Description
June 25, 1968 A. w. SLAYDEN UNDERSHORTS CONSTRUCTION FOR MEN Filed Oct. 24, 1965 United States Patent 3,389,701 UNDERSHORTS CONSTRUCTION FOR MEN Alvin W. Slayden, 3905 Morrison St. NW., Washington, D.C. 20015 Filed Oct. 24, 1965, Ser. No. 504,950 4 Claims. (Cl. 128-159) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE one other point spaced diagonally upwardly from said first point.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in mens garments and particularly to a suspensory support as applied to a bifurcated garment referred to as mens undershorts.
It is a primary object of this invention to provide a comfortable, simple, efficient and easily manufactured suspensory support readily attachable to loose fitting or Boxer type mens undershorts.
It is another object of this invention to provide a suspensory support of this character that may be worn as an independent support.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a suspensory support of this character that is non-compressive and well ventilated.
Various attempts have been made in the past to incorporate a suspensory construction in conventional styles of mens undershorts but none have been entirely successful. The Brief type shorts and similarly functioning panel inserts in Boxer type shorts partially depend upon the action of the athletic supporter and result only in compressing the male organs to the body, becoming uncomfortable in hot weather and particularly so when seated. Prior panel and pocket type supports in Boxer shorts have been attached to a front portion of the shorts and obtain their supporting action from the garment in a vertical line. Normal body actions such as bending to sit down or stand up varies the support tension from an uncomfortable cutting condition to .a looseness that frequently results in dislodgement.
I have overcome these disadvantages by providing a support that receives its principal supporting action along the natural joint line between the leg and body of the wearer and thus is relatively unaffected by normal body actions. When standing the male organs depend naturally and when seated they are supported in a comfortable manner.
These, and other objects and advantages of this invention will become more apparent from the following descripition and claims when considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a front perspective view of a bifurcated undergarment, referred to hereafter as undershorts, showing the support panel of the invention incorporated therein;
FIG. 2 is an inside partial view thereof in a single plane showing the proper relationship of the parts; and
FIG. 3 is an inside view of the embodiment constituting a supporting device to be worn independently of the undershorts.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, indicates 3,389,701 Patented June 25, 1968 ice generally a mens undershorts of conventional design including front portion 11 and 12 centrally divided by a fiy opening 13, back portion 14, waistband 15 and leg encircling portions 16 and 17 joined by the crotch seam 18.
The suspensory support panel of the invention, designated 20, is mounted in one side of the undershorts. Panel is generally triangular in shape having edges 21, 22 and 23 and apexes 24, and 26. Apex 24 is positioned approximately on the front part of crotch seam 18 at an appropriate point near the lower end of fly opening 13 and panel 20 is then seamed to leg 16 along the edge 22. Seamed edge 22 extends generally downwardly in leg 16 and is relatively inconspicuous from the front side of the undershorts. Apex 26 is then secured to the side portion of the waistband 15 at an appropriate point so that the edge 21 will extend generally along the natural joint line between the leg and body of a person wearing the under shorts. When positioned correctly the apex 26 will normally be attached intermediate of the front portion 11 and rear portion 14.
Support tension along edge 21 remains relatively unaffected by the normal bending of the body, even when the fiy edges between front portions 11 and 12 tend to loosen and buckle when the wearer of the undershorts sits down. When seated edge 23 is tensioned slightly by the changed angle to the wearers leg and provides a comfortable supporting action.
Although unnecessary for effective functioning of the support panel, edge 23 may be partially or entirely seamed to the undershorts. Likewise, edge 21 may be seamed part way from apex 26, leaving a sufficient space for introduction of the male organs. When edge 21 is part way seamed the lowest point of the seam becomes in effect the attachment point to front portion 11. This attachment point continues, however, to lie in the above mentioned natural joint line and functional action of the support panel is not altered.
FIG. 3 shows the suspensory support designed to be worn independently of a garment. Its parts and functioning are essentially the same in this embodiment as when attached to undershorts and parts are designated by numerals with prime marks to indicate equivalent parts with the same functional action as described above. The outer panel 11' is attached to waistband 15' and the inner panel 20 having sides 21, 22' and 23' and apexes 24', 25 and 26' is attached to this outer panel 11 in :a similar manner and with the same considerations as described and explained above. It is obvious in this instance that panel 11' and 20 could be a single piece of material with the edge 23 being merely a fold line.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it should be understood that such changes are within the spirit and scope of the present invention as described and claimed herein.
Having thus set forth and disclosed the nature of my invention, what is claimed is:
1. A suspensory support for men comprising, in combination: mens bifurcated undershorts characterized by a front portion having a centrally positioned fly opening therein, a back portion, and a body encircling waistband secured to the upper edges of said front and back portions, the front and back portions being joined at their lower edges intermediate of their side edges by a crotch portion to define two leg portions; and a suspensory panel for male organs applied to the inside of one leg and front portions by an attaching searn extending from a point at the front of the crotch portion adjacent the lower end of the fly opening downwardly a substantial distance in the front part of said one leg portion, and to at least one other point in the under-shorts .on the side of said one leg portion spaced from said front point and lying generally along a line between said front point and a point on the waistband intermediate of the front and back portions, thereby forming a supporting surface at least generally triangular in shape in the panel for placement under the male organs.
2. A suspensory su port for men in accordance with claim 1, wherein, said one other point of attachment is spaced from said front point and positioned in the front portion to generally overlie the natural joint line between the leg and body of a person wearing the undershorts, thereby defining with said front point an upper support edge to the suspensory panel that lies generally along said natural joint line.
3. A suspensory support for men comprising, in combination: a body encircling waistband; an outer panel having its upper edge secured to the waistband and adapted to substantially cover the front portion of the body to one side of the vertical center body line of a person wearing the support; and an inner support panel for male organs applied to the inside of the outer panel by an attaching seam extending from a point overlying the front crotch region of the person downwardly a substantial distance, and to at least one other point spaced from said crotch region point and positioned to generally overlie the natural joint line between the leg and body of a person wearing the support, thereby forming a supporting surface at least generally triangular in shape in the inner panel for placement under the male organs, and the line between said crotch region point and said other point defining an upper support edge to the suspensory panel that lies generally along said natural joint line.
4. A suspensory support for men in accordance with claim 3, wherein, the inner panel is further attached to the outer panel by a seam extending diagonally upwardly from a lower point in said downwardly extending seam, thereby forming a closed pocket between the outer and inner panels.
