J. J. TOWER.
PIPE WRENCH. No. 337,894. Patentedr. 16,1886.
NIT-ED STATES -ATENT Erica.
JOHN J. TOVER, OF BROOKLYN, NE\V YORK.
Pl PE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,894, dated March 16, 1886.
Application filed December 11, 1885 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. TOWER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Piperenches, of which the following is a specification.
Pipe wrenches or spanners havebeen made of two bars pivoted together, with jaws at the outer ends at an inclination to the bars, and with chisel-shaped teeth in the opposing faces; but with wrenches adapted to largesized pipes the strain upon the pivotpin is considerable, and the bars are liable to spring up apart laterally and fail to hold the pipe rer liably.
The object of my present invention is to more firmly support the swinging bar at the pivot, so as to prevent the pivot-pin becoming bent, and to lessen the risk of the bars springing apart laterally; and I also provide a handle, by which the wrench or spanner is more readily operated than in the tools of this class heretofore made.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved wrench; and Fig. 2 is an edge view, partially in section, at the joint.
The bar Ahas a jaw, B, at one end, the face of which is at an inclination to the bar, and it is provided with chisel-shaped teeth. At the other end of bar A is a handle, 0, the edges of which are preferably rounded; or the handle may be of wood.
D is a bar having at one end ajaw, E, with a rounded and inclined face, with teeth upon its surface, and at the other end of the bar D is a hole for a pivot-pin, I, and the back end of this barD is an arc of a circle from the cen ter of the pivot-pin. The forward end of the handle portion G, adjacent to the side of the bar A, is made with a segmental recess for the reception of the back end of the bar D, and there may be a flange or lip at 0, extending out and partially covering the side of the bar D at the rear end. It will now be understood handle 0, so that there is very little strain upon the pivot-pin, and the side flange at O aids in holding the swinging bar D toward the bar A, so that the two bars are not liable to be spread apart laterally when in use. The wrench in this form is adapted to the larger sizes of pipes or rods, and when it is desired to adapt the wrench to small pipes or rods the pivot-pin I may be withdrawn, and the bar D and jaw moved along, so that the jaw E approaches the jaw B, and the pivot-pin I can then be inserted into a hole provided for it in the bar A. Under these circumstances the strain will come upon the pivot-pin alone; but in acting upon small pipes or rods the pivot-pin I is usually Sufficient to withstand the strain. It is preferable to make use of a spring at H, the moving end of which presses upon one edge of the bar D, and tends to bring the bar D into line with the bar A.
I claim as my invention- 1. The bar A, with ajaw, B, at one end and a handle, 0, at the other end, in combination with the bar D, having a jaw at one end, a pivot-pin passing through the bar near the other end, and said bar D having its rear end formed as an arc of a circle passing into a correspondingly-shaped recess at the front end of the handle 0, substantially as set forth.
2. The bar A, having ajaw, B, at one end, a handle, 0, at the other end, and a flange, O, at the side of the segmental recessin the front end of the handle 0, in combination with the swinging bar D, having a jaw at one end, the segmental rear end fitting the recess in the end of the handle, and a pivot-pin passing through the bars A and D, substantially as set forth.
3. The bar A, with a jaw, B, at one end, in an inclined position to the bar, and a handle at the other end, in combination with the bar D, having a jaw at one end, and a bearing at the rear end formed as the arc of a circle, and a pivot-pin at the center of the are, the bar A having a correspondinglyshaped bearing for the arc and two or more holes for the pivot-pin, substantially as set forth.
4. The bar A, having ajaw, B, at one end,
a handle, 0, at the other end, a. segmental recess, and. a, flange, 0, adjacent to the recess, and two or more holes for the pivot-pin, in combination with the swinging bar D, haw-- inga jaw at one end, and a segmental rear end fitting the recess, and a movable pivot pin, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 7th dayof December, A.
' JOHN J. TOWER.
