CHARLES FREOKER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
COMPOSING-STICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,259, dated March'23, 1886. Application filed January 2, 1885. Serial No. 151,774. lMcdel.)
Tc @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLEs FRECKER, a citizen ofthe United States of America, and aresident of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oomposing-Sticks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in composing-sticks.
It has for its object to providea composingstick with an adjustable slide attached thereto in such a manner as will permit the said slide to be adjusted to any desired measure of column and at the same time retain a standard measure, as will be hereinafter explained.
The manner in which I obtain these results is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, and in which similar letters of reference indic-ate corresponding parts..
Figure l represents a plan of my improved stick, showing the adjustable block c, which is heldin position by the screw (Zand the slidepiece b, adapted to be held in position by the screw c. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the stick, showing the slots e e and screw c and d, as above described, and Fig. 3 illustrates the adjustable block c detached from the stick. Fig. 4t represents a perspective view of the slide-piece Z.
As illustrated by the drawings and model, the block c is secured to the stick by the screw d, which passes through the lower angle of the stick and through the slotted portion ofthe slide-piece b, as will be hereinafter explained. The lower angle of the stick Ais provided with two slots, e e, which may be, if desired, made into one long slot to permit a closer adjustment of the slide b, if necessary. The slideb is also provided with aslot running vertically through its center, which permits it to slide back and forth adjacent to the guide-piece o of the block a. The screw c is intended to clamp the slide-piece b when it is desired to hold it rigidly in one position, or to what may be termed a standard gage.
I have illustrated the screw c as being located behind the screw d; but I do not wish to confine myself to that particular construction, as a screw could be attached to the front end of the slide-piece b and adapted to slide through a slot located in the lower angle of the stick, as at c, Fig. 2.
The principal object of my invention is to provide the stick with an adjustable block, a, which can be adjusted to the desired standard77 and secured rigidly thereto by means of the screwd or any other desirable method,
and a slide-piece, b, adapted to slide in the usual manner, but to rest against the block c when it is slid back to the desired standard gage, the slide b having attached to it a screw or any desirable means to hold it temporarily in one locality.
Having thus described Iny invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
Acomposing-stick constructed as described and provided with the sliding pieces b and a, arranged and adapted to be adjustably secured to the lower angle of the stick A by means of the screws c and d, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimonythat I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 22d day of December, 1884.
