July 22, 1969 0. K. BUCHHEIT' ENTRY ROLLWAY FOR RAKE COOLING BEDS Filed Oct. 18, 1967 US. Cl. 198-219 4 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLGSURE An entry rollway for rake-type cooling beds to selectively feed a right-hand and a left-hand cooling bed section from an intermediate rollway disposed between the two cooling bed sections comprising means for selectively raising brake slides receiving the rolled material to two different levels, the retarded rods being lifted at a first level toward one Cooling bed section and at a second level the rolled material is directed by flap-like members projecting from the inclined retarding plates of the brake slides on the retarding plates toward the other cooling bed section, where the rolled material is lifted out by the oscillating rake of the other higher-positioned cooling bed section.
The invention relates to an entry rollway for cooling beds provided with reciprocating feeders or rakes said rollway including retarding members adapted to be raised and lowered and comprising retarding plates inclined towards the cooling bed.
The invention is directed to further developing such an entry rollway as an intermediate rollway for a doublesided cooling bed from which both the right-hand and also the left-hand cooling bed sections can be supplied selectively and by which the sections of the cooling bed provided with reversible reciprocating rakes can be connected one to the other in either cross feed direction. In order to distribute rolled rods from the centre on to two cooling bed sections it was previously necessary to provide two receiving rollways beside one another which could be operated alternatively. By using the features of the present invention a complete receiving rollway is thus saved which means a substantial saving in cost in view of the fact that the proportion of the cost of a receiving rollway is 30% of the cost of the cooling bed.
Further functional advantages of a single entry or receiving rollway as an intermediate rollway for two cooling bed sections which is defined by the features specified hereinafter will be seen from the following description r of a preferred embodiment, in conjunction with the drawings. It will be noted that hereinafter the references to cooling bed sections should not necessarily be understood as meaning precisely one half of the total of the cooling bed surface.
As shown in the accompanying drawing:
FIGURE 1 is a cross-section through the intermediate entry rollway with a portion of the lateral adjacent cooling bed sections, and
FIGURE 2 is a partial longitudinal section through the entry rollway showing the lifting and lowering drive for the retarding members and a drive derived therefrom for flap-like members movable relatively to the retarding members.
In the entry rollway shown the rollway rolls 1 are inclined in known way towards the cooling bed A and are provided with retarding members 2 having inclined retarding plates 2a and are angled upwardly at their lower side edge to form a slider channel 3. For raising and lowering the retarding members a pull rod 4 is provided which acts on angle levers 5 to which the retarding members are pivoted at 6 (see FIGURE 2).
Patented July 22, 196% The cooling bed A has a stationary channelled bed Ill as well as reciprocating rakes 12 which enter lateral slots 2!; in the retarding members in order to lift rolled rods, profiles or other products from the slider channel 3 when the retarding members are lifted from the lowermost position I to an intermediate position II in which the rolled rods 14 lifted from the rollway can be transferred by the rakes 12 at 14 into the first tooth of the stationary channelled bed 10. If the rakes 12 of the cooling bed A are reversible the rolled rods can also be transferred from the cooling bed A into the slider channel 3 when the retarding members 2 are raised to the intermediate position.
The retarding members 2 can be lifted through the intermediate position II up to the highest position III shown in full lines, whereby rolled rods 14 lying in the slider channel 3 can be moved crosswise from a catch face opposite to the channel 3 on to the other cooling bed section B. The rolled rods 14" transferred to this catch face 16 are lifted into the first tooth of the stationary channelled bed 20 of the left-hand cooling bed section B by reciprocating rakes 18 of the left-hand cooling bed section B which can also pass through slots in the side walls of the retarding member 2, whereby they reach the position 14. Obviously the rods can be transferred conversely from the cooling bed section B to the entry rollway if the rakes 18 are reversible.
In order that the rolled rods 14 coming to rest in the slider channel 3 can be brought uphill to the catch face 16 facing the cooling bed section B flap-like members 22 are supported in the retarding members 2 which are movable up-and-down relatively to the latter, as further explained with reference to FIGURE 2, the members 22 extending over the width of the retarding plates 2a. In the intermediate position II of the retarding members they lie beneath the upper surface of the retarding plates and are operated to execute an upward movement only when the retarding members 2 execute a movement past the intermediate position II. As will be seen best from FIGURE 1 the flap-like members 22 have an inclined sliding or rolling edge 22a inclined towards the cooling bed section B which engages rods 14 coming to rest in the slider channel 3 in the course of the upward movement of the retarding member to its uppermost position III and urges them progressively to the left against the catch face 16 Which is likewise formed on the members 22.
Various constructions of the flap-like members 22 may be adopted. They could be pivoted flaps forming parts of the retarding plate 2a as are provided in earlier constructions of exit rollways in place of retarding and lifting members. They could also be formed by vertically movable rails which project through slots in the retarding plates 2a. Also they could have their own drive controlled independently of the retarding members 2 whereby the cooling bed sections A and B lie at about the same level in contrast to FIGURE 1.
In the constructional example shown the flap-like members 22 form segments of a cylinder which are rotatably supported at 24 by means of radial levers 26 and are driven at an increased rate from the lifting mechanism of the retarding member 2, whereby they still remain beneath the upper surface of the retarding plates from the lowermost position I of the retarding member 2 up to the intermediate position II thereof. With the drive for the flap-like segments 22 derived from the lifting mechanism 4 to 6 for the retarding member 2 there must thus be a form of idle movement during the displacement from I to II.
