(Cl. 94-50) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A soil-packing roller characterized in that guide installations are provided on both longitudinal sides of the roller bodies to serve for guiding the roller along a surface which is substantially perpendicular to the surface to be worked.
The invention concerns a roller for the packing down of soil through which the soil material that has been put into ditches or other depressions can be compacted.
The known vibrating rollers have proved to be inadequate in that they cannot be used for the compacting of the loosely deposited fill in narrow ditches if for no other reason than because they are almost always wider than the ditches. The selection of narrower bands or roller bodies does not make it possible to operate the known rollers in a ditch since rollers have protruding driving elements on both or on one side and since they would knock against the wall of the ditch, which in most cases is not smooth. Moreover, only a part of the ditch surface would be compacted by such a device. The guiding of this roller would be, moreover, more ditficult since an operator would be unable to move in narrow ditches and therefore would be unable to control the roller in the customary manner. The plate vibrators, which are used now for compacting, have, among others, the disadvantage that they have a small capacity for rising, and for that reason, they frequently become stuck in ditches because of the rather uneven fill.
The present invention is based on the idea of developing a soil-packing roller which can be readily used in narrow spaces and can be operated from a remote position located higher than the roller, i.e., outside of the ditch, or can be controlled in the forward and reverse direction and will govern itself at the same time along vertical walls.
For the solution of the above problems, the invention generally comprises a soil-packing roller characterized in that, on both sides of the roller body, guide installations are provided which serve to guide the roller along a surface which is approximately perpendicular to the surface that is to be worked. The guiding installations can be developed as planks which, for example, can be manufactured from sectional steel. The guiding installations will preferably be longer than the length of the ditch roller in its direction of movement. It is also possible to provide a number of rollers as a guiding means along both sides of the ditch roller with the guide rollers lying in a straight line or in a slightly curved line. These guide rollers can be arranged by themselves or in addition to the planklike elements, preferably by having the rollers arranged on the ends thereof. In order to avoid the knocking against an obstacle, the ends of the guide planks converge at the front end and at the rear end of the roller in relation to their middle longitudinal plane.
Since the ditch roller, generally speaking, has a relatively small width, a low position of the center of gravity is desirable. For that reason the transmission system of 3,393,616 Patented July 23, 1968 lge the invention has been arranged below the driving motor between the roller bodies.
In order to facilitate the remote operation of the ditch roller by the operator from a point outside of the ditch, a so-called pneumatic squeeze bulb is provided through which the driving is started or its r.p.m. regulated, and if need be, even the travel direction of the ditch roller is changed. In order to keep the ditch roller as narrow as possible, recesses are provided in the side elements of its frame in which the transmitting elements of the drive, for example, gears are housed.
The means for accomplishing the foregoing objects and other advantages, which will be apparent to those skilled in the art, are set forth in the following specification and claims and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings dealing with a basic embodiment of the present invention. Reference is made now to the drawings in which:
FIGS. 1 and 2 show schematically a plan view of the inventive ditch roller positioned in a ditch;
FIG. 3 shows a side view of the inventive ditch roller; and
FIG. 4 shows a cross section through the ditch with an end view of the inventive ditch roller.
The ditch roller is generally noted by reference numeral 1. Guide planks 2 are mounted on each side and are parallel to the direction of travel of the roller.
Instead of or in addition to the guide planks 2, rollers 9 can be provided. The rollers 9 preferably protrude outward beyond the surfaces of the guide plank-s in the direction of the wall of the ditch. The rollers may be conveniently mounted on the guide planks 2. The main roller bodies 3 and 4 are mounted in the frame 5. A driving motor 6, with auxiliary devices pertinent to it, is mounted above the frame between the main rollers. The gearing means 7 is placed below the driving motor 6 and between the main roller bodies 3 and 4 in order to obtain a center of gravity which is as low as possible.
In order to keep the width of the ditch roller as small as possible, recesses are provided in the lateral carriers of the frame (not shown in the drawings), which serve for the housing of the transmission elements of the drive means, namely, the gears. The pneumatic squeeze-bulb and hose attachment are shown generally and noted by reference number 8.
If need be, the frame of the inventive roller can be designed with the lateral parts similar to the guide planks 2 and serving as both the guiding devices and the gear housing. Rollers also may be provided with the frame parts for guiding the roller in the same manner as with a plank-like manner.
The frame parts may be prolonged in both directions beyond the rollers 3 and 4 with the ends inwardly turned so that the frame parts together with their prolongations-viewed from abovewould be similar to the plank-like parts 2 shown in FIGS. 1 and 2.
The development of the frame parts as guiding devices is taken into consideration Whenever driving units are available, namely, the motor and gearing, which in their assembled condition, are no broader or hardly broader than the rollers 3 and 4.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential characteristics thereof. The present embodiment is therefore to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than the foregoing description, and all changes which come within the meaning and range of equivalency of the claims are therefore to be embraced therein.
What is claimed is:
1. A soil-packing roller in which conventional steering means is obviated comprising a frame, at least one :roller body mounted in said frame, guide means mounted on said frame on both sides of said roller body, said guide means serving to guide the roller along a surface which is substantially perpendicular to the surface to be worked, said guide means comprising plank-like guiding installations which are somewhat longer than the measurements of said roller in its direction of movement, the ends of said guide means converging in the direction of the center of the roller with respect to their middle longitudinal plane, and a driving motor and transmission means mounted on said frame and operatively connected to drive said roller body.
2. A roller according to claim 1 in which a roller means is arranged laterally on said guide means and protrudes somewhat beyond the plane of said guide means transversely to the direction of movement of the roller.
3. A roller according to claim 1 further comprising a remote control means for controlling said driving motor and transmission means.
4. A roller according toclaim 1 in which recesses are provided in lateral frame parts of the roller, said transmission means being hou-sed in said recesses.
5. A roller according to claim 4 in which parts of the frame serve as both said guide means and as said housing recesses.
6. A roller according to claim 1 in which there are at least two roller bodies and said driving motor is disposed on said frame above and between said roller bodies.
7. A roller according to claim 6 in which said transmission means is arranged -below the driving motor and between the roller bodies.
