(Cl. 2-253) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A trouser construction and method for forming the same, which trouser construction includes a side pocket having inner and outer side panels which are joined together to form a pocket with a side opening, a watch pocket formed integrally with the side pocket by connecting the inner and outer side panels together to define a watch pocket therebetween, and a waist band which extends inwardly and thereby maintains the watch pocket opening in a closed condition while the trousers are being worn.

This invention relates to a new and improved watch pocket construction for trousers and particularly for washable work trousers.

In conventional trouser construction, the watch pocket is adjacent the outer surface of the trousers and has an opening therethrough. As a result, the pocket can present an unsightly bulge when containing a watch which will disrupt the smooth outer contour of the pants surface. Moreover, when the wearer bends forward, the watch pocket opening has a tendency to gap open such that the watch can easily become dislodged and fall out.

A further disadvantage of conventional watch pocket design pertains to their mode of construction. Since they are made separately from the side pockets and yet in close proximity thereto, a large number of intricate sewing operations are required. This increases the cost of the trousers such that watch pockets are not prevalent in cheaper trousers because of the additional cost required.

An object of my invention is to provide a trouser construction in which the trouser waistband coacts with the watch pocket in such a way that the watch pocket opening does not have a tendency to gap open when the wearer bends forward.

Another object of this invention is to provide a simplified method for forming a trouser construction containing a watch pocket which reduces the number of operations required for the production of a watch pocket.

A still further object of my invention is to provide a trouser construction in which the watch pocket is formed integrally with a side pocket and with the waistband such that the watch pocket has increased strength and greater wearability.

Additional objects will become apparent from a reading of the specification and claims which follow.

My invention provides a watch pocket construction in which the pocket opening and the waistband of the trousers coact in such a manner as to keep the pocket opening tightly closed even when the wearer bends for- Ward from the waist. Further, my invention involves a trouser construction in which the watch pocket may be formed integrally with a side pocket and with the waistband to produce a watch pocket having increased strength and wearability. By forming the watch pocket integrally with a side trouser pocket, my invention provides a novel method for constructing trousers containing a watch pocket in which the number of sewing operations is greatly reduced from those normally employed in forming trousers containing watch pockets.

The invention will be more clearly understood from the description which follows of a preferred embodiment taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:

The trousers are formed from a rear trouser portion 2 and a front trouser portion 4 which are joined together along a side seam 6 with stitching 9. The front trouser portion includes a side pocket 8- and constructed integrally therewith a watch pocket 10. Situated at the upper portion of the trousers are belt loops 12. Turning to FIG. 2, the upper portion of the trousers includes a waistband 15. Joined to the waistband is a watch pocket opening flap 14 to the back of which is attached a label 16. The opening between the flap 14 and waistband 15 forms the watch pocket opening which in its open position appears as indicated at 18.

As shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, the pocket 8 is constructed from a single piece of cloth which is folded over at 11 to form overlying side panels 5 and 7. The side panels are stitched together along a seam as shown at 44 to form the bottom of the pocket. To the inner side panel 5 is stitched a wear liner 24. The wear liner is formed of a wear resistant material preferably having the same color as the trousers to prevent undue wear at the mouth of the pocket and, at the same time, prevent the pocket material from showing around the mouth of the pocket. The wear liner is sewn to the inner pocket panel along the seam as indicated at 26 and is also connected to the side seam 6 and the waistband 15 in a manner to be fully described later.

The bottom edge of the waistband 15 is sewn to the trousers along a seam as indicated at 32. The bottom and side portions of the watch pocket are formed by stitching through the side panels 5 and 7 of the pocket along the line indicated at 30 running from the fold 11 of the pocket to approximately the bottom edge of the waistband as indicated at 32.

The rearward edge of the front trouser portion 4 is folded over at 20 and connected to the outer pocket panel 7 along a stitching line 22. The label 16 is affixed to the flap 14 by side stitchings 36 and upper and lower stitchings 38. The side stitchings 36, as shown in FIGS. 7 and 7a, pass completely through the waist section of the trouser to hold the label 16 to the flap 14 and, at the same 3 time, hold the flap 14 to the waistband 15 and front trouser portion 4. Thus, stitching 36 fulfills the dual function of holding on label 16 and completing the vertical seams of the watch pocket 10. The upper and lower stitchings 38 pass only through the label 16 and flap 14.

The mode of assembly of my pocket construction is more clearly shown in FIGS. 5, 6 and 11 of the drawings. Looking at FIG. 5, the side panels of the side pocket are joined together along their bottom edge by stitching along line 44. The inner panel 5 is slit along line 54 to divide the upper portion of the panel and form a tab 48 and a watch pocket opening flap 14. The wear liner 24 is then sewn to the inner pocket panel 5 along a stitching line indicated at 26, and the bottom portion of the watch pocket is formed by stitching 30 which passes through the inner and outer side panels 5 and 7. As shown in FIG. 11, the outer side panel 7 is slit adjacent its forward edge to define a tab 52 which folds over along the line indicated at 60. A tab 46 is also formed by the slit 57.

