JOHN B. THIES, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
REEL FOR FENCE-MAKING lVlACl-HNES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,637, dated March 9, 1886.
Application filed December 15, 1885. Serial No. 185,766. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN B. THIES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reels for Fence-Making Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following s a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective View of my improved wire-reel for fence-making machines, showing it attached to a fence-making machine; and Fig. 2 is a similar view of one of the reels.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
My invention has relation to reels for machines for making picket and wire fences; and it consists in the improved construction and combination ofparts of a reel or coil-holder, which will receive and hold the coil of wire as it comes off from the reels in the rollingmills without requiring any rewinding, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings the letter A indicates an upright having laterally-projecting armsB; which upright and arms, however, may be constructed and arranged in different manners, according to the construction and nature ofthe fence-making machine with which the holder is used. Bars 0, crossing each other and secured to each other at the points where they cross each other, are pivoted upon bolts or pins D, projecting from the framearms, the said arms projecting radially from the center, at which they are pivoted upon the bolt, and the outer portions of the radiating arms are slotted longitudinally, as shown at E. Bolts F, provided with nuts G, and preferably with washers H, slide in these slots and pass through the inner ends of Z-shaped blocks I, which slide With their inwardlypointing lower portions upon the upper sides of the slotted arms, while their upper portions point outward. WVhen a coil of wire is to be placed upon the reel or holder, the nuts upon u the bolts are loosened and the blocks slid inward upon the slots, being preferably at the same time turned with their upper ends inward, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, when the coil may he placed upon the arms and the blocks turned with their upper ends outward and slid outward until the coil is held by the outwardly-projecting upper portions of the blocks, the coil being held between the outer ends of the slotted arms and the ends of the blocks.
It will be seen that the bolts sliding in the slotted arms may be adjusted at any points of the slots, so that a coilof any size maybe held upon the reel, and in this manner the coils may be taken directly from the mill without any necessity of rewinding them, and be placed upon the reels and used in the fence-making machi ne,saving considerably in time and labor.
I am aware that it is not new to construct revolving reels having adjustable arms. and I do not claim such construction, broadly; but
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States-- The combination of a frame pivotally secured upon a suitable support and comprising radiating slotted arms, with Z-shaped blocks mounted thereon 011 pivots adjustable in said slots, as and for the purpose shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN B. THIES.
