loops G, and then bent so as to extend horizontally backward beneath and on each side of the coils F in the form of straight rods H, the ends of which are formed with eyes h', by which they are secured to the eyes E of the rail B. F F are a second series of horizontal coils formed with loops G', and straight horizontal ends H, similar in every respect to the springs F G H. The springs F G H are interposed between and made to connect the springs F vG H by their eyes h taking into the bows of the latter. F2 are a third series of springs of similar construction connected with and between springs F G H; F3, a fourth series connected with and between the springs F2,
and so on, the entire web being in this manner made up of connected springs. The bows of the front series of springs pass through the eyes E of the rail B, as clearly shown in the drawings.
I am aware that a patent was granted to W. C. Cook on the 21st of May, 1861, for a bed-bottom the web of which is made up of a series of chains of loops forming an elastic surface. The superiority of my invention over the above consists, first, in constructing each loop in the form of a spiral coil and providing an additional loop in each of its ends, by which means a Inore delicate and eX- tended elasticityis afforded by wires of greater strength, and, secondly, in so arranging the spring that they may be connected together throughout, forming a continuons web, instead of a series of disconnected chains; but,
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-` The combination of the coils F F, loops G G', rods H H', and eyes E, all constructed, arranged, and connected in the manner herein shown and explained, so as to constitute a continuous elastic web.
The above specification of my improvement in spring bed-bottoms, signed this 10th day of December, 1861.
FRANCIS B. FRANKLIN. Witnesses:
EDWARD R. FRANKLIN, PATIENCE S. FRANKLIN.
