Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
E. J. HALL, OF HIGHGATE, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND O. P. STIMETS, OF SAME PLACE.
IM PROVED SPRING-CASTER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,974, dated December 17, 1861.
To a/ZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known thatI, E. J. HALL, of Highgate, Franklin county, Vermont, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spring- .Castersg andI do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement and combination of double spiral springs, circular adjustable plates, and guiderods with the screw-shaft roller.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its operation and construction.
A represents the roller; B, the roller-box; C, the upright screw fastened permanently7 to the box B, the box operating as the head of the screw.
D is a circular plate, which is usually fastened to the bottom of feet of bedsteads or chairs. To this plate D, I have a double spiral spring E and three guide-rods G permanently fastened to a circular plate H above, while the guide-rods G pass through the plate H and are permanently fastened to a third plate I at top. The plate H operates as a nut on the screw C, by which t-he rollerA is adjusted and regulated to a perfectlevel with the other feet, raised or lowered, as required, the bedstead or chair thus resting on a perfect level with the floor. The weight of the bedstead or chair then rests equally on all the springs, and any pressure upon or motion of the bedstead or chair is free from jarring, and perfect ease and comfort is given to the person at rest, the springs and circular plates adjusting themselves to the weight or pressure ou the chair.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination and arrangement, with an ordinary caster, of the screw-shaft C, the spiral springs E, adjustable plat-es H and I, guide-ro`ds G, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
E. J. HALL.
