SPINNING AND TWISTING APPLIANCE Filed Nov. 6, 1967 mm 17217222 1-2. D ourc'y United States Patent f Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Spinning and twisting appliance which eliminates spinning and twisting inside a limited diameter such as a flier cap or ring and providing for a larger package cutting down on the number of knots per pound and number of doifs per package through the use of a revolving bobbin in association with a revolving traverse both on a rotating platform, and receiving threads to be processed in such a way as to provide for spinning and twisting on the bobbin through an extremely simple mechanism, and using electric stop motion devices for an electric motor which rotates the bobbin and traverse plat-form.
This invention relates to a spinning and twisting appliance, the principal object of which is to eliminate the usual limitation of spinning and twisting devices to a specific diameter because of the use of flier caps and rings, so that the present invention provides a larger package that cuts down the number of knots per pound and the number of doffs per package, and through the use of an electric motor for driving each spindle together with stop motions therefore greatly reducing waste.
The construction of the appliance resides specifically in a support, a rotary platform recessed therein, an electric motor driving the platform, the platform carrying a traverse having a pulley and a bobbin spindle also having a pulley, the traverse and spindle being mounted to be rotated on the platform, the spindle pulley being in driving contact with the wall of the recess, and thereby being continuously rotated as it revolves, the traverse on the other hand having an intermittent driving connection and being rotated slowly in steps e.g. one partial rotation per rotation of the platform, there being two or more threads, plies or filaments that are fed to an eye on the traverse and being spun and twisted to build up the bobbin, and also there being a stop motion for each of the plies or filaments to stop the motor in the event of a break.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.

FIG. 3 is an end view looking in the direction of arrow 3 in FIG. 2, parts being in section, and
FIG. 4 is a section on line 4-4 in FIG. 1.
In carrying out the invention, any kind of supporting framework may be utilized as indicated as for instance at 10. Some form of support such as a hanger 12 may be used providing a journal 14 which is vertical and which is driven for instance at its lower end as by a sprocket 16 and rotates a platform or table 18 at its upper end.
An electric motor M may be mounted as for instance on a support 22 and driving through a reduction gear 24, shaft 26, and a sprocket 28 or the like, rotates the shaft 16 at a slower rate of speed than the speed of the motor. Various necessary controls may be conveniently mounted as at 30.
3,430,429 Patented Mar. 4, 1969 Located on the platform 18 is a spindle 32 having a friction drive 33 in relation to a roller 34 at the lower end thereof, the spindle being mounted on the platform 18 and revolving therewith. The spindle 32 is mounted in a sliding block 21 and is urged out by a spring 23 to engage the wall of recess 25 in support 10. A more or less conventional traverse rod 36 is likewise mounted on the platform 18 and also has a roller at the bottom end thereof as at 38, the roller 38 however not being in contact with the wall of the recess. The traverse is provided with the usual follower 42 which rides up and down the traverse rod as the same is indexed and this carries a pot eye 44 for the reception of the threads being operated upon which are indicated at 46. The pot eye is guided in its vertical motion by means of a bracket 48 in general fixed relation on platform 18 with respect to the axis of the traverse rod.
The roller 38 engages a slightly projecting semi-soft dog of rubber, leather or the like as at 41 which is struck once at each platform revolution, indexing the traverse rod at each rotation of the platform sufliciently to traverse the follower 42 in steps from end to end of the bobbin on the spindle.
A stand for supply spools indicated at '52 may be provided and mounted in any way desired, providing for supply spools or rolls of any desired amount, the threads being collected adjacent the entrance to the gear 24 as at 56. In the present case, the threads are fed directly to the central axis of the motor which is hollow and each thread at 58 coming off its particular roller 60 is provided with any kind of a standard stop motion 62 which is connected to stop motor M in a known manner in the event of breakage of any of the threads or filaments.
It will be seen that a very simple mechanism is provided by this invention vfor spinning and twisted several plies or filaments rapidly on a bobbin which has a substantially indefinite diameter depending upon the size of the platform and this may be made in any desired or convenient size, so that the objects of the invention are clearly carried out.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim is:
1. A spinning and twisting appliance eliminating spinning and twisting inside a fixed diameter and providing a larger package,
comprising a rotating support, a rotatable traverse rod mounted in upright relation eccentrically on said rotating support, a bobbin spindle having a bobbin thereon and mounted on said rotating support for rotation thereon in parallel spaced relation with respect to said traverse rod,
an annular wall located concentrically with respect to said rotating support and slightly above the same, a roller on the bobbin spindle, the roller on the bobbin spindle being yieldably in engagement with said annular wall continuously,
a roller on the traverse rod just out of engagement with the annular wall for intermittently rotating the rod, a dog adjacent said annular wall, said dog extending slightly inwardly thereof and in the same plane with said traverse rod roller and in the path of revolution thereof,
whereby said traverse rod is indexed but once during each rotation of the rotating support whereas said bobbin spindle is continuously rotated,
means on said traverse rod receiving threads and continuously twisting and spinning the same, said means being cooperatively associated with respect to said traverse rod for reciprocating along the latter and 3 filling the bobbin as the bobbin and bobbin spindle rotate, and an electric motor rotating said rotating support,
thereby eliminating the spinning and twisting action restricted to a particular diameter and providing for a relatively larger package reducing the number of knots and the number of doffs.
2. The spinning and twisting appliance of claim 1 including a thread supply therefor and a stop motion applied to said thread for stopping the motor in case of a break in the thread.
3. The spinning and twisting appliance of claim 1 including a spring on the rotating support yieldably urging the bobbin spnidle roller against said annular wall.
4. The spinning and twisting appliance of claim 1 including a thread supply, a support for the motor located generally above the rotating support, guide means directing the threads from the thread supply to the thread receiving means on the traverse :rod guiding the same in spun and twisted condition to the bobbin.
5. The spinning and twisting appliance of claim 1 inthreads issuing from the hollow shaft to said thread receiving means on the traverse rod.
