UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDVIN O. BRUEN,'OF BROOKLYN, NE\V YORK.
PYROTECHNlC-THROWING DEVICE.
fiPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 343,103, dated June 1, 1886.
Application filed March 31, 1886. Serial No. 197,330.
To all whom it may concern:-
Be it known that I, EDWIN O. BRUEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn,in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented acertain new, useful, and Improved Pyrotechnic-Throwing Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention is designed to provide a device for throwing into the air a burning firecracker or other pyrotechnic device employing a fuse at the time of explosion.
The invention consists of a pyrotechnicthrowing device comprising a holder for the pyrotechnic device provided with an actuating-springs which is rendered operative by the combustion of the fuse of the pyrotechnic device to suddenly and quickly throw such device into the air, as I will now proceed to particularly set forth and claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 a top plan view, of a toy pistol embodying my invention. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of Fig.2, taken on the line a: x.
In the drawings 1 have shown one very simple embodiment of my invention, and without thereby limiting my invention to any particular form of construction I will proceed to de' scribe my invention as thus illustrated.
a is a handle, provided with a holder, b, for thepyrotechnicdevice, saidholderbeiugshown asa'lever pivoted in one end of the handle and adapted to receive the pyrotechnic device in its rear end, and provided at its forward end with a spring, 0, which tends to throw the rear end up and away from the handle. A hook or detent, (1, projects from the handle across or into a slotted portion, 6, of the holder in such manner as to receive the fuse f of a fire-cracker, g, or other pyrotechnic device applied to the rear end of the holder, said fuse serving to retain the detent and holder in engagement until the fuse is consumed up to or beneath the detent, at which time the spring will act to throw the holder into the position indicated by dotted lines, Fig. 1, thereby ex- (No model.)
pelling the fire-cracker or other pyrotechnic device from the holder up into the air.
For convenience of applying the pyrotechnic device, the rear end of the holder may V be provided with a cavity, h, adapted to re ceive it, and this cavity will be found convenient in centering the device with relation to the detent.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A pyrotechnie-th rowing device compris ing a stock or handle, a holder for the pyrotechnic arranged upon said stock, a spring co-operating with said holder to move it and project the pyrotechnic. and a detent on said stock, which retains the holderin inactive position by the intervention of the unburned fuse-of the pyrotechnic device, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a handle, a lever pivoted thereto and constituting a holder for the pyrotechnic device, a spring connected to said holder, and the handle to forcibly rotate the holder upon its pivot, and a detent co-operating with a slotted portion of the holder and retaining the holder in inactive position by the interposition of the unburned fuse of the pyrotechnic device, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a handle, a pyrotechnic-holder pivoted in the forward end of the handle, and provided with a cavity to receive the pyrotechnic device, a spring connected to the holder and handle, to give the holder an impulse to expel the pyrotechnic device, and a fixed detent on the handle interposed between the handle and holder, the said handle and holder being locked together by the interposition between the detent and holder of the unburned fuse of a pyrotechnic device, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of March, A. D. 1886.
EDWVIN O. BRUEN.
