(c1. 5296) The present invention relates to molded building materials and more specifically to protective cover elements and their mounting means for covering the outer edges of the roofs of buildings and especially of fiat roofs.
It is already conventional to cover the edges of roofs by means of strip-shaped elements of different materials, such as plates of sheet metal, plastics, eternit, or the like, which are preshaped or molded and are intended to pre vent moisture from penetrating from above and from the side underneath the roofing. Such cover elements are usually made of an angular cross section and are mounted on holding brackets which, in turn, are secured to the roof by means of screws, bolts, or the like.
In the extensive use of such cover elements it has been found that their installation is rather difficult and requires considerable time. Furthermore, all of the known cover elements of this type have the disadvantage that there is no possibility of reliably securing the roofing to these elements.
The present invention consists in the provision of protective cover elements for roof edges and of suitable mounting means for such cover elements which overcome the above-mentioned disadvantages and permit the cover elements to be securely clamped to the roof edges by means of holding brackets in such a manner that no securing means are visible from the outside.
An important feature of the invention consists in bending or molding each cover element so as to provide it adjacent to the angle between the vertical facing part and the upper covering with a horizontal groove, the open side of which faces outwardly and the lower wall of which is downwardly inclined toward the outside. This groove is adapted to receive the outer edge of the uppermost roofing layer and to clamp the same Without permitting any moisture to penetrate underneath the roofing material. Another feature of the invention consists in the provision of an additional clamping element which may be inserted into the open side of the groove for clamping the edge of the outer roofing layer more securely. According to another important feature of the invention it is possible to employ the mentioned groove also as a means for clamping the cover element to a holding bracket which in turn, is secured to the roof itself.
A further feature of the invention consists in providing the cover element above the mentioned groove with a ridge-shaped crest which projects above the substantially horizontal side of the roof. This crest or ridge may be of a substantially U-shaped cross section and its side slanting downwardly toward the roof may extend substantially parallel to the upper side wall of the groove.
The central web between these parallel side Walls is preferably extended beyond one of these walls and terminates in a hookshaped end so as to permit another cover element to be fitted from above over this U-shaped part and to be secured thereto by a clamping action.
Another preferred feature of the invention consists in making the cover element of two separate parts and in bending or molding the adjacent edge portions of these two parts so as to permit the edge of the upper roofing layer to be clamped between them. The lower end of the vertical facing of the cover element is then provided with an inwardly projecting hook-s11aped part which may be 3,381,425 Patented May 7, 1968 hooked over the lower end of the holding bracket so as to clamp the cover element securely thereto.
The above-mentioned as well as numerous additional features and advantages of the present invention will become more clearly apparent from the following detailed description thereof which is to be read with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which FIGURE 1 shows a vertical section of the edge portion of a roof which is provided with a protective cover element according to the invention;
FIGURE 2 shows a similar view of a modification of the invention;

FIGURES 9a to 9f show detail views, partly in cross section, of a holding bracket; while FIGURE 10 shows the main and additional cover ele ments for a holding bracket according to FIGURES 9a to 9 In FIGURE 1 of the drawings, the roof structure comprises a concrete layer 1 which is protected at its lateral side by an insulating layer 2 and a layer of plastering 3. The concrete layer 1 is covered by an insulating layer 4 of cork or a similar material which, in turn, is covered up by roofing material which in this particular case consists of three layers 5, 6, and 7 and a cover layer or cap strip 8.
The concrete layer 1 carries at certain distances from each other a plurality of brackets 9 which are secured thereto by screws 10 and project laterally therefrom toward the outside. Each of these brackets 9 is of an angular shape and its free upright arm has holes drilled therein to permit another bracket 11 to be bolted thereto which extends substantially vertically to the roof.
Each of the protective cover elements 12 according to the invention is supported by at least one bracket 11 by being clamped thereon. According to FIGURE 1, each cover element 12 is divided into a vertical facing 12a and a lower cover strip 12b. The lateral facing 12a is drawn inwardly near its upper end and then bent over outwardly so that an outwardly open groove or rabbet 13 is formed, the lower wall of which is obliquely inclined to the outside.
