I NITED "STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE WILSON MOEWEN, OF MILTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,139, dated April 20, 1886.
Application filed February 19, 1886. Serial No. 192,555. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I; GEORGE WILsoN MOEWEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milton, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in fence-posts; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of parts, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views.
The post is constructed of three or more separable parts, A, B, and O, which are made of earthenware and baked, but may be made of any other preferred material. The part A forms the lower or base section, and is provided on its upper end with a vertical opening or recess, a. Into the sides of this recess are inserted the lower ends of parallel metallic vertical securing standards or plates D,which are of suitable length, and are provided above the baseAwith transverse aligned openings (1. The opening a in the top of the base A is filled with cement, which is compressed between the opposing sides of the lower ends of the standards D, and when it hardens firmly secures the said standards to the base. The sections B and Gare likewise formed of earthenware, andbaked, and provided on opposite sides with grooves or recesses b and 0, adapted to receive the standards D, and in which the said standards fit, as shown. Transverse bolts F pass through the openings cl in the standards and through corresponding aligned openings in the sections B and O, and the said bolts are provided with clamping nuts f, which are screwed onto their threaded ends, and thus serve to secure the standards firmly to the separable sections, and thus construct a post of great strength and durability.
The ends of the bolts F are provided with hooks or catches f, for engaging with the wires or longitudinal rails composing the fence.
A fence-post thus constructed is cheap and simple, and is practically indestructible by the action of the elements.
If desired, the upper sections, B C, may be combined in one.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The fence-post comprising the base A, having the recess a in its upper end, the vertical standards D, having their lower ends inserted in opposite sides of the recess in said base and secured therein by cement, and the upper section, having the vertical grooves on opposite sides to receive the standards D, and secured between the said standards by means substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE WILSON MeEWEN.
