DUST-GUARD FOR AXLE-BOXES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,804, dated March 30, 1886.

Application filed October 16, 1885. Serial No. 180,112.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMEs TIMMs, of O- lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain Improved Packing or Dust-Guard for Oar-Axle Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a perspective View of my im- [0 proved dust guard or packing, (marked A,)

and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same.

This invention is an improvement upon that shown in my United States Patent No. 27 7 ,382, granted May 8, 1883. In that patent I show a dust-guard or packing like my present one, except that it is composed of two parts, the division being centrally upon the dotted line shown in the accompanying drawings, and the lower part of the packing being provided, as

is necessary where such a division occurs,\vith springs to keep it in place.

In the present instance I provide a dustguard composed of a single plate with a hole in its center adapted to nicely fit around the dust-collar of a car-axle. This plate is plain upon its outer side, as shown, and inclined in opposite directions on the inner side, so as to form an angle in its center, as well illustrated in the sectional View. By this angular con- 0 struction the packing serves to wipe the oil inward upon the axle, as explained in my said patent, above and below, and cause it to drop (No model.)

down into the oil-box, and thus it is prevented from working outward and wasting. The entire packing will slide up and down in the box, following the movements of the axle with relation to the box. It operates, when made in a single piece, as in the present instance, much better as a dust-guard, because it is not liable to spread apart upon the line of division, as is the case with my said patented packing. Besides this, it is cheaper to make and apply, for the reason that springs are dispensed with for the lower half of the packing.

It will be understood that this packing is to be applied on the inside of a car-axle box around the dust-collar of the axle, and will work sub stantially in the manner of my said patented dust-guard, but with the improved results and conditions above named.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

A dust-guard or packing, A, with cut-away or inclined inner surfaces, forming a central projection or angle made of a single plate, substantially as set forth.