The lateral facing 12:: is connected at its upper end to the lower cover strip 1212 which is substantially ridgeshaped and is also secured at its outer end by the facing support 11, while its rear end rests on the insulating layer 4. Support 11 is made of a shape in accordance with that of the facing strip 120, but it has on its upper end a projection 14 upon which the end of the cover strip 12b is hooked.
The lower cover strip 1215 has the purpose of securing the roofing material in place. According to the invention, the upper or outer layer or cover strip 8 may be inserted into the groove 13 and be clamped therein. The front edge of the roofing material is additionally clamped by a clamping member 15.
The modification of the invention as illustrated in FIGURE 2, in which the parts which are similar to those in FIGURE 1 are designated by the same reference numerals, differs from the embodiment according to FIG- URE 1 by the different shape of the adjacent edge portions of the facing strip 120 and the cover strip 12b which according to FIGURE 2 are bent in overlapping relationship so that the upper cover layer or cap strip 8 may be clamped between them. It is clearly apparent from FIGURE 2 that, even though in this case no additional clamping means are provided, the outer roofing layer or cover strip 8 will be clamped very securely. This is true especially if the facing and lower cover strips are made of a resilient material.
FIGURE So again show the bracket 9 and support 11 which, however, are in this case provided with corresponding serrations 16 to attain a better locking action on each other. In order to illustrate the particular features of the present invention more clearly, the actual roof structure is omitted in FIGURE 3a. The facing and cover element in FIGURES 3a, 3b and 30 consists of a single piece which is provided with an additional clamping member of different shapes to clamp the edge of the upper cover layer.
FIGURES 4 to 7 illustrate several modifications of the invention in which in addition to the cover element 12 a cap 17 is provided which is clamped over a further holding bracket 18.
In FIGURE 4, the roof structure is similar to that according to FIGURE 1 and again consists of a concrete layer 1 with an insulating layer 4 thereon and three layers of roofing material 5, 6, and 7 on this insulating layer. The roofing material is covered up by gravel 19. Bracket 9 and support 11 again support the lateral facing strip 12a and the lower cover strip 121;.
The open side of the groove 13 which is formed by the bent upper end of support 11 is now additionally employed for clamping therein the end of the holding bracket 18 which carries the upper cover or cap 17. This cap 17 insures that the edges of the roofing material will be firmly held so that any penetration of moisture in a lateral direction will be absolutely prevented. In addition, another protective sheet 20 may be interposed between roofing layers 5 and 6.
The individual holding members 9, 11 and 18 are illustrated in detail in FIGURES 5a to 5g. FIGURES 5a and 5b show the angular bracket 9 which is to be secured to the concrete layer 1 and carries the support 11 and is for this purpose provided with bores 21 and 22 through which the necessary screws and bolts are inserted. The angular relationship between the two arms of the bracket 9 may also be selected in accordance with the inclination of the roof.
FIGURES 5c, 5d and 56 show the support for securing the lateral facing strip 12a to bracket 9. The upper part of this bracket is bent so as to form a hook with an outwardly opening groove or rabbet 13. The end of this hook has a downward projection 16a behind which the end of the cover strip 12b engages and on which the end of the lateral facing strip is supported.
The front view of the facing support 11 according to FIGURE 5d shows the slots 23 in which the bolts are inserted for connecting the support 11 to the bracket 9. As shown by the cross-sectional view FIGURE 5c, the parts of support 11 containing the slots 23 are stamped to form depressions or grooves in which the slots are located so that the heads of the connecting bolts will be sunk into one side of the facing support 11 and strip 12a will lie fiat 011 this side of its support.
FIGURES 5;) and 5g illustrate the holding bracket 18, one end 24 of which is bent so as to permit it to be clamped into the groove 13 of the facing support 11. One or more additional projections 25 on bracket 18 serve for clamping the additional cover 17, shown in FIGURE 4.
FIGURE 6 shows a covering structure which is similar to that according to FIGURE 4. The differences between the various parts of these two embodiments of the invention may be readily seen when comparing these drawings.
