Be it known that we, GEORGE W. VEH- MEYER and BENJAMIN C. ALEORD, citizens of the United States, residing at Goshen, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ghurns; and we hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to churns, and more particularly to that class of churns which have horizontal double dashers and are driven by concentric shafts.
This invention consists in the detailed construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims, whereby rotary motion is communicated to the dashers, and whereby the contents of the churn are kept at any desired temperature.
In the drawings, Figure l is aside view of a churn embodying ther invention, and having portions of the exterior casing broken away to show the-interior mechanism. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the churn with the cover removed. Fig. 3 is a detail view of larger size, taken on the line x x in Fig. 2, and showing the dashers, driving-pinions, and other parts in section.

A are the sides of the churn supported on legs a.
e is a bent sheetmetal plate which forms the bottom and ends of the churn.
The sides and ends of the churn are held together by means of the bolts a2.
e is a spout, provided with a plug or other means for closing it, situated at the lower part of the churn, so that the liquid contents can 'be run off when required.
B is a bent sheetmetal plate extending under the bottom of the churn, partly inelosing the sides of it, and thus forming the water-reservoir b. rIhe upper edges of the plate B are bent outward, forming the lips b. The edges are then bent round7 so as to form the tubes bl `and inclose the bolts b3, which support thesaid reservoir. The bolts bi* extend through the sides ot' the churn and assist in keeping them in position. The top of the plate Bis kept some distance below the top of the churn, so that water may be poured into the reservoir b any time during the operation of making butter without disturbing the contents of the churn. A spout, b4, is provided at the lower part of the reservoir b, and is furnished with a plug or other means for closing it, so that the water can be retained or run ofi', as required. By these means the contents of the churn can be kept at anydesired temperature during the operation of churning.

D is the outer dasher, consisting of cruciforrn ends united by crosspieces d.
d is a socket secured on the inside of one of the churn-sides A.
di is a pivot, which is secured to one end of the outer dasher, D, and has its bearing in the said socket d.
d3 is a plate provided with a square hole, and iirmly secured to the opposite end of the dasher D.
d4 is a socket secured to the inside of one of the ends of the dasher, on the other side of it from the pivot d2.
E is the inner dasher, consisting also of cruciform ends united by cross pieces c.
e is a pivot secured to one end of the dasher E, and which has its bearing in the socket d* on the end of the outer dasher.
e2 is a plate having a square hole in it, and firmly secured to the opposite end of the dasher E.
The dashers D and E are driven in opposite directions, and are preferably arranged to make the same number of revolutions in the same time. The outer dasher, D, is drivenby the pinion G, which is provided with a long hub, y, which extends through the side of the churn, and has a square portion, g', on the end of it which engages with the square hole in the plate d", secured to the end of the said dasher. The inner dasher, E, is driven from the pinion H, which is provided with asquare hole in it to t the shaft.
I is the inner dasherdriving-shaft, provided with a squared portion, i, at. one end, which engages with the square hole in the plate e2, secured to the end of the said dasher. The shaft I extends through the end of the dasher D and the side of the churn, and is provided with the squared portion i', upon which the pinion H is mounted. The outer end of the shaft I is journaled in the pinion-bracket cap, and is provided with the groove i2 for the locking-plate.
In order that the shaft I maybe drawn back so as to free the inner dasher without disturbing the actuating-gear, the round part of it between the square portions i and z" is made of a diameter not exceeding the smallest size of the portion marked t, and the end z is made smaller than the said round part. The outer end, which has the groove i2 in it, is made larger than the square portion i', so that the said portion may pass through the hole in the bracket-cap.
J is the pinion-b1 acket, secured on the ontside of the churn by screwsj, and further provided With the projecting portions j. j'lis the bracket-cap secured to the said projecting portionsj' ofthe bracket by the bolts ji.
K is the locking-plate for the shaft I. This plate has tapering dovetailed sides k, which slide in a corresponding recess in the cap ji, and a slot, k', which engages with the groove 2 of the said shaft and prevents it from sliding.
L is the driving-shaft of the churn, provided with the crank-handle Z for operatingit. rIhis shaft is journaled in the bracket J and capj, and has secured upon it the pinions M and N. Of these the pinion M gears into the pinion H and drives the inner dasher.
I is an idle-pinion, which runs loose on a pin, p, which projects from the side of bracket J. rIhis pinion gears into the two pinions G and N, and thus secures the revolution of the outer dasher when the shaft L is rotated.
Churn-dashers and driving mechanism constructed according to the present invention are more easily put together and taken apart for cleaning or repair' than those heretofore in use, besides being more effective and economical in action.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a churn, the combination of an outer dasher pivoted at one end to the side of the churn and provided with a square socket at the other end, an inner dasher pivoted at one end to the said outer dasher and provided with a square socket at the other end, the pinion G, provided with a long square-ended hub, the shaft I, having square portions t' and and the groove i2, the pinion I-I, having a square hole fitting the square portion i', but allowing the said shaft to slide longitudinally, the. bracket J, provided with the cap j, having a dovetailed tapering recess,lthe lockingplate K, having dovetailed tapering sides, and the slot k', and mechanism for revolving the said pinions in opposite directions, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a churn, the combination ofthe driving-shaft L, provided with means for revolving it, the pinions M and N, secured upon the said driving-shaft, the idle-pinion P, running loose on pin p, the pinion G, provided with a square-ended hub, the shaft I, having square portionsz' and i, and the groove i2, the pinion H, fitting the square portion i, but allowing the said shaft to slide longitudinally, the bracket J, the Cap jl, having a dovetailed tapering recess in it, the locking-plate K, iitting the said recess and engaging with the groove i in the shaft, the inner dasher, E, op-
erated by the shaft I, and the outer dasher, D, operated by the hub of the pinion G, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
