Tear strips 1 are attached to a web 2 of wrapping material, e.g. " Cellophane " (Trade Mark), coated in the area to which the strips are to be applied with an adhesive 14 by means of a roller 10, the strips being supplied by conventional means to a support 3 from which they are drawn on to a bonding roller 5. The ends of the strips 1 overlap the end of the support 3 and are engaged by suction through holes (4), Fig. 2 (not shown), in a strip (18) of the roller 5, the suction being operative only over an arc between the points 20 and 21 in the rotation of the roller.

(Cl. 931) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A device for attaching tear strips at intervals to a ribbon of packaging material comprises means for presenting the tear strips successively to a constant speed roller to which they are temporarily adhered by suction, means for passing the ribbon continuously over the roller where it is pressed against the tear strips, and means for applying to said ribbon, in advance of said roller, a moist adhesive material which is applied along a narrow path on the ribbon surface which later contacts said tear strips.
This invention relates to a mechanism for applying tear strips or small ribbons along a ribbon composed of a wrapping material which has been previously treated by means of a suitable cement within the application region of the small ribbon. Said small ribbons, no matter how produced and laid down upon an intermediate support,
- project with one of their ends from said support, in correspondence of a roller provided with suction holes which, through the suction, catch a small ribbon after a small ribbon and wrap themselves with the small ribbon itself, carrying it to a region treated with a gluing material for the ribbon. The ribbon and the small ribbon are therefore pressed one against the other, so that the small ribbon sticks to the ribbon.
The invention is described in an exemplary and nonlimitative way, and with reference to a preferred embodiment in the following specification and in the enclosed partial schematic drawings which are integral with the invention itself, and in which:
FIG. 1 is a side view of the mechanism, and
FIG. 2 is a view in part, along the line aa of FIG. 1. With reference now to the drawings, with 6 a spool of wrapping material is indicated, for instance cellophane, from which, through a compensating stretching device, of a conventional type, generally indicated by 7, the ribbon 2 is uncoiling which, through means which are not indicated, is drawn so that it winds itself on the transmission idle rollers 8 and 9, on the moistening idle roller 10, on the welding roller and then it travels forwards, in the direction marked by the arrow 11.
The moistening roller 10, which is entrained into rotation by the ribbon in the direction of the arrow, has two races to the sides of a band 12, against which a roving 13 is pressed which, being dipped within the tray 15 containnig the solvent-gluing liquid 14, causes the liquid to raise due to capillarity so that the liquid moistens the band 12.
The races 16, 17 to the sides of the band 12 serve to limit and define the moistened region and to avoid an extended smearing.
The small ribbons 1, no matter how produced, are rhythmically deposed, ribbon after ribbon, upon an intermediate support 3, by conventional not illustrated means and are left there. The small ribbons project with their ends 20 from that support so that said end be at the level of the band 18 of a gluing roller 5.
The band 18 is provided with a close series of sma holes 4 which are subjected to a suction action, by cor ventional and non-represented means, along the entire at which starts from a region 20 in which the projectin edge of the small ribbon 1 is caught up to a point of th region 21 in which to the small ribbon 1 the ribbon 2 1' superposed, out of the mentioned region said small hole being in communication with the atmosphere.
The operation mode is as follows:
The ribbon 2 drawn along the direction of the arm 11 unwinds from the spool 6 and winding itself on th stretching-compensating roller 7 and on the transmissio rollers 8, 9 reaches the moistening roller 10, which moist ens it along the band 12, and reaches then the drum 5 upon which the ribbon winds itself in the region 21, pres: ing due to the curvature against the small ribbon 1, whic is interposed between the ribbon 2 and the drum 5, in: in the moistened region, so adhering to the ribbon an sticking to it.
The small ribbons 1, in turn, as soon as they reach th drum 5 by the projecting edge of the support 3, are caugl by the small holes 4 which are in suction condition an are entrained so that they wind themselves upon the drill itself up to the region under the ribbon 2, in the zone 21 Having so described the invention, it is obvious thz variants and alternative solutions can be practised witl out going beyond the scope of this patent, by which it intended to protect all those realisations and achievemex which are within the spirit and the object of the pater itself.
I claim:
1. A mechanism for applying tear strips upon a ribbo composed of a wrapping material, comprising a drivin and conveying roller for the tear strips, means to preset them to the roller and to temporarily adhere them t the roller, means to guide a ribbon of wrapping materi: around the roller and in contact with the tear strips, an means to moisten, by a suitable solvent-gluing materia the region of the ribbon which is intended to press again: the tear strips, the moistening means for the ribbon con prising a moistening roller upon which the ribbon winr itself in part, entraining it into rotation, the moistenin roller 10 having a moistening band 12 comprised betwee two races 16, 17.

A mechanism according to claim 1, characterize in that the band 18 of the driving roller for the tear stri; is provided with a plurality of holes which are subjected t a suction action within the region comprised between tl point at which the edge of the tear strip 1, projectir from the support 3, skims the driving roller 5 and a poi] comprised within the winding region 21 of the ribbo upon the driving roller 5, while, out of this region, tl: holes are put in communication with the atmosphere.
3. A mechanism according to claim 1, characterised i that the moistening band 12 of the moistening roller 1 is in turn moistened through a roving 13, pressed again said band, which gets the liquid raised by capillarity fro] a reservoir.
4. A mechanism according to claim 1, characterised i that the band 18 of the driving and conveying roller which the mutual compression between the ribbon at the tear strips takes place, is comprised between two ract 19 and 20.
