s. BUTZ;
SHIRT.
Patented June 1,1886.
WITNESSES w. w M
NiTnD STATES ATENT Prien.
SAMUEL BUTZ, OF EASTO, PENNSYLVANIA SHIRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent. No. 343,006, dated June 1, 1886.
Application filed January 30, 1886. Serial No. 190,366. (No model.)
- To all whom, it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, SAMUEL BUTZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this speciiication, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the upper front portion of a shirt provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a similar view ofthe shirt without the bosom. Fig. 3 is alongitudinal sectional view of the front of the shir-t and of the bosom, and Fig. 4 is a rear view of the bosom.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
My invention has relation to that class of shirts in which the bosom is attached to buttons at the sides of the neckband, and it contemplates certain improvements upon the shirt for which Letters Patent of the United States No. 335,505 were granted to me on February 2, 1886; and it consists in the irnproved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the shirt, which is of the same construction as the shirt shown and described in the former application, having the neckband B, which is broader at its rear portion, C, and which is provided with the central back button, D, and the side buttons, E E, which buttons may either be permanently or removably secured to the said neckband, the distance between said buttons E E being alike on all sizes of shirts. The shirt is preferably formed with its opening in the front, as shown in the drawings; but a shirt buttoning in the back or at the side, or any other construction, may be constructed with the same neckband and be equally as applicable, the construction, material, or ornamentation of the Shirt being immaterial, the neckband being the only important part of theshirt. The distance from J to J on the neckband of the bosoms will be of different lengths, and the bosoms will have different slopes, so that when any desired neck-measure is wanted-say fifteen and one-half inches sloped bosom being attached to the ncckband of the shirt, the desired fifteen and one-half inches neck-measure will be obtained, and, in like manner, any measure can be obtained according to the spirit of my invention. rIhe bosom F has a neckband, C, which is provided with the usual central buttonhole,/H, and -with projecting ends or tabs LI, projecting beyond the edges of the bosom and formed with buttonholes J, which may be buttoned upon the side buttons of the neckband of the shirt, E E. The rear side of the bosom is provided with two transverse straps, K K, one above the other, and a strap, L, is buttoned by its button-holes M to the front buttons of the shirt,
and passes through the loops or straps upon the rear side of the bosom, securing the bosom to the shirt at its lower end, and preventing the bosom from working out while wearing it. The lower end' of the bosom is provided with the usual fly-tab, N, for the purpose of preventing it from sliding up, the tab being se cured to a button of the drawers or pantaloons in the usual manner.
It will be seen that by having the ends of the neckband of the bosom projecting beyond the side edges of the bosom, forming tabs, the bosom will not be obliged to be as broad as where the neckband of the bosom is only of the same length as the upper edge of the bosom, in which case the side edges of the bosom are liable to bear against the shoulders of the wearer and to cause a crumpled t of the bosom, or the buttons at the sides of thev IOO the necessity of having the straps secured to the shirt, as in the shirt described in the former application.
If desired, the tabs of the neckband oi' the 5 bosom may be passed through loops at the sides of the neokband of the shirt and be buttoned on the back button.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the 1o United States- The combinatiomwith a shirt, of the withindescribed supplemental shirt-bosom, consisting of an ordinary shirt-bosom, a semi-neckband, `straps attached by their ends to the back of said bosom, and a strip provided with button holes movably inserted under said straps, substantially as shown and described. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL BUTZ. Witnesses:
L. B. PEARsoN, JOHN S. NOBLE.
