ALDIS FRANKLIN BULLARD AND GEORGE ALBERT LANGMAID, OF ST. ALBANS, VERMONT.
COAL-SIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,582, dated March 23, 1886.
Application filed January 9, 1886. Serial No. 188,102.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ALDIS F. BULLARD and GEORGE A. LANGMAID, citizens of the United States, residing at St. Albans, in the county of Franklin and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal-Sifters; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a vertical sectional View of our improved coal-sifter. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same.
This invention has relation to coal-sifters; and'it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the base of the coalsifter, said base being provided with a downwardly-extending flange, B, which is wired along its lower edge to give it greater strength and durability. This base A is secured to the lower edge of the body 0 by rivets D, passed through the horizontal flange E, which is in tegral with the body 0, and extends along the rear end of the body and along the sides of the body nearly to the front edge of the same. The mouth F of the sifter is rectangular in outline in plan View, and is about seven by ten inches in area, and is provided with a hinged lid or cover, G,which is provided with a depending flange, H, along its front side and both ends. piece or knob by which to open and close it when necessary. The front wall of the mouth of the sifter is vertical for a short distance from its top down, and this vertical portion I of the front wall is provided with a handle, J, by which to carry the sifter. The remaining portion K of the front wall of the sifterbody inclines downwardly and forwardly, and projects beyond the rectangular base, the projecting portion of the body being bottomless This lid is provided with a finger- (No model) to permit the coal to escape from the sifter into the coal-box, basket, or other receptacle.
L designates the inclined screen, which is secured within the body of the sifter, and extends from the top at the rear wall of the body down to the front line of the base, which forms the front boundary of the bottomless portion of the sifter.
The front wall of the sifter is provided with a basket-hook, P, on which to hang the sheetmetal coal-basket Q or hod, to receive the sifted coal, the ashes falling into the box, barrel, or other ash-receptacle, upon which the sifter rests while the coal is being sifted.
A coal-sifter of this construction can be used in the parlor or other room of the house without creating dust in the room. The coalbasket is provided with a half-cover, Z, hinged in place, so that when the bail of the coalbasket is engaged with the basket-hook the half-cover Z may be closed, thereby preventing the escape of dust and ashes into the room at this point. A funnel, X, is used to feed the coal and ashes to the sifter.
Having described this invention, what we claim, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The improved sifter herein described, comprising the base having the downwardly-extending flange and the horizontal flange, the body 0, having the horizontal flange at its lower end and secured to the base A, and a forward bottomless extension, a basket-hook on the outer side of the extension, and a handle, J, on the straight wall above the extension, the hinged cover, the inclined sieve, and the basket having the hinged half-cover adapted to engage the said extension snugly when the handle is placed over the hook, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof we affix on r siguatu res in presence of two witnesses.
ALDIS FRANKLIN BULLARD. GEORGE ALBERT LANGMAID.
