W. ROYCE.
STOP VALVE FOR WATER AND GAS MAINS.
Patented Mar. 9,- 1886. 3
N. PETERS, Pholo-Lfllmgmphen Washmgkm. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WESLEY ROYCE, OF TOLEDO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOSEPH F. KILBY,
' OF SANDUSKY, OHIO.
STOP-VALVE FOR WATER AND GAS MAINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,438, dated March 9, 1886.
Application filed December 5, 1885. Serial No. 184,783.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WESLEY RoYcE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, Lucas county, Ohio, have invented new and 5 useful Improvements in Stop-Valves for Water and Gas Mains, of which the following is a specification.
My improvements relate to the form of said valve and the seat thereof, and the relation of surfaces of valve and seat to each other, and
a means of causing said surfaces to clean them-- selves by use.
In stop or gate valves heretofore in use, in which wedge-shaped or beveled valves and r seats are employed, and in many other forms of stop or gate valves, accumulations of sediment occur by reason of the compression of sediment between the valve and seat when the valve is forced into place, and by reason of the valve and seat failing to clear themselves when operated, causing the valves in time to leak and injuring the parts by cutting of sand and grit.
The objects of my invention are to obviate 2 5 these objections and to construct avalve which will not pack sediment and which will clear itself when being opened or closed. I attain these objects by means of the mechanism hereinafter described, and shown in the accompany- 0 ing drawings, made part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a central transverse elevation of my device with case A in section. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is a plan view on line 00 x. 5 Like letters refer to like parts in all figures.
(No model.)
and retracted by the usual screw, E, and is provided with parallel annular faces d d, which slide upon faces a 0. Both the inner and outer edges of said faces d d are provided with sharp corners d d, so that when the annular faces of valve D are moved in either direction upon the annular faces of seat 0 O the edges of the parallel surfaces in contact act like shears and cut any obstruction in the port of said valve, and sediment or other foreign substance, which may have accumulated from disuse or long standing on annular faces of valve and seat, is cut and scraped off by edges 0 c and (1 cl, the valve and seat being thus self-cleaning.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The seat 0 O and valve D, provided with annular surfaces 0 c d (1, having cutting-edges on those portions of both the exterior and interior surfaces thereof which pass by each other, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
WESLEY ROYCE.