FIGURE 7 shows another modification of the invention in which the cover strip 12 is again associated with an additional upper cap 17. Cap 17 forms a ridge overlying the roofing sheet margin. The cover and facing strips consists in this case of a single piece of material 12 and it is provided with a hook-shaped projection 26 forming a recess 13 into which the lower angular end of the bracket 18 may be inserted upon which the cap 17 is clamped.
FIGURE 8 illustrates a further modification of the protective cover element according to the invention. An angular bracket 9 is also in this case mounted between the concrete ceiling layer 1 and the insulating layer 2 by means of a screw 10 which is screwed into the ceiling 1. Bracket 9 is for this purpose provided with an elongated slot and also with a round bore. Screw 1G is to be inserted through the slot if an insulating layer is provided, as shown in FIGURE 8, whereas the screw is to be inserted through the bore if the roof consists of wood.

to facing support 11. The adjacent sides of the brackets and facing support are provided with corresponding serrations 16 in order to prevent any sliding movements of the bracket and facing relative to each other. The upper end of support 11 projects above the edge of the roof and it is bent so as to be substantially U-shaped and so that the central web 27 of the U extends at an oblique angle to the roof, while the two lateral arms 28 and 29 are substantially parallel to each other.
The cover element 12 is made of such a shape that its vertical facing portion 12a covers the bracket 9 and support 11, while its horizontal cover portion 12b rests on the insulating layer 4. The central part 30 of the cover element 12 is bent in accordance with the U-shaped part of the support 11 which permits the cover element to be slipped from above over this U-shaped part of support 11 until the inner side of the part 31 of the cover element rests fully on the outer side of the part 27 of support 11, while the substantially parallel parts 32 and 33 of the cover element engage with the corresponding parts 28 and 29 of the support.
As may further be seen in FIGURE 8, the cover element 12 is also in this case provided with a horizontal groove 13 and the central web 30 of the U-shaped part of the cover element is extended upwardly and bent over to form a hook-shaped part 34. This hook-shaped part 34 and the groove 13 permit an additional cover or cap 17 to be fitted from above over the main cover element 12 and to be clamped thereto.
The lower end of the vertical part 12a of the main cover element may also be provided with a projection 35 which snaps underneath the lower end of the facing support 11 when the cover element is applied thereon and serves as an additional lock to prevent the cover element from being lifted off the support.
FIGURES 9a to 9 show several detail views of the facing support for stamped cover elements of the type as illustrated in FIGURE 10. The vertical section and the front view according to FIGURES 9a and 9b indicate that the vertical part of support 11 is provided with several vertical ribs 36, the upper ends of which are merged to form one wider rib. These ribs 36 form depressions or grooves on their outer sides in which elongated slots 37 are located to receive the heads of connecting bolts to permit the support to be adjusted to different elevations.
FIGURE shows once more the vertical part of support 11 in cross section, while FIGURES 9d to 9f show a top view, a cross section, and a front view of the angular bracket 9 shown installed in FIGURE 8.
FIGURE 10 finally shows the main cover element 12 which is adapted to be fitted over and clamped upon the facing support 11 according to FIGURES 9a to 90, as shown in FIGURE 8, and the additional cover element 17 which is clamped over the upper part of the main cover element 12 as shown in FIGURE 8. Since these cover elements are preferably stamped of sheet metal or other material which is suitable for being stamped, their shape differs slightly from that of the cover elements as previously described. The vertical facing part 12:! of the cover element 12 is provided with a horizontal, outwardly opening groove 13 which, in turn, has a downwardly extending projection 38 forming a recess in its upper side into which a projection 39 on the facing support 11 according to FIGURE 9a may be inserted. When the additional cover element 17 is fitted over the main cover element 12, its recessed upper part will engage over the hook-shaped end 34 of the element 12, while its lower outer hook-shaped end will engage into the hook-shaped recess which is formed by the groove 13 and the projection 38. The additional cover element 17 will in this manner be securely clamped to the main cover element 12 as shown in FIGURE 8.