The advancing drive for the flap-like segments 22 is effected according to the invention by at least one coupling member 20 which is linked to a lever arm of length a of an angle lever 5 which is longer than that for the retarding member 2 which as already cited is connected at 6 to a smaller lever arm section b on the angle lever 5.
Since for an angular displacement of the angle lever 5 the pivot 36 executes a greater movement than the pivot 6, the flap-like segments 22 move upwardly at a greater speed than the retarding members 2.
They thus execute a relative movement to the retarding members. As will be seen from FIGURE 2 only one segment 22 or at least only one segment of a group need be driven by a coupling member 28 if this drive is imparted to the other segments 22 by a horizontal coupling member 32. In FIGURE 2 all the segments 22 are moreover in the position in which they just intersect the upper surface of the retarding plates 2a. This corresponds to the intermediate position II of the retarding members 2 since only for the additional movement commencing from position 11 onwards, should the segments 22 project from the retarding plates 2a as is indicated in chain dot lines in FIGURE 2.
In the lowermost position I the uppermost parts of the slide surfaces 22a of the segments lie beneath the retarding plates 20.
The additional movement of the retarding member 2 from II to III which depends on the derived drive of flap-like members 22 is related to the fact that the cooling bed section B lies higher than the cooling bed section A at least in the region of the receiving rollway.
It should also be stated that the rollway rolls 1 are driven through jointed spindles 34 since the direct attachment of rollway motors would involve difficulties owing to the arrangement of the cooling bed on both sides.
The method of operation of the single receiving rollway according to the invention for different application purposes is as follows:
The normal case is that a rolling line lies in line with the entry rollway and the rods are to be distributed alternately on to the cooling bed sections A and B. If the B. If the first rod is to pass on to the cooling bed A the retarding members 2 are raised for lifting each rod first to the intermediate position II and the rods come to rest in this position. Then a rod is picked up by the rakes 12 of the cooling bed A. The next rod which also comes to rest in the intermediate position II of the retarding members 2 is transferred against the catch face 16 by lifting the retarding member to the position III and comes by reason of the segments 22, from which the rakes 18 of the cooling bed section B lifts the rod, to the position 14. The additional movement of the retarding member from position II to position 111 which in the constructional example is required for a constant but not too rapid lifting of the flap-like member 22, determines the height difference between the cooling bed sections A and B, which can obviously be balanced by the outer takeoff rollways.
In the case concerned where the rolling line of the rolling frames lies in line with the entry rollway trueing machines are normally placed beyond the exit rollways at the lateral edges of the cooling bed sections. If one of these trueing machines is cut of use it is possible with the arrangement of the entry rollways according to the invention that roll products located on one cooling bed section should be moved over the entry rollway on to the other cooling bed section and thus fed to the still intact trueing machine. If for example roll products are to be brought from the cooling bed section B on to the cooling bed section A the retarding members 2 are brought to the uppermost position III in which the segments 22 form the catch face 16 by means of the slide surface edge 22a thereof. Since the movement of the rakes 18 is reversed the rolled rods are lifted from the position 14' to the position 14 Then the retarding members 2 are lowered to the intermediate position 11 whereby the segments 22 are retracted into the retarding plates 2a and the rod can roll or slide to the right to the channel 3. From here it is collected by the rakes 12 of the cooling bed section A and moved to the position 14'. Transfer from the cooling bed section A via the receiving rollway to the cooling bed section B operates in the reverse Way.
It will be understood that certain features and subcombinations are of utility and may be employed without reference to other features and subcombinations. This is contemplated by and is within the scope of the claims. It is further obvious that various changes may be made in details within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention. It is therefore to be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the specific details shown and described.
What is claimed is:
1. Apparatus for handling rolled material comprising first and second rake cooling bed sections, an entry rollway between the cooling bed sections including retarding members having a catch face and inclined plates angled upwardly at their lower side to form a slider channel, means for vertically moving said retarding members to an intermediate position in which reciprocating rakes of the first cooling bed section are able to lift material from the slider channel or to deposit in the slider channel material coming from the first cooling bed section, flap-like members supported on the retarding members and movable up and down relative thereto and extending over the width of the inclined plates, said flap-like members executing an upward movement as the retarding members move upwardly beyond the intermediate position thereby providing a sliding or rolling surface inclined toward the second rake cooling bed section for positioning material in the slider channel against the catch face of the retarding members in the uppermost position of the retarding members, from which catch face the reciprocating rakes of the second cooling bed section disposed at a higher level receive the material or against which catch face the material is received from the second cooling bed section.
2. Entry rollway according to claim 1, characterized in that the flap-like members are adapted to be raised through slots in the retarding plates.
3. Entry rollway according to claim 2, characterized in that the flap-like members are segments of a cylinder which are rotated in the axis of the cylinder by means of a radial lever and are driven at an increased rate from the lifting mechanism of the retarding member as compared with the retarding members whereby from the lowermost position of the retarding member up to the intermediate position thereof they still remain beneath the upper surface of the retarding plates.
4. Entry rollway according to claim 3, with a lifting drive for the retarding members by means of an angle lever moved by a pull rod, characterized in that the flap like segments are driven by at least one coupling member which is linked to an angle lever at a greater leverage than the retarding member.
