FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,812. dated April 27, 1886.
Application filed September 8, 1885. Serial No. 176,498. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM: NERAcHEE, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Extinguishers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to fire-extinguishers of that class in which the water is conducted to the apartment or building by permanent pipes, the openings of which into the apartment are each closed by a valve, which valve, when disengaged from its seat on the end of the pipe, acts as a distributer to scatter the water and diffuse it about the apartment.
The object of my invention is to hold the valve to its seat by means of a yielding support, so that the valve and the pipe may be kept free from dust before the water is turned on, but may yield and open the valve when the pressure of the water acts thereon.
The sprinklers to whichvmy invention is applied are designed to be placed in differ out parts of the buildings liable to fire, and to be used in connection with a water-pipe having a shut-off cock: in a basement of the building, adapted to be operated by hand or by any automatic mechanism adapted for the purpose, the object being to deluge all parts of the room at once.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a front elevation of the device in connection with its valve and distributer and seat and the supporting-frame with the valve closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the valve and distributer open. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the valve and its supporting device detached.

Instead of the automatically-detachable supports for the valve, with easily-fusible solder,
shown in the said patent, I have applied to this valve a yielding support, D. This consists of a pair of spring-arms, d, with intermediate upper connections with the lower face of the valve, and with the lower ends slightly turned outward and adapted to grip and rest upon the cross-bar 11. Preferably I make the arms d d of one piece of spring metal, as represented in Fig. 3. The bar I) is shown with concave sides and with a thinner upper edge, and when the valve is in place, as shown in Fig. 1. the lower ends of the spring-arn1 rest upon the side of the barb and sustain the valve. The spring-arms are of sufficient strength to sustain the valve when there is no water in the pipe to press thereon; but when the water is turned on the springarms yield and spread and allow the valve to drop, as shown in Fig. 2, it being in that figure in position to spray and diffuse the stream.
The yielding standard or support may be greatly modified in form without material change in function.
I am aware of the patent granted Harris, September 5, 1882, which has spring-arms soldered by fusible solder to the supportingstandard, and I do not herein claim any such thing.
I claim as my invention- 1. In combination with a valve and distributer and its seat and the frame connected thereto, spring-arms adapted to maintain the valve in a closed position when not under pressure, and to yield and open the valve when the water is turned on, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the valve, the seat and its supporting-frame, and the spring-arms cl d, adapted to grip the crossbar b, all substantially as described.
