(Cl. 29-203) ABSTRACT F THE DISCLOSURE A mechanical advantage jack tip inserting tool in which a first lever has a fixed anvil on one surface and a reciprocable anvil on another and opposed surface for inserting a jack tip into a bore of a board by a second lever that is pivotably connected to the first lever.
In the missile industry, there is a constant need for all types of new test equipment, and this test equipment to a great extent consists of many and varied types of electronic equipment that is initially made or put together by hand. In this equipment, lots of jack tips have to be used; therefore, there is a dire need for a manually operable tool that will enable one to easily and accurately insert jack tips into a support board.
With this need in mind, it is an object of this invention to provide an inserting tool for inserting a jack tip into a support board.
Another object of this invention is -to provide a jack tip inserting tool that accurately inserts a jack tip into a support board such as by accurately guiding the jack tip.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a jack tip inserting tool that can be used for inserting jack tips into support boards of various sizes and shapes.
A further object of this invention is to provide a jack tip inserting tool that can insert jack tips of various sizes and shapes.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a jack tip inserting tool that is relatively simple, yet versatile and is relatively cheap to build.
In accordance with this invention, a jack tip inserting tool is provided that includes a pair of levers that are pivotably mounted relative to each other to provide hand grasping means at one end of the levers and work means at the other end of the levers. At the hand grasping end of 4the levers, the levers are biased apart by a spring, and at the work end of the levers, one of the levers includes anvil means that has one :lixed anvil surface and one movable anvil surface, and the other lever has a cam thereon that coacts with a cam surface on the structure that has the movable anvil surface to actuate the movable anvil surface toward the iixed anvil surface when suicient force is applied to the hand grasping means.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the same:
FIGURE l is a sectional view which illustrates a jack tip inserting tool, a jack tip, and a support board, all of which are in position for insertion of the jack tip;
FIGURE 2 is a sectional view of the same structures as shown in FIGURE 1, but illustrating the structures in an inserted position; and
FIGURE 3 is a sectional view along line 3--3 of FIG- URE l.
The invention may be better understand by referring to the drawing in which, a jack tip inserting tool 1 is illustrated. Tool 1 has a cam lever 3 and an anvil lever 5 that is hollowed out at 7 to receive one end of cam lever 3. Conventional securing means such as a bolt 9 is mounted 3,398,445 Patented Aug. 27, 1968 ICC in a bore through each of levers 3 and 5 to pivotably mount the levers relative to each other.
Anvil lever 5 has anvil means at one end that includes a fixed anvil 25 with a generally U-shaped cut-out portion 27 and a movable anvil 29 that is reciprocally mounted in portion 31 that is spaced from fixed anvil 25 and substantially parallel thereto. Movable anvil 29 is reciprocally mounted relative to portion 31 by stepped bore 33 through portion 31, by a bushing or bushings 35 in stepped bore 33 and by movable anvil 29 being stepped so as to be receivable in bushing 35. Movable anvil 29 has a cut-out opening 37 therethrough and includes curved or arcuate surface 39 for coaction with curved surface 17 of actuating cam 11, and one end of movable anvil 29 has a pilot member 41 removably mounted in bore 43 thereof by set screw 45. The opposite end of anvil lever 5 terminates in a handle portion 47 and also includes a projecting stop 49 for co-action with stop 21 and a spring guide 51 that is opposite spring guide 23. Spring 53 is received at 0pposite ends around spring guides 23 and 51 to bias handle portions 19 and 47 apart and thereby actuate movable anvil 29 away from fixed anvil 25.
Fixed anvil 25 is adapted to support a board or support member 55 on at surface thereof for press fitting of jack tip 57 into bore 59 of board 55. Each jack tip includes a cup-shaped electrical connector 61 to which pigtail 63 is attached and about which Teflon body portion 65 is formed.
In making this device, it has been found desirable to make levers 3 and 5 from aluminum and to make actuating cam 11, movable anvil 29 and bushing 35 from heat treated steel to provide a quality device that works well.
