i2@ fluff l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY ADDISON ROBINSON, OF FOXOROFT, MAINE.
TRICYCLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,617, dated April 27, 1886.
Application filed May 13, 1885.
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A DDIsoN ROB' INson, of Foxcroft, in the county of Piscataquis, of the State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tricycles; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a perspective view of a trioycle provided with my invention, the nature of which is defined in the claims hereinafter presented. Fig. 2 is a top view, and Fig. 3 a side elevation, ofthe arm employed in carrying out my improvement.
In using a tricycle, especially of the kind usually termed the Columbia tricycle, a perspective View of which is shown in Fig. l, there is experienced by the rider a very annoying jar and trembling of the handle of the mechanism for steering the machine, such being caused by the steering-wheel in its passage over irregularities in the surface of a road. This tremblingA or unsteadiness of the steering-wheel while the tricycle is in use is communicated through the wheelsupporter, the steering-arm, and thence by the tillerlrod to the steeringhandle. As a remedy for such trembling of the said handle, which, besides the annoyance created by it to the rider, is liable in time to injuriously affect the nerves of his hand and arm, the handle` rod has been provided with an auxiliary supporting-arm to extend from the main horizontal shaft or bar, which is over and parallel with the axle. and incline forward and upward, such arm at its front end clasping or encircling the said rod close to the handle thereof. In practice such arm has been a complete remedy for the aforesaid evil. Prior to my invention this arm has been integral with the ordinary lower supporting-arm, the two being the prongs of a fork. This makes the auxiliary arm a part of the structure of the tricycle, and specially belonging to it.
Serial No. 165,380.
Such
(No model.)
construction does notpermit the arm to be applied to any kind of tricycle. I make this auxiliary supporting-arm as a device which can be slipped onto any kind of tricycle, as.
there are only two points of adjustment. It can be slipped off if not wanted, and is a separable attachment to a tricycle. I usually line or bush with leather or some other proper soft material the arm-bearing through which the rod extends. The said arm I usually make of steel, it being provided at its rear end with a tubular eye, a, to receive the shaft, and at its front end with another such eye, b', to receive the handlerod, all being as represented in the drawings, in which- A A are the larger wheels, and B the steering-wheel, of a tricycle; O, the axle; D, the shaft or bar over such axle; E, the steeringmechanism handle, and a the rod to which such handle is aixed. This rod, pivoted at its lower end, is supported by an arm, b, extending horizontally, or thereabout, from the said shaft, the rod going through such arm. Over the said arm,and projecting forward and upward, as shown, is the supplementary arm G, which rises from and is fastened to the shaft and extends nearly if not quite upto the handle, which necessarily has to be some distance, as shown, above the main arm.
l. As an attachmentfor a tricycle, the supplemental steeringrod-supporting arm O, having the eyes a b', as set forth.
2. In a tricycle, the combination of the bar D, the-steeringrod a, the ordinary steeringrod-supporting arm b, and the supplemental HENRY ADDISON ROBINSON.
Vitnesses:
LEONAND H. ROBINSON, WVALLACE W. CRooKER.
It is hereby oertied that in Letters Patent No. 340,617 granted April 27, 1886, upon the application oi Henry Addison Robinson, of Foxoroft, Maine, for an improvement in Trioyoles, errors appear requiring the following corrections, Viz: In line 77, page 1, of the printed specification, the reference letter C should read G; and in figure 1 of the drawing the steering rodsupporting` arm, to Which reference is made in claim 2, should be lettered b and that the Letters Patent should be read with these corrections therein to make it conform to the record of the oase in the Patent Office.
Signed, countersigned, and sealed this 18th day of May, A. D. 1886.
[SEAL] H. L. MULDROW, Acting Secretary of the Interior. Conntersigned M. V. MONTGOMERY,
Commissioner of Patents.
