UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE-y GEORGE F. \VALTER, OF CALEDONIA, IOIVA.
CLEVIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 342,887, dated June 1, 1886.
Application filed April 6, 1886. Serial No. 198,011. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. WALTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galedonia, in the county of Ringgold and State of Iowa, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Clevises; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to clevises, and has for its object to devise a means for fastening the bolt com monly employed for securing the clevis to a plow-beam or similar implement in such manner that said bolt may be readily removed when it is desired to detach the clevis, and when in position may be locked so as not to be accidentally displaced.
It consists in the novel features more fully hereinafter set forth, claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view vof a clevis Fig. 2 is a side view of the bolt for securing the clevis in position, a portion being broken away to show i the inner construction and location of parts.
The clevis A is of the usual U shaped form, and its ends A are expanded and coincidentally apertured for the passage of the pin or bolt B, having its head B provided with a catch, 0, which interlocks with one of the cl evises. The head B may be an integral part of the pin; or it may be cast thereon in any well-known manner. Its outer end, 13", is flattened, forming a finger-rest. Lugs 1), projecting from the sides of the head, have the catch 0 pivoted between them by means of the pivot 0. Spring D, bearing upon the outer end of the catch on its under side, forces the inner end thereof toward the bolt, and a pin or lug, 0',
carried by said end, is caused to engage one of a series of holes, a, around the end of the clevis,
and hold said bolt against accidental displacement, and still permit of its easy'removal by grasping the outer end, B of the head B, and the outer end, 0, of the catch, when said end will be forced inward toward the bolt-head, thus disengaging the lug or pin from the clevis. By having'a series of holes, a, the catch is more easily engaged and the position of the bolt may and a catch to engage one of the series of open-,
ings and lock the bolt and clevis together, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the clevis, of the retaining-bolt having a head flattened at its outer end and provided with lugs, a catch pivoted between the lugs, and a spring, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination of the clevis having an apertured end and an opening in its edge at right angles to said aperture, a bolt having a head provided with a flattened end and'lugs extending at right angles therefrom, a catch pivoted between the lugs and having a lug projecting from its inner end to engage the opening in the clevis, and a spring to actuate said catch, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presenc'eof two witnesses.
. GEORGE F. IVALTER. Witnesses:
J. O. MoCLURc, J AS. H. BURKE.
