UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES E. HUN-'1, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BARBED FENCE-WIRE.
IZECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,229, dated March 16,1886.
Application filed May 8,1885. Serial No. 164,826. (No model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern.-
Barbed Fence-Wire, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved barbed fence-wire in which the barbs are held 011 a single wire as firmly and securely as they are held on twisted wires.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of. parts as hereina-fter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which a perspective View of my improved fence'wire is shown.
The plain fence-wire A is provided with the loop B, which is slightly contracted at its open end. The wire 0, having its ends pointed or beveled oif to form the barbs, is passed through the loop 13, andis wrapped one or more times around the loop, the pointed ends projecting in opposite directions. Thereby the wire 0 is held securely on the wire A as well as it is held on a twisted wire.
I am aware that a barb consisting of apiece of wire bent into the form of a figure 8, with its ends projecting in opposite directions and secured upon a bent wire, is old; and I am also aware that a barb consisting of two pieces of wire has been secured to a wire with a bend in it by wrappingsaid pieces of wire around the bend atright angles to each other, so as to interlock and securely hold them to the wire, with their ends projecting outward, and I therefore do not claim such inventions.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the wire A, provided with the loop B,having its open end contracted, of the wire 0, wrapped around the loop with its ends projecting in opposite directions and having one end projecting through the said loop, substantially as herein shown and de scribed.