In operation, when it is desired to mount a jack tip or tips in board 55, board 55 is placed on xed anvil 25 with bore 59 thereof over U-shaped opening 27. Jack tip 57 is next positioned relative to bore 59 with pigtail 63 through bore 59 as illustrated in FIGURE 1. With board 55 positioned relative to anvil 25 and jack tip 57 relative to board 55, force is applied at handle portions 19, 47 to move movable anvil 29 and pilot member 41 toward jack tip 57 to initially insert pilot member 41 into electrical connector 61 for proper alignment and guidance of jack tip 57 relative to board 55. As additional force is applied at handle portions 19 and 47, jack tip 57 is accurately guided and pressed into bore 59 of board 55 as illustrated in FIGURE 2. With jack tip 57 now mounted in board 55, handles 19 and 47 are released, and spring 53 causes movable anvil 29 to move away from fixed anvil 25 and allows pilot member 41 to be disengaged from electrical connector 61.
It should also be obvious that if it is desired to remove jack tip 57 from board 55, this can be accomplished, for example, by removing pilot member 41, turning board 55 and pilot member 57 over, inserting pigtail 63 into bore 43 and applying sufficient force at handle portions 19 and 47 to force jack tip 57 back through bore 59.
It is to be understood that the form of our invention, herewith shown and described, is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of par-ts may be resorted to, Without departing from the spirit of our invention, or the scope of the subjoined claims.
We claim:
1. An inserting tool for inserting jack tips and including:
a pair of levers; means mounting said levers for pivotable movement relative to each other and so as to have a mechanical advantage at one end of said levers; one of said levers having anvil means at the end opposite said one end and including a fixed anvil for providing support to a work piece when placed thereon, and a reciprocally mounted movable anvil in another portion of said one of said levers for movement toward and away from said xed anvil, said another portion having a stepped bore therethrough with bushing means mounted in said stepped bore and with said movable anvil reciprocally mounted in said bushing means; and mechanical movement means interconnecting the other lever, at the end thereof opposite said one end, to said movable anvil for moving said movable anvil toward and away from .said fixed anvil.
2. An inserting tool as set forth in claim 1, wherein said mechanical movement means includes cam lever means.
3. An inserting tool as set forth in claim 1, wherein said movable anvil has a bore therein at the end thereof facing said fixed anvil and a pilot member mounted in said bore, and wherein said fixed anvil has a iiat surface facing said movable anvil and a cut-out portion in said fixed anvil that extends inwardly from an edge of said fixed anvil in a direction that is parallel to said flat surface.

An inserting tool as set forth in claim 1, wherein stop means is provided at said one end of said levers for limiting movement of said one end of said levers toward each other to thereby limit movement of said movable anvil toward said fixed anvil, and wherein spring means is provided and mounted relative to said levers so as to bias said levers away from each other at said one end of said levers.

An inserting tool as set forth in claim 1, wherein said mechanical movement means includes an opening through said movable anvil with a surface of said opening having a shape which is curved as a segment of a circle and an actuating cam secured to said other lever, said actuating cam having a curved surface for coacting with said surface of said opening.
6. An inserting tool as set forth in claim 5, wherein said levers are made from aluminum and said bushing, said movable anvil and said actuating cam are made from heat treated steel to provide an inserting tool that works well.
7. An inserting tool as set forth in claim 5, wherein said movable anvil has a bore therein at the end which faces said fixed anvil and a pilot member removably mounted in said bore so that one end of said pilot member can be inserted into a connector portion of a jack tip to support and guide said jack tip, and wherein said xed anvil has a at surface facing said movable anvil and a removed portion that extends from and perpendicular to said flat surface so as to adapt said xed anvil to support a board thereon and have the jack tip forced through a bore in the board to mount the jack tip in the board.
8. An inserting tool as set forth in claim 7, wherein a projecting stop is provided on each of said levers at said one end and in facing relationship to limit movement of said one end of said levers toward each other.
9. An inserting tool as set forth in claim 8, wherein each of said levers has a spring guide that is located between said projecting stop thereon and said mounting means and a spring mounted relative to said spring guide on each of said levers so as to bias said levers apart at -said one end.
