Description
p UNITED I STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM D. BUSH, OF FALL RIVER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED ROWLOCK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,823, dated December 3, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. BUSH, of Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in a Rowlook; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 is aperspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the socket. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the rowlock removed from the socket. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the socket.
My invention consists in a mode for securing a rowiock in a socket and securing a mat in a rowlock.
To enable others skilled in the art to maken and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In Fig. 1, A is the rowlock; B', the socket; D', aleather mat; E', the end of the shaftof the rowlock; a', a pin projecting one-eighth inch out of E', b', a screw which 'secures the mat in a recess which is cast in the rowlock, and Which is represented by F3 in Fig. 3. c c c c are holes through the cap for the purpose of securing the socket in the gnnwale.
In Fig. 2, B2 is the socket cast with the cap C2. Its bore isried with a spiral groove commencing at d and ending at cl2.
In Fig. 3, A3 is the rowlock removed from the socket. Ellis the shaft, which is made to fit the bore of the socket. F3 is a recess cast in the rowlock, in which is secured the mat shown by D, (see Fig. l.) CL3 is a pin permanently secured in E2, (See of, Fig. 1,) 0ne eighth inch diameter, and which projects oneel'ghth inch.
In Fig. 4, C4 is the cap. G4 is the bore of the socket. d* is a spiral groove cast in the bore one-eighth inch broad and one-eighth inch deep, which commences at e and ends at e4, making one revolution.
Operation: The rowlock and socket being constructed as herein specified, the socket being affixed in the gnnwale of a boat in the usual manner, the novelty and operation may be noted. By applying the rowlock A3 (see Fig. 3) to the socket B2 so that pin ai will enter the spirally-ril'led groove, (see d4 in Fig. 4,) its descent will make one revolution, pin as following the groove and' appearing when the rowlock is in its proper position, as at a in Fig. 1. By revolving the rowlock half a revolution either Way When it is in its proper position in the socket, pin a will be on the opposite side of the socket from Where the spiral groove commences and ends, and the rowlock is held in the socket by pin o. and cannot be removed from it till revolved back and pin a enters the groove at the .lower end of the socket, when it may be removed by revolving it contrary from the manner of inserting it. Then the oar is in the rowlock, it will be prevented from revolving far enough for pin a to reach the groove.
In this invention I do not claim or desire to claim any devices previously invented or patented for rowlocks; but n Vhat I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Recess F3, pin a3, and the spirally-rifled socket G4, constructed and operating as and for the purpose set forth.