Upon completion of the sewing of the wear liner 24 to the inner pocket panel 5 and the stitching of line 30 to define the lower portion of the watch pocket, the label 16 is stitched to flap 14 along stitch lines 38, as shown in FIG. 4. The side seam 6 is then made with stitching 9 which joins the front and rear trouser portions 4 and 2 and also joins the rearward edge of inner side panel 5 to the trousers. This is best shown in FIG. 4. The tab portion 48, including the wear strip 24, which is affixed thereto, is then placed beneath the waistband 15, which includes a stiffener 42. The waistband is then sewn along its upper edge to the trouser portion which is folded over at 40 to form a smooth upper seam. The tab 52 is placed between the waistband 15 and the front trouser portion 4 and waistband 15 are sewn together along the stitching line 32. In this operation, the stitching 32 performs the dual function of fastening the lower edge of the waistband to the trousers and at the same time firmly securing the tab 52 between the waistband 15 and trouser portion 4 to form a firm connection between the outer side panel 7 and the waistband 15. The watch pocket is then completed by forming side stitches 36 which pass through the entire waist portion of the trousers including the front trouser portion 4, waistband 1S, waistband stiffener 42, tab portion 46, watch pocket flap 14, and the label 16. These stitchings provide the dual function of holding the label securely to the trousers, and, at the same time, forming the watch pocket opening.

The appearance of the watch pocket in the region of the waistband is best shown in FIG. 7. The front trouser portion 4, the tab 52, waistband stiffener 42, and waistband 15 are firmly connected to the upstanding pocket portion 14 and label 16 by stitching 36. The several stitching lines 9 and 58 which define the region of the side pocket opening, are more clearly shown in FIG. 7a, which is an enlarged view of this portion of FIG. 7. The rear trouser portion 2 is folded over at its forward end to form a smooth unbroken edge surface after which it is stitched to the wear liner 24, the upstanding tab 48 of the inner side panel 5, waistband stiffener 42 and. waistband 15. The stitching line is shown at 9. The seam immediately adjacent the pocket opening is formed in part by folding the rearward edge of the front trouser portion 4 over the outer pocket panel 7. Against this is placed the wear liner 24 attached to upstanding tab 48 of the inner side panel by means of stitching 26. The waistband and stiffener are then placed in position and the seam is completed by stitching through the waistband portion at 58.

A vertical section through the seam adjacent the pocket opening is shown in FIG. 10. The upper edge of the front trouser portion 4 is folded over into contact with the wear liner 24, which is in contact with the tab 48 of inner side panel 5. Bearing against tab 48 are the waistband 15 and waistband stiffener 42. As shown in FIG. 10a, which is an enlarged view of the upper seam shown in FIG. 10, the waistband is folded over at its upper edge to give a smooth edge and to partially enclose the stitfener 42. The upper seam is completed by stitching along the line 56.

FIG. 8, taken along the lines 88 of FIG. 4, shows the structure of the pocket below the waistband area. The front trouser portion 4 fits closely against the outer side panel 7. The outer side panel 7 and inner side panel 5 are joined together along stitching line 30 which forms the lower portion of the watch pocket 10 and the wear liner 24 and inner pocket panel 5 are joined together along stitching line 26. The rearward edge of the front trouser portion 4 is folded over the edge of the outer side panel 7 and stitched at 22 to form a smooth surface along the opening of the side pocket. The wear liner 24, inner side panel 5 and the rear trouser portion 2 are joined together by stitching at 9. As shown, the rear trouser portion 2 is folded over at the seam to present a smooth edge.

FIG. 8a, which is an enlarged sectional view of the pocket shown in FIG. 8, more clearly shows the relationship between the front pants portion 4, the outer side panel 7, the wear liner 24, and the inner side panel 5 in the region of the seam.

FIG. 9 is a vertical section through the watch pocket 19 taken along the lines 99 of FIG. 4. The figure shows the functioning of the waistband 15 in maintaining the watch pocket opening closed. More specifically, the thickness of cloth represented by the front pants portion 4, the waistband 15 and stiffener 42 forms an inwardly extending ridge which bears against the body of the wearer. The bottom of the waistband covers the watch pocket as shown by the curved surface 64 formed by the folding of the waistband 15 over the waistband stiffener 42. This portion of the waistband forms, what is in essence, the top of the watch pocket.

Since the waistband passes about the body of the wearer, my watch pocket construction has no tendency to gap open, as in the case of previous watch pockets, when the wearer bends forward from the waist. Rather, in my construction, the wearers bending movements have a tendency to hold the watch pocket more firmly closed since the wearers bending movements have a tendency to enlarge his waist and thereby increase the tension upon the waistband.

