COMBINATION-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,942, dated April 27, 1886.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we. CHARLES FERNANDEZ ELLIorTo and JOHN WILLIAM MoGARvEY, of Seneca Falls, in the county of Seneca, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination-Locks, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
In said drawings, Figure I is a front view ofthe devices embodying our invention, the cover or faceplate being removed to better illustrate more important parts of the invention. Fig. II is a longitudinal section showing theloek in position for operatingthe bolt.V
Fig. III shows the lock with the combination broken to prevent the movement of the bolt. Fig. IV is a transverse section on line :t x, Fig. II,including the faceplate and case ofthe lock. Fig. V is a transverse section on line yg/,Fig II. Figs. VI, VII, and VIII are detail views of the rotary disk, bolt,and washer,respectively. Fig. IXis a detached view of the bolt-guide, taken in a plane at right angles to that of the section shown in Fig. II; and Fig. X is a view of one end of the face-plate and lock, showing the arrangement of the indexes on said parts.

This invention relates to the class of combination-locks in which abolt provided with lat eral projections slides in a longitudinallygrooved guide, from which the projections of the bolt protrude. Disks are mounted interchangeably on said boltguide, and each provided with a notch for thepassage of the projections of the bolt, and with an index-mark arranged in relation to the said passage different from those of the other disks.
The invention consists in an improved construction and combination of the component parts of t-he lock, whereby the indexed locking rings or disks are arranged more conipactly side by side, and thus the length of the lock is reduced, and the lock is especially adapted to be seated in a mortise in the door and engage with a catch secured in the jamb of the door.
To enable others skilled in the art to which this invention pertains to make and use our Serial No. 174,883. (No model.)
invention, we now describe in detail its construction and operation.
B represents the bolt of the lock, said bolt sliding rectilinearly in a guide, A, consisting of a cylindrical bar which is provided with a longitudinal groove, s, for the reception of the bolt. This bolt is provided with a series of lateral projections or lugs, b b, which project at the side of the guide A. Upon the guide A are mounteda series of disks, C G, which are tted loosely thereon, so as to allow them to be rotated at right angles to the axis of the bolt. Each of said disks is provided with a notch, n, of proper size to form a passage for the lugs b b of the bolt B, and the exterior of said disk has marked upon it indexes, which may consist either of figures or letters, the indexes of each of the disks being arranged in relation to the notch a differently from those ofthe other disks, for the purpose here inafter explained.
` Between the disks C O are interposed washers D D, which are of the same or greater thickness than the lugs b b, and are seated in countersinks d, formed in one side of the respective disks. Said washers are secured stationary on the bolt-guide A by providing the latter with a series of notches, a a, and providing the washers with slots c c, which allow the washers to be slipped laterally onto the notched portions of the bolt-guide and firmly embracing the same. as illustrated in Fig. V of the drawings. The slots c c at the same time serve as ports for the reception of the lugs b b of the bolt while revolving the' disks C C in the operation of setting the lock, as hereinafter explained.
The described disks C C and washers D are confined between two collars, E E, which are detachably secured to the bolt-guide A at the ends of the series of disks and washers. A Washer, h, is interposed between the Iirst or last of the series of disks C C and adjacent collar E, and set-screws i are inserted through the said collar and made to bear on the washer h, for the purpose of taking up the Wear between the disks C C.
Z represents the face-plate of the case m, in which the described lock is secured by screws 0 0, passing through the case and into the collars E E, the face-plate Z being provided with an opening which exposes a portion of each of the disks C C, as illustrated in Fig. X of the drawings. At the ends of the said opening the face-plate is provided with an index-mark, r, by which to set the disks C C, as hereinafter presently explained.
Each of the disks C C has its index-marks arranged in relation to the notch a different from those of the other disks, and in the case here presented the tive disks C C have their indexes arranged so that by placing them in position to bring in coincidence the indeX- marks 7, 4, 1, G, and 2 the notches n of the several disks are also in coincidence with each other and with the slot c of the washers D D, and consequently also in range with the lugs b b of the bolt and with the indeX-mark r on the face-plate, and thus the bolt B is allowed to slide freely longitudinally in the lock.
The lugs b b are arranged on the bolt in the same relative position asthewashers DD Within the lock, and When the bolt is in a projected position the lugs b b lie in the slots c c of the washers, as represented in Figs. II and lll of the drawings, and when in that position the disks CCare allowed to rotate on the bolt-guide A. By turning said disks so as to carry their notches n out of range with the lugs b b of the bolt the retraction of the latter is prevented, as representedin Fig. Ill ofthe drawings. Consequently, in order to operate the bolt, it is necessary to restore the disks C C to their required position, to bring into coincidence the index-marks Nos. 7, 4, l, 6, and 2, (shown in Fig. I of the drawings) and therefore no one will be able to operate alock without the knowledge of the combination of the indexes before stated.
When it is desired to change the combination, the disks C C are to be interchanged in their positions, and this is effected by removing t-he lock from its case, and, after resetting it to its previous combination, withdrawing the bolt B from the boltvguide A, then removing one of the collars E, and slipping the disks C C, with their washers D D, from the bolt-guide A and replacing them in a different order, the collar E being then again secured to the boltguide A, the disks C C adjusted to their new combination, and the bolt B inserted into the lock, the latter is then replaced into its case m.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In combination with the bolt-guide A, collars E E, and looselymounted disksC C, the washer h, interposed between the collar and adjacent disk, and set-screws t' i, passing through the collar and bearing on the disk, substantially as described and shown, for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of thebolt-guide A, provided with the groove s and notches a a, the bolt B, provided with lugs b b, the rotary disks C C, provided with the notch n and countersiuks d, and the washers D, seated in said countersinks, and provided with slots c, and embracing thereby the notched portions of the bolt guide, substantially as described and shown.
3. The improved combination lock, composed ofthe bolt-guide A, provided with the groove s and notches a a, the bolt B, provided with lugs b b, the rotary disks C, provided with notches n and countersinks d, the washers D, seated in said countersinks and provided with the slots c, and the collars E E, detachably secured to the boltguide at the ends of the series of disks C C, and indexes on the exterior of disks and collars, substantiall as described and shown.
