Be it known that I, JonN DIeKAsoN, a citiof the United States, residing at Vevay, the county'of Switzerland and State of In- 1a, have invented certain new and useful rovernents in Portable Farm-Fences; and

hereby declare the following to be a full, i r, and exact description of the invention, ch as will enable othersskilled in the art to rl 'ch it appertains to make and use the same. Theinvention relates to portable fences, and .s for its object the construction of a cheap, -yrong, durable, and portable fence made up panels secured together by battens. F4he invention willbe hereinafter described, d particularly pointed out in the claim. In the accompanying drawings, which form i. part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective; Fig.-2,a side elevation of one end of a panel; and Fig. 3 is an end View. c rlhe purpose of my invention is to construct board fences in panels which may be built complete in a worl'r-shop, or other convenient place under cover, and conveyed, in large or small numbers, lto any place where it is de sired to eret a fence.

This fence is of that class which requires no digging of post-holes, Vasthe panelsare held between crossed stakes which simplyr restupy'on the ground; but to prevent its being easily `blown over by wind or displaced by animals l the panels are anchored to the ground-at each end between the stakes.

v:Reference being had to the drawings and the letters marked thereon, A represents panels the full height ofthe fence to be constructed, y and composed of horizontal bars c, the nuni ber of-which may be varied to suit circumstances, and vertical [battons b c, secured to both sides of the bars opposite to each other, .and near the ends thereof. The battens b c may be secured to the bars in any suitable manner. Tailing is, however, considered preferable.

In practice I make the bars about one inch the battens the saine thickness and three or four inches wide. The dimensions given may, however, be varied, as desired. y

my invention the ground is spaced oii according to the length of the panels A, and anchors B,havin`g twisted wire d around them, are planted in the ground. Two panels are then set in position with the ends of the bars c Z overlapping, as shown. rIhe stakes C D are then inserted and crossed between the upper two bars, the upper one resting in the crotch formed by the crossed stakes, and the second rail'iitting in the crotch below the crossing. The stakes and the panels are now secured together by a continuons `wire,which is looped over each stake G D at e f, crossed over the top of the upper bar, a, and the free end g of the wire which forms the loopf on stake C, is drawn down on the outside of the stake D, crossed over the outside of the stake C, passed under the second bar to the opposite side of the fence, where it meets the wire h, which f constitutes the free end oi the loop e, and is crossed over the upper bar, c, in the opposite direction to the wire g, drawn down on the outside of stake C, crossed over to the outside oi' stake D, passed under the second bar around stake C, back again under the bar, around stake D, and forms a connection with wire g by a twist, t'. The wire d, secured to the anchor B, is now drawn up on opposite sides ofthe lower bar, crossed on top of said bar and `-secured to the stakes C D at 7c Z. Thewire d need not necessarily be wound around"y the lower bar of the panel, as it may be carried up to anyof the bars in the panel.

Should the fence settle, the wires d, connected tothe anchors B, may be removed from the stakesand the bar and untwisted until the slack is taken up, when the Wire may again be drawn up around the bar and secured to the stakes, as in the iirst instance.

Instead of taking up the slack in the wire secured to 'the anchor by untwisting it, the slack may be taken up by blocking up the stakes with wood orstones being placed under them.

The stakes may be made of any suitable dimensionswhich will work up lumber advantageously without` loss.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is--- i A fence composed of detachable panels havcured together and supported by' crossed stakes, to which they aresecured by a Wire Wrapping, in combination with an embedded' anchor having Wire attached thereto and secured to a bar of the panel,and to both of the stakes on opposite sides of the panel, by the free ends ofthe Wire, substantially as described.

It is hereby certifled that in Letters Patent No. 340,888, granted May 4, 1886, upon the application of Jolm Diokason, of Vevey, Indiana, for an improvement iu Fences, an error appears in the printed specifica-tion requiring correction as follows: In line 1, page 2, the word bottoms should read battenti; and that the Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Ofce.