A further advantage of my trouser construction is that it simplifies cleaning of the trousers. In conventional trouser constructions including a watch pocket, the watch pocket is made separately from the side pockets and makes the cleaning of the trousers more difficult. To illustrate, if the trousers are dry cleaned the watch pocket can become folded or crumpled. If the watch pocket is then not straightened prior to the pressing operation, the outer surface of the trousers will be creased or wrinkled in the vicinity of the watch pocket. To prevent this from happening, it is necessary that the watch pocket be pulled flat prior to the pressing operation. This requires an additional step in the cleaning operation which is eliminated by the present trouser construction.

Further, when trousers including a conventional watch pocket are laundered, the trousers are difficult to dry in the region of the watch pocket. This is caused by the several additional layers of cloth in this area which tend to trap moisture between the watch pocket and the side pocket which is in proximity thereto. Frequently, the result is that the trousers are not sufficiently dried which results in discomfort to the wearer when the trousers are worn and it is discovered that they are still damp in the region of the watch pocket.

The present trouser construction facilitates laundering since there are no extra thicknesses of cloth in the region of the watch pocket which is made integrally with the side pocket. As a result, the trousers are more easily dried and need not be subjected to an extra long drying cycle merely to dry the watch pocket.

While I have described particular embodiments of my invention for the purpose of illustration, it should be understood that various modifications and adaptations thereof may be made within the spirit of the invention, as set forth in the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A trouser construction comprising:

a front trouser portion and a rear trouser portion joined along a seam;

an inwardly projecting waistband having an inner and an outer surface, said outer surface joined to said front and rear trouser portions;

a side pocket having inner and outer side panels joined to form a pocket with a side opening;

said side panels joined together to form a watch pocket in the upper portion of said side pocket;

a slit in said outer panel adjacent one side thereof to define a first tab at the upper edge of said outer panel;

a slit in said inner panel defining a second tab and a watch pocket opening flap at the upper edge of said inner panel;

said first and second tabs extending between and joined to said waistband and said front trouser portion; and

said watch pocket opening fiap joined to said inner surface of said waistband to form a watch pocket opening for said watch pocket.

2. A trouser construction comprising:

a front trouser portion and a rear trouser portion joined along a seam;

an inwardly projecting waistband having an inner surface and an outer surface joined to said front and rear trouser portions;

a side pocket having inner and outer side panels joined along their forward and bottom edges to form a pocket having a side opening;

said inner and outer side panels joined together to form a watch pocket in the upper portion of said side pocket;

said watch pocket having a first side adjacent the forward edges of said inner and outer side panels, and a second side spaced rearwardly from said first side;

a slit in the upper edge of said outer side panel adjacent its forward edge to form a first tab at the upper edge of said outer panel;

a slit in the upper edge of said inner side panel in line with the second side of said watch pocket;

a second tab and a watch pocket opening fiap formed in said inner side panel by said slit;

said first and second tabs extending between and joined to said waistband and said front trouser portion; and

said watch pocket opening flap joined to theinner surface of said waistband to form a watch pocket openmg.

3. The trouser construction of claim 2 wherein said side pocket is formed from a single piece of cloth which is folded to form said inner and outer side panels with the fold line occurring at the forward edges of said inner and outer side panels.

4. The trouser construction of claim 3 wherein said inner and outer side panels are joined together to form a watch pocket by stitching running from the folded forward edge of said inner and outer side panels in a line transverse to said side panels to a point intermediate the forward and rearward edges of said side panels and then running toward the upper edges of said side panels to a point adjacent and below said slit in the upper edge of said inner side panel.

5. A method for forming a trouser construction containing a watch pocket comprising:

joining a front and rear trouser portion along a seam;

forming a side pocket having overlying inner and outer side panels by connecting said side panels along at least one edge;

joining the upper portions of said side panels together to form a watch pocket;

slitting said outer side panel adjacent its forward edge to form a tab along its upper edge; slitting the upper edge of said inner side panel to form a tab and a watch pocket opening flap;

joining the outer surface of a waistband to said front and rear trouser portions and said side pocket by first placing the tab on said outer panel and the tab on said inner panel between said waistband and said trouser portions; and

joining said watch pocket opening flap to the inner surface of said waistband.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein a label is placed against the inner surface of said watch pocket opening flap; and

said label is stitched to said flap with the side stitching for said label joining said flap to said waistband.

7. A trouser construction comprising:

a trouser portion;

a side pocket having inner and outer side panels joined to form a pocket with a side opening;

stitching means joining the upper portions of said side panels together to form a watch pocket having an opening extending along its top edge; and

a waist band positioned between and connected to said trouser portion and said side panels and forming the outer wall of said opening whereby the opening of said watch pocket is maintained in a closed position during the wearing of said trouser construction.
