COMBINED WASTEWAY AND DRAIN FOR PONDS.
SECIFIQATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,819, dated March 16, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD M. DILL, of the town of Morgantown, county of Morgan, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in a Combined lVasteway and Drain for Ponds, of which the following is a specication.
The object of my said invention is to provide a combined wasteway and drain for ponds, whereby when an excess of water comes into the pond it will run off through the same drain or ilume that the pond can itself upon occasion be drained through, as will hereinafter be more particularly described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure l is a top or plan view of the edge of a pond where my said invention is employed, Fig. 2, a longitudinal vertical section through the bank of a pond and my improved combined wasteway and drain on the dotted line 2 2; Fig. 3, an end elevation of the same as seen from the dotted line 3 3 in Fig. 2; Fig. 4., a sectional view, looking to the right from the dotted line 4 4 in Fig. 2; and Fig. 5, a horizontal sectional view on the dotted line 5 5.
In said drawings, the portions marked A represent the drain or flume, and B the bank of the pond. The main drain or Hume A has an upwardly-projecting portion, A', which is preferably of about the same height as the bank of the pond. Upon the side of said upwardly-projecting portion nearest the receiving end ofthe fiume is a gate, a, by which the iiow of water is usually cut off. One side of the upper end of the portion A is not planked entirely to the top, thus leaving a space into which the water will run when it rises above the desired height. The upper end is also left open, so as to receive a greater volume of water if it should rise to the full height of said upwardly-projecting portion. These open spaces, as well as the receiving end of the main flume A, are covered with a wire-netting or cross-bars to prevent the tish from being drawn off with the water, my said invention being principally designed for use in connection with fish-ponds. About midway of the bank the Hume is surrounded by a ridge or projecting portion, a, which interrupts the flow of any water which might otherwise follow said flume down along its outer surface, and thus prevents leakage from this source.
The gate a is mounted in suitable slides, a, which renders it practically water-tight.
The bank B is the usual bank of the pond, and is formed in any desired manner.
The iiunie may be constructed of wood` pipe, masonry, or any other desired material, and of the size rendered necessary by the vdesired amount of drainage.
The device being in place and the pond being filled with water, should a freshet occur, or should the pond rise from any other reason, the water will run off through the overflow, as before described.
lVhen it is desired to drain the pond completely' for the removal ofsh, or for any other cause, the gate a is raised, and the drain or ume being at the bottom of the pond it can be drained as dry as desired. In either case the wire-netting or cross-bars provide effectually against the escape of the iish.
The device herein described is much superior to the usual overflow provided at the top of the bank, and the connection of the over flow and lower drain renders the device economical to build.
Having thus fully described my said in vention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A combined wasteway and drain for ponds, consisting of a drain or flume, A, eX- tending out under the bank, a vertical pipe or flume, A', connected to said drain A near its inner end and extending up therefrom, and a gate. a, arranged between the connection ot' said pipe A with said drain A and the inlet to said drain, whereby when it is desired the pond may be easily drained, or when it is tilled to the desired height the eX- cess will iiow into the drain through the vertical pipe, thereby a'dapting said drain for both uses, substantially as set forth.