Although my invention has been illustrated and de' scribed with reference to the preferred embodiments thereof, I wish to have it understood that it is in no way limited to the details of such embodiments, but is capable of numerous modifications within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully disclosed my invention, what I claim is:
1. A protective roof edging covering the outer free edge of a flat roof, comprising elongated ridge-shaped cover means, outer substantially vertical facing means, and bracket means supporting said facing means in a posi tion extending along the roof edge adjacent to said cover means, said ridge-shaped cover means including one side portion sloping from the ridge downwardly away from said facing means and another side portion sloping downwardly toward said facing means, said facing means have a lower edge and a longitudinal groove spaced upwardly from said facing lower edge and spaced from the roof edge, extending generally horizontally along said facing means adjacent to the side portion of said ridge-shaped cover means sloping downwardly toward said facing means and opening outwardly away from the roof edge, the margin of said cover means side portion sloping downwardly toward said facing means being received in such groove.
2. The protective roof edging defined in claim 1, in which the bracket means includes an angular mounting bracket having a generally horizontal leg secured to the roof and an upright leg, and the facing means includes a support engageable with and elevationally adjustable relative to said bracket means upright leg.
3. The protective roof edging defined in claim 2, in which the facing means support has a serrated upright face adjacent to the bracket means upright leg, and the bracket means upright leg has a serrated upright face complemental to the serrated face of the facing means support, such serrated faces being interengageable in various relatively adjusted positions.
4. The protective roof edging defined in claim '1, and clamping means for clamping the cover means margin in the facing means groove.
5. The protective roof edging defined in claim 1, and a roofing sheet, the cover means including lower elongated ridge-shaped cover means underlying a margin of said roofing sheet and having an inner side portion remote from the facing means and an outer side portion adjacent to the facing means and upper ridge-shaped cover means extending generally parallel to and spaced above said lower cover means and overlying a margin of said roofing sheet, upper cover means having an outer side portion adjacent to the facing means and received in the facing means groove.
6. The protective roof edging defined in claim 5, in which the upper cover means includes a cap overlying the roofing sheet margin and having a margin received in the facing means groove.
7. The protective roof edging defined in claim 5, in which the upper cover means is a flexible sheet and the lower cover means outer side portion .has a margin received in the facing means groove and cooperating with a side of such groove for clamping the margin of the upper cover means in the facing means groove.
8. The protective roof edging defined in claim 5, in which the lower cover means and the facing means are integral.
9. The protective roof edging defined in claim 5, in which the upper cover means includes a cap overlying the roofing sheet margin and bracket means supporting said cap, having a margin received in the facing means groove.
10. The protective roof edging defined in claim 5, in which the lower cover means includes a depending leg between its ridge and its outer side portion, said leg sloping downwardly away from the facing means and having its lower portion resting on the roof surface.

1. A PROTECTIVE ROOF EDGING COVERING THE OUTER FREE EDGE OF A FLAT ROOF, COMPRISING ELONGATED RIDGE-SHAPED COVER MEANS, OUTER SUBSTANTIALLY VERTICAL FACING MEANS, AND BRACKET MEANS SUPPORTING SAID FACING MEANS IN A POSITION EXTENDING ALONG THE ROOF EDGE ADJACENT TO SAID COVER MEANS, SAID RIDGE-SHAPED COVER MEANS INCLUDING ONE SIDE PORTION SLOPING FROM THE RIDGE DOWNWARDLY AWAY FROM SAID FACING MEANS AND ANOTHER SIDE PORTION SLOPING DOWNWARDLY TOWARD SAID FACING MEANS, SAID FACING MEANS HAVE A LOWER EDGE AND A LONGITUDINAL GROOVE SPACED UPWARDLY FROM SAID FACING LOWER EDGE AND SPACED FROM THE ROOF EDGE, EXTENDING GENERALLY HORIZONTALLY ALONG SAID FACING MEANS ADJACENT TO THE SIDE PORTION OF SAID RIDGE-SHAPED
