UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
DAVID CONOVER, OF MOUNT VERNON, INDIANA.'
oi-IURN.y
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,767, dated April 27, 1886. Application filed December 4, 1885. Serial No. 184,656. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAvrD CoNovnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Vernon, inthe county of Posey and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in churns, and is an improvement upon the churn upon which Letters Patent were granted me, No. 325,238, September 1, 1885, and has for its objects, first, to hold the body of the churn moreV rmly in the frame which supports it and the driving-crank; secondly, to prevent the lid from turning in the body of the churn While the operation of churning is in progress; thirdly,to enable the operator to examine the contents of the churn while in' motion. These objects are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 is an elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan of the top of the churn with the operating mechanism removed. Fig. 3 is a sectional view. Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of the top oi' the churn, and shows (Where a portion of the pieces forming the cover are broken away) the position of the lugs L.
The letter A indicates the stand or frame upon which the churn is placed, which is provided with short legs a, preferably three in number, as this gives greater steadiness where the iloor or ground upon which the churn is placed happens to be uneven. Secured to the stand A is a vertical piece of wood, A', provided with a brace, A, whereby greater steadinessi between the stand A and vertical piece A is secured.
The vertical piece A has au opening near the top for the passage of one end of a hollow casting, B, having a ilange, I), provided with suitable bolt-holes and bolts, whereby the easting B may be firmly secured to the upright A. This casting forms the bearing of the shaft c of spur-wheel C. The said shaft is provided with crank and handle I), by means of which rotar-y motion is given to the spur-wheel C, thence to the pinion E and spur-wheels F G, as well as to their respective dashers H I, the
maintainedin their proper positions.
Secured to each side of the churn-body are lugs L, made, preferably, of thin sheet metal,
which enter the space between the parts J J forming the lid of the churn. These lugs L are intended to maintain the body of the churn and the lid in theirexact rela-tive positions by preventing the one from turning upon the other, and if madeof thin sheet metal theyV occupy but little room, and thereforev do not necessitate cutting away any portion of the pieces J J To the part of the lid Jis secured by means of hinges 7c apiece, K', thereby forming a do0r,which may belifted lby the operator while churning for the purpose of observing the progress of the Work.
Near the top of the churn-body is attached to the upright A a crescent-shaped piece of wood or metal, M, having a small central slot or opening, m, to receive thelug n on the outside of the ch'urnbody, whereby the churnbody is prevented from turning upon its axis during the operation of churning.
A leather band or strap, R, is passed around the churn-body near the top, and around the upright A. This is intended to prevent the churn from slipping off the stand A, and to hold the whole together while churning, which may be quickly removed and adjusted, as cir cumstances require.
The dashers are of wood, and have a number of perforations, h. At the bottom they have pins P,which enter small metal thimbles o, secured to the bottom of the churn-body.
It will be observed from the foregoing that when the handle l) is turned a revolving motion in opposite directions will be imparted to the dashers H I, and cause a great agitation to the contents of the churn, so that the operation of making butter is very rapidly performed.
Having described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim is* 1. In combination with the body of the churn, having lugs L,a cover consisting of two pieces, J J', and a raised portion, K, the said parts J J provided with hooks z' and staples ICC fi', and a hinged door, K', as deserbed, und for In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the purposes set forth. 4 presence of two Witnesses.
2. In combination with the Vertical piece T 3 A', the crescent-shaped piece M, having slot DAVID COA OVEL" 5 fm, the strap R, and the churn-body having a W'itnesses:
lug, n, as described, and for the purposes set JAMES L. GABORN, forth.
CHARLES M. SPENCER.
