BOTTLE STOPPER- No. 337,541. Patented Mar. 9, 1886.

FRANK 0. WHITE, OF WOODBURY, NEW JERSEY.
BOTTL'E-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed January 8, 1886.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK 0. WHITE, of Woodbury, in the county of Gloucester and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification, refcrence being had to the annexed drawings, form ing a part thereof, in which Figure 1 is aside elevation of a part of a bottle, showing the application ofmy improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a bottle-stopper, showing the neck of the bottle in section.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondiug parts in both figures of the drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, secure, inexpensive, and easily-operatedistopper for bottles containing effervescing liquids; and itconsists in the combination, with abottle having lugs formed on or attached to the opposite sides of the neck thereof, ofa ring surrounding the bottle-neck provided with spiral cams and diametrically-opposite ofl'sets, and arranged to engage the lugs projecting therefrom, and a bail carrying an elastic stopper, and having its ends received v in opposite sides of the ring.
The neck A of the bottle to which my improved stopper is applied is provided on diametrically opposite sides, and at a short dis tance from the mouth of the bottle, with short lugs a, which are preferably formed in the process of blowing the bottle. A ring, B, surrounds the bottle-neck below the lugs a, and t is provided on its upper edge with two oppositely-arranged spiral cams, b, terminating at t their higher ends at the stops 0, and begin- 4 ning at the lower ends at the offsets d, which are formed in diametrically-opposite sides of i the ring B to permit of slipping the ring over the lugs a on the sides of the bottleneck.
To the mouth of the bottle is fitted an elastic stopper, 0, formed of the plate 6, having on the top thereof the studf, and provided 5 on its under surface with a stud for receiving and retaining the elastic ring 9. A bail, D,
having its ends turned inward at right angles I and entering holes in the offset portions of the Patent No. 337,541, dated March 9, 1886.
Serial No. 187,997. (No model.)
ring B, has in the middle thereof a loop, h,
which receives the stud f projecting from thewhen the offset parts of the ring B are opposite the lugs, and will prevent the ring from slipping from the neck of the bottle. The ring Bis put in its position on the bottle when the bail D is detached from it, and by inserting the ends of the bail D in their place in the ring the ring will be secure. The stopper 0 is clamped in its place in the mouth of the bottle by bringing the spiral cams 1), formed on the ring B, into engagement with the lugs a on opposite sides of the neck, and turning the ring under the lugs, causing it to draw the bail D downward and force the stopper 0 into the mouth of the bottle. The stopper is released by turning the ring B in the opposite direction and then swinging the bail to one side, as shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, what claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1., The combination, with a bottle-neck provided with the lugs a, of the ring B, having the spiral cams [2 formed thereon, and provided with offsets (Z, the bail D, and the elastic stopper 0, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the ring B, having formed thereon the spiral cams b, and provided with offsets (Z, the bail D, having its ends bent inward and passing into the offsets d, the elastic stopper 0, formed of the plate 6 and the soft rubber ring g, and the bottle A, provided with lugs a, substantially as herein shown and described.
FRANK 0. WHITE.
