SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,481, dated March 9. 1886.
Application filed November 19, 1885.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL CLUNE, a resident of Indianapolis, Indiana, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Bed- Lonnges, a description of which is set forth in the following specification, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in the several figures of which like letters indicate like parts.
My invention relates to the construction of bed-lounges in which frames composed of two parts or sections are adapted to be folded over the one upon the other, with a receptacle for holding the bed-clothing contained therein when it is desired to use it as a lounge, and to be opened out to form a bed by throwing one of the folding sections opposite the other and allowing it to rest upon the floor, the two sections parallel with each other, as will be understood from the following description.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front side view of the frame closed up. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front side view, the top being thrown up oft the sections of the folding frame and standing in a vertical position. Fig. 4 is an end view of the same. Fig. 5 is a top view when the top is thrown off from the folding frame and stands in a vertical position, the two parts of the folding frame being opened and in position to form the bed, the bolster-irons being also shown in proper position. Fig. 6 is an end view of the same. Fig. 7 is a detail View of the end of the frame to'which the bolster-iron is attached, the dotted lines indicating the position of the bolster-iron when folded up preparatory to closing the lounge.
In detail, it is the top, which is hinged to the under side and at the end of the lower por- This top is rectangular, and, when it is upholstered, forms the cushion of the lounge, while below this it is like a box, so that it will pass down over and inclose the folded sections of the frame, as shown in Fig. 1. This top t is conveniently hinged to the end of the frame f in any suitable way, but preferably by means of a hinge, which will allow one leaf or strap to be freely removed from the pintle, so that the top may be freed from the rest of the lounge when it is to be used as a bed.
The upper section, b, of the folding frame Serial No. 183,285. (No model.)
is provided with a bottom of sacking or wood,
h to the lower section,f, as shown in Figs. 4
and 5. The lower section, f, is also provided with legs or feet 1, which rest upon the floor. The upper section, b, when opened, rests directly on the floor parallel with the lower section, and may be mounted upon casters, if desired. At one end of each of the folding section's, preferably at the end opposite to that to which the topt is hinged, are fixed bolster-irons 1', having bearings in staples fixed in the sides of the frame, as shown in Fig. 5. When the lounge is opened out to form a bed,
these bolster-irons are thrown over the end of the lounge-frame, taking the position shown in Fig.5. When the lounge is to be closed up, the irons are thrown backward and downward, taking the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 7. They are supported when opened out by a strip projecting from the frame, so that the iron forms an incline, as
shown in Fig. 7, making aconvenient position for the reclining head of the sleeper.
To close up thelonnge, the ironsz' are thrown down and inward, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 7. The section b is then folded over upon the section f, the bedding folded and placed in the receptacle provided by the box part of section b. The top tis then let down over both the folded sections, completely inclosing them and forming a solid front, as shown in Fig. 1, the hinges which connect the folding sections being inclosed within the box portion of the top.
By this construction the front of the lounge presents a solid appearance, and it may be fashioned in a more permanent and tasteful manner than is possible where the upholstering or finishing is placed directly upon the folded sections and over the hinges, as is commonly done in lounges of this class. At the same time the bedding is completely and securely inclosed within the parts, and the upholstering for the bed is formed upon the folding frame alone, while the upholstering for the lounge-seat is upon the independent top t, which comes down over and incloses the folding frame, and the lounge is much more substantial and ornamental when completed in accordance with the construction herein shown.
I am aware that bed-lounges composed of folding sections and provided with a receptacle within for the bed-clothing are old, and that bedsteads combined with wardrobes, as shown in Letters Patent No. 189,776, dated April 17, 1877, are not new.
I am also aware of the bed-lounge shown in Letters Patent No. 230,545, dated July 27, 1880, issued to Graves, and also Letters Patent No. 244,329,issued to Snyder and Krause July 12, 1881, and the devices therein contained, and I do not claim these as my invention. However, my invention differs in this in being provided with a third top part, which is adapted to completely inclose the folding sections of the ordinary bed-lounge whose sides are hinged together and adapted to be opened outward to form the bed. This top folding section can be raised to a vertical position when desired, or may be taken entirely off from the folding sections. This advantage enablesme to dispense entirely with a headboard such as that shown in Gravess device, and to employ the topinclosing section to completely cover both the folding parts of an ordinary bed-lounge wherein the sections are hinged together at the side, and differs materially from those which require the adjustment of head and foot loards or the sliding of one part within another. This inclosing top also presents a smooth and uniform finish to the front, which is not presented in bedlounges of the other patterns referred to, and at the same time keeps out the dirt and dust from the bed-clothing, and I am not dependent upon any hooks or hinges to keep the top sections down upon the other parts; but
\Vhat I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following:
1. In abed-lounge,a folding frame composed of upper and lower sections hinged together at the sides, so that one part may be folded over upon the other to form a lounge, and a third section adapted to inclose the sections thus folded one upon the other, the top of which is intended to be upholstered to compose the lounge-seat, all combined substantially as described.
2. The bed-lounge herein described, composed of the lower section, f, and the upper section, b, hinged thereto, and forming a receptacle for the bedclothing when folded up, the bolster-irons t, hinged to said folding parts, forming an incline for the support of the head, and the third top section, 13, hinged to the end of the partf, all combined substanrially as described.
3. Abed-lounge composed of the two folding sections 1) and f, hinged together at the sides, the part 2) providing areceptacle for the bedclothes, the top section, t, adapted to be let down over and inclose the folding sections b and f, and to be raised to a vertical position to expose the said folding sections, all combined substantially as described.
4. A bed-lounge composed of two sections hinged together, adapted to be folded one upon the other to close the lounge, the top section when so folded providing a receptacle for the bed-clothing withinit, in combination with a third section whose top forms thelounge-seat and whose sides are adapted to be let down upon and over to inclose the folding sections, all combined substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have set my hand this 16th day of November, 1885.
