SPINNING-MACHINE.
EPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,981, dated April 13, 1886.
Application filed February 13, 1886. Serial No. 191,889. (N'o model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILDER M. FOX, of Upper Stillwater, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spinning Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine,
Fig. 2 is asimilar view with the frame in position. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on line 00 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar section on line yy, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail plan view of the frame G. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the machine, showing the operation of spinning, and with the spoolframe removed. Fig. 7 is a plan view showing the operation of winding both threads on one spool. Fig. 8 isa plan view showing the operation of twisting the threads.
This invention relates to domestic spinningmachines, and is designed to replace the ordinary spinning-wheel; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,A designates the frame of the machine, in shape preferably like that of a sewing-machine, and A is a treadle secured to a shaft, (1, journaled in said frame.
B is a cord-wheel or large pulley, the shaft of which is journaled in the side of the frame. The wheel B is rotated by the oscillations of the treadle by means of the pit-man b and wristpin 1).
O is the spindle-block,having the two spindles c c journaled in it, as shown, the said spindles being respectively provided with the pulley-blocks c 0 between their bearings.
D D are standards rising from the block 0, midway between the bearings of the spindles c c and having at their upper ends the bear ings (Z (Z, for the journals of either of the spools E E. One of the flanges e of each spool is grooved so as to convert it into a pulley for a cord, F, which runs through said groove and through grooves e e in the pulley-blocks 0" c so that the rotation of said blocks will rotate the spool.
f is a cord which passes through a slot in the frame around the pulley B and over the pulley-blocks in grooves f f made therein. The rotation of the pulley B, caused by the motion of the treadle, will consequently cause both pulley-blocks to rotate in the same direction. The spools will also rotate in the same direction.
G is a frame attached to an upright support or plate, which has a dovetailed lower edge, 9, adapted to slide in corresponding ways, 9", secured to the plate of the main frame at the end opposite that upon which the spindle-block is attached. The frame G is provided with two sets of similar bearings, H, designed to accommodate the spools EE when removed from the bearings d cl.
h h are guide-loops on the frame intended to be used when doubling the thread on the spools, and li'h aresilnilarguideloops designed to be used when twisting thread.
I is a standard rising from the main frame on one side of the spindle-block, and having on its top aguide-loop,'2 designed to be used when doubling the thread on the spools.
The mode of operation is as follows: The plate g is slid off the frame and the thread is spun in the usual manner except that both spindles are filled. A spool, E, is then placed in the bearings (Z (Z, the plate put in place, the thread from each spindle passed through its proper guideloop h, and through the guide loop hand both threads attached to thespool. The machine is then started and both threads wound on the spool. The spool E is then re placed by the spool E, the'plate 9 again removed, and the spindles again filled with thread. The plate 9 is then repla'ied and the thread of both spindles wound on the spool E in the described manner. Each spool E E is then placed upon one of the sets of bearings H H of the frame G,the double threads from each passed through its proper guide-loop h h and attached to its proper spindle, themachineset in motion, and the threads twisted in the usual 'manner.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. The combination of the spindle-block having two spindles journaled thereon and pro- ICO vided with bearings-on standards midway between the bearings of the spindles, the" two si milar spools, each adapted to rest in said'beari'ngs and each having one end flange converted into a pulley or cord wheel, the cord or band adapted to pass over said flange and over pulley-blocks on thespindles, and mechanism, substantially as described, whereby the spindles and attached pulley-blocks are rotated in one direction, substantially'as specified.
2. The combination of thespindle-block,the two spindles journaled therein, the spools, each having one flange converted into a pulley and adapted to rest in the bearings securedto the spindle-blocl ,the pulleys on the spindle,
the frame attached to the removable plate and provided with guide-loops for the threads, the guide-loop at one side of the spindle-block,and mechanism, substantially as described, for operating the machine.
3. The combination ofthe spindle-hlock,t-he two spindles journaled therein. mechanism,
substantially as described, to rotate said spindles and either of two similar removable spools simultaneously, the removable plate and the frame attached thereto, and provided with bearings adapted to receive the journals of the removable spools, and with guide-loopsh', toguide the thread from the spools to the spindles, substantially as specified.
4. The combination of the main frame A, treadle A, pulley B, provided with the wristpin b, pitman b, block 0, spindles c 0', attached thereto, spools E E, frame G, provided with bearings H for the spools, and guide-loops h h for the thread. removable plate and standard I, provided with the guideloop i,all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my 'own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
