G09f 11/00 U.S. C1. 40--104.02 9 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The inventiom Display devices with movable panels, particularly in book binding used to support pages for selective exposure through the front and/ or back cover of the book.
Description of the prior art Numerous earlier inventors have attempted to devise display devices for exposing a selected one of plurality of pictures, calendar pages or the like through a display frame. However, none have approached the articulated hinge concept. Most of these inventors have addressed themselves to the task of supporting the non-selected pictures or pages out of the way of the selected picture, for example behind the selected picture or behind the face of the binding. In this respect note Kranhold (2,194,023), Hawkins (2,228,517), Woofter (2,877,581), Shedd (1,810,440), Spinner (2,224,414), Esslinger (2,831,279) and Nichols (2,960,783) are typical of calendars with removable panels and a plurality of pockets or pads for memoranda. Spinner (2,224,414) is an early example of the use of a plastic ring binder.
Dickerson (2,128,989) and Swiss 303,679, perhaps, most nearly approach the present concept wherein a plurality of calendar or date pages are shown through a frame. Neither, however, contemplate thearticulated r displaceable hinge concept. France 848,522 pivots the faces A, B and C with respect to each other so as to vary a picture presented in combination with a calendar, but does not suggest the displaceable hinge concept.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION According to the present invention a book binding in its folded or closed position presents a page or panel for display through an aperture in the front and/or back cover. As the front cover is opened or pivoted with respect to the back cover, the page support is then pivotable to a position of displacement from the cover for turning of the pages independently of the front and back. The page support may then be pivoted to the horizontal plane of the book back and the book closed by folding over the cover, so as to expose a new page through the front and/ or back cover aperture. As a result, the pages or displays exposed to the apertures may be varied at will. Modifications of invention consist in the structure used for articulating or displacing the page support with respect to the book back and front.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 2 is a like perspective view, showing the front cover folded open, so as to expose the page support 14 in horizontal position;

In FIG. 1 book 10 is in closed position generally designated as comprising cover 12, having a frame 18 defining aperture 20. Cover 12 is hingedly connected to binding base 22 and back 16 is also hingedly connected to binding base 22. The individual pages 28 are exposable through cover aperture 20.
In FIG. 2 book 10 is shown in open position with cover 12 pivoted with respect to binding base 22 so as to lie in the same horizontal plane as back 16. A page supporting portion 14 is pivoted at its bottom to the free edge of book back 16.
In FIG. 3 the page supporting portion 14, having a page aperture 24, is shown pivoted to its vertical position and supporting ring binder 32 by means of transfer support rod 26. The individual pages 28, 30 may be thus turned for selective exposure through front cover aperture 20 or rear cover aperture 80. Various other means than a ring binder may be used to attach the pages to rod 26.
In FIGS. 2 and 3 the ring binder 32 is accommodated within binding base recess 42 at one end and within front cover recess 44 and back cover recess 46 at its top and bottom.
Book covers 12 and 16, as illustrated in FIG. 5, may include ledge portions 34 and 38 within which transparencies may be mounted so as to protect the pages being exposed. In FIG. 7 page support 14 is shown in the FIG. 3 position pivoted vertically with respect to front cover 12 and back 16. Of course, the book may be read conventionally by opening the front with respect to the back, as in FIG. 2, and turning pages 28 conventionally.
Modifications of invention for exposing a different page through the front and/0r rear aperture are shown in FIGS. 812. In the FIGS. 8 land 9 modification the page support rod 26' and ring binder 32' are displaced with respect to the front 12' and back 14' by a pair of identical hinges 48, including complementary top straps 50 and bottom straps 52 pivoted about pins 54. Pairs of complementary brackets 57 including arcuate slots 58 engage bottom strap stud 56, as well as the rod ends 26, as illustrated in FIG. 9. The individual upper straps 50 and lower straps 52 are foldable within recesses 62 and 64.
In the FIG. 10 modification the page supporting rod 26' is pivoted at one side by means of ball 68 rotatable within ears 70 by means of pin 72. When rod 26' is pivoted to vertical position the pages may be turned for varying exposure through apertures 18' or 80. The free end rod 26' in folded position may be secured within clip 74. A recess 66 may be provided in the inside cover so as to accommodate the ring binder.
According to the FIGS. 11 and 12 modification page support rod 26 is secured in the ends of a pair of identical straps 76. Straps 76 are slidable within a slot in the front cover 12 sides and secured therein by means of lateral extension 78.
Manifestly, various hinge connections may be employed for exposing selectively any one of a number of pages through the front and/or back cover without departing from the spirit and scope of invention.
I claim:
1. A book binding of the type supporting a plurality of pages within a cover for selective exposure of a page through apertures in cover comprising:
(A) a cover and base pivotably attached to one another, said cover having a page exposing aperture; and
(B) a page support, including:
(i) a book binding rod attached to said base, extending adjacent the area of pivotable attachment of cover and base and means for displaceably mounting said rod with respect to said area;
(ii) at least two pages rotatably mounted upon said rod, so as to be turnable upon said rod in its attitude of displacement and any of the said pages thus being exposable through said cover aperture when said rod extends adjacent the area of pivotable attachment of said cover and base.
2. A book binding of the type supporting a plurality of pages within a front cover and a back cover for selective exposure of a page through an aperture in said cover comprising:
(A) a binding base;
(B) a front cover pivoted to said binding base;
((2) a back cover pivoted to said binding base and underlying said front cover;
(D) a page support pivoted to said back at one side and at the free side of said page support having a rotatable support extending adjacent the binding base as a support for a plurality of pages, so that pages are turnable upon said support when said book is opened and said page support is pivoted with respect to said back cover, and said pages being exposable through said aperture in the book cover when said book is closed; and
(E) at least two pages rotatably afiixed to said page support.
3. A- book binding as in claim 2, said page support including an open ended frame pivoted at its bottom to said back and including a transversely extending and removable page-engaging rod extending across its top adjacent the binding base.
4. A book binding as in claim 2, said page support including a complementary pair of articulated hinges, extensible vertically to a position apart from said binding base for turning of said pages and page support being foldable horizontally upon said front and back adjacent said binding base.
5. A book binding as in claim 2, said rod support including a rod pivotable at one side from horizontal to vertical for turning of said pages in a plane perpendicular to said frame.
6. A book binding as in claim 1, said page support including a pair of straps, each strap having one end supported in said cover and being connected to said page engaging rod at its other end, said pair of straps being extensible from said cover so as to permit rotation of said page on said rod.
7. A book binding as in claim 3, said binding base including a complementary recess for said page engaging rod and said front and back including complementary recesses for said page engaging rod.
8. A book binding as in claim 5, said front cover and back being hinged to said binding base adjacent said regesses and said page support being hinged to said back apart from said recesses.
9. A book binding as in claim 4, each said articulated hinge including slotted guides mounted in said binding base and engaging each said hinge adjacent said binding base.
