JOHN S. EBERHART, OF LAPORTE CITY, IOYVA.
COMBINED CHIMNEY AND VENTILAT'OR.
EJPEGIEICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,299, dated April 20, 1886.
Application filed February 24, 1886. Serial No. 198,023.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. EBERHARI, of Laporte City, in the county of Black Hawk and State of Iowa, have invented a new'and improved Combined Chimney and Ventilator, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to the construction of a combined chimney and ventilator, the obro j ect of the invention being to provides. strong,
light, and perfectly-safe chimney, so arranged that the parts are in position to constitute a ventilating attachment for the apartment into which the chimney extends.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying d rawings, forminga part of this specificatiomin which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my improved chimney and ventilator. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with the cap removed, and Fig. 3 is a view of the lower end of the device.
In constructing such a chimney and ventilator as is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, I provide a central fine or chimney proper, such as that shown at A, which is upheld by an exterior casing, B, that is provided with a foot-plate, 0, arranged to be secured to the roof of the building in which the chimney is located. This foot plate 0 extends inward toward the flue A, but does not touch said flue, there being connected to the inner vertical flanges of the plate an incasing pipe or tube, D, which extends downward and within the apartment where the stove is located. The bottom of the fine A is closed by a perforated ring, K, and a soot-box, E, that is held in position by a clasp, k, as best shown in Figs. 1 and 3, while above the flue there is arranged a conical cap, F, which is provided with a collar, a, to which it is connected by arms b b, the collar a being arranged to fit snugly within the upper end of the flue. 5
(No model.)
The casing B is rectangular, and the top of this casing is pyramidical, as best shown in Fig. 2.
From this construction it will be seen that there is a continuous air-space reaching from the lower to the upper end of the flue A, and this space acts as an outlet for the vitiated air of the apartment, which finds an escape through the openings 2' t of the casing B, and this current of air, besides ventilating the apartment, prevents any excessive heating of the casing B or the inclosing-tube D. The stove-pipeis inserted through the hole N. As all parts of the chimney are riveted together, it is very easily put up, the services of a skilled mechanic not being required. 7
Such a chimney as has been described is very easily cleaned, and as its entire weight is supported from the roof it may be placed in any position desired, and on account of its perfect ventilating qualities its usefulness from a sanitary point of view is beyond question.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A combined chimney and ventilator consisting of the flue A, having a soot-box, E, in its lower end, and a pipe-opening, N, near said lower end, the casing B, surrounding the upper part of the flue, contracted at its upper end to fit said flue, and provided with the openings z, the foot-plate O, secured to the lower edge of the casing B and projecting inward a short distance toward the flue A,the inclosing-tube D around the lowerhalf of the flue and secured at its upper end to the inner edge of the plate 0, the cap F, having the arms b, and the ring a, connecting the lower ends of the said arms and fitting snugly in the upper end of the flue A, substantially as set forth.
