Description
Dec. 3, 1968 E. H. DAHLBERG DECLINING BOARD Filed NOV.
@AJM/.f
United States Patent l 3,413,664 DECLINING BOARD Ernest Harold Dahlberg, 917 Lincoln Ave., Erie, Pa. 16505 Filed Nov. 9, 1966, Ser. No. 593,007 2 Claims. (Cl. 5-327) ABSTRACT F THE DISCLOSURE The body support disclosed herein is for the purpose of supporting the torso and head of human being in an inclined position, so that liquid will clear from his throat and lungs. The device is made up of a vertical angle suitable to be supported on a lioor beside a bed and a torso support attached to the vertical legs and extending downward and `having a head rest on which the head of the individual can be rested. The legs are pivotally supported to the torso support so that the device can be folded up for storage.
This invention relates to supports and, more particularly, to a support means by enabling a human individual to clear liquids from his throat and lungs that will cause objectionable physical conditions in his body.
The support according to the invention enables a person to support his legs and thighs on a bed or similar support and to support his torso and head in a declined position so that phlegm and other liquids will be aided by gravity to escape and to be removed from his lungs and throat.
It is an object of the invention to provide an improved support for the body of a person.
It is another object of the invention to provide a support for a human individual which is simple in construction, economical to manufacture, and simple and etiicient to use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a support which may be used in combination with a bed to support a person in declining position with his head resting on the head rest attached to the support.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists of the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, size, proportions, and minor details of construction without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings:
FIG. l is a side view of the support according to the invention.
FIG. 2 is.an isometric View of the support.
FIG. 3 is a top view of the support.
Now with more particular reference to the drawings, the support is disclosed alongside the bed 11. The bed 11 has a mattress 12, leg 13, and caster 14 of a conventional type. The support 10 has a torso support element 16 with a head rest 17 that may be fixed to the torso support or it may be hinged to it so that it will be stopped in a position generally perpendicular to the torso support.
The leg is hinged to the ears 25 at 18 and can be folded into a generally parallel relation to the torso support 16. The leg 15 is held in space relation to the torso support by means of the braces which may be pivoted to the leg 15 at 21 and may have a hook that would hook over a stud 19 in the torso support 16 in a conventional manner. The torso support element is held to said leg 15 and extends downward and from it at an angle of approximately 45 degrees.
3,413,664 Patented Dec. 3, 1968 During operation the person using the support will set the torso support in a position relative to the bed, as indicated in FIG. l, with leg 15 in juxtaposition and generally parallel to the leg 13 of the bed. Then the person using the support would rest his legs and thighs on the bed and incline his torso on top of the torso support element 16 with his head resting against the head rest 17, thus, any liquid in his lungs would be urged by gravity to run out and he could eliminate them easily.
It is intended that the device be used for fifteen or twenty minute periods two or three times a day. This has been discovered to be suiiicient to prevent people from snoring because any liquid would be eliminated from their lungs. It is also beneficial to persons having sinus trouble or bronchitis and other ailments of the nose, throat and chest.
With this device, as shown in present invention, relief can be given to suffering people.
The foregoing specifications set forth the invention in its preferred Ipractical forms but the structure shown is Ycapable of modification within a range of equivalents without departing from the invention which is to be understood is bnoadly novel as is commensurate with the appended claims.
F[The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:
1. A support for an individual in combination with a bed comprising;
a leg adapted to be disposed in vertical juxtaposition to a bed,
a torso support element attached to said leg and extending downward and away from tone end thereof,
said torso support element having a torso upwardly facing engaging surface of suliicient length to support the torso and head of an adult disposed at approximately forty-tive degrees to said leg,
and a head rest fixed to said torso support element adjacent the end remote from said leg and extending generally at right angles thereto whereby a person can rest face down with his thighs on said bed, his torso on said torso support element and his head against said head rest,
said bed having a mattress terminating at a side edge,
said vertical leg of said support being disposed in engagement with said bed,
said torso support element being disposed adjacent the top of said mattress adjacent the top edge thereof, and extending downward therefrom to engage a floor.
2. The support recited in claim 1 wherein;
said leg is swingably connected to said torso support element and,
means is provided to hold said leg in xed angular relation to said torso support element.
