STOPPER-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,202, dated March 2, 1886.
Application filed December 9,1885. Serial No. 185,152. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. SEY- MOUR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Wheeling, in the county of Ohio, in the State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Stopper-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in devices for holding the stoppers in bottles, and at the same time to afford cautionary notice of the contents of the bottle; and the object is to provide a detachable bottle-fastener iith a caution label or tag applied thereto, thus preventing use of the contents of the bottle without first removing the fastener, and having the attention directed to the caution on the tag.
The fastener is specially designed to be used on dispensing-bottles containing poison, since by applying the fastener'and tag the liability to inadvertently or mistakenly dispense poisonous drugs in compounding medicines is lessened, attention being required to remove the fastening, and the tag being labeled gives additional guaranty and caution.
I attain the purposes of my invention by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a view showing it applied to the neck of a bottle and stopper, and Fig. 3 is a view of a modification of the device.
The letter A designates the device, which is comprised of a flat-metal band or springwire, a, bent into lyre-shape constituting a spring-clip adapted to be pushed over the neck of the bottle below the flange of the mouth, and be held in position by the action of the spring after the ends have passed beyond the neck. To the middle of the bend or curve of this spring-clip is rigidly secured a connecting plate or piece, a, which is formed with a bend or recess, o in its middle designed andadapted to set over the flange of the mouth, and to the upper part of this piece a is secured the spring-clip a which in shape conforms in shape to the base spring-clip a, but generallyis made smaller in cross-section than that, in order to adapt it to clip the neck of the stopper. From the recess in the connecting-plate of the clips is suspended a cautiontag, a. This is preferably made of a small metal plate, upon which is laid a caution-label, either containing the word poison, or such other caution as the character of the drug shall require.
If it is required to apply the fastener to a flat stopper, or to one that cannot be grasped by the spring-clip, the construction is modified by simply extending the connecting-link forward and adapting it to set on the top of the stopper, the tag being hung from the recess on the strap, as stated heretofore and sub stantially as shown in Fig. 3.
The fastener is applied by pushing it in place, and it is removed by pulling it off, either by the tag or by grasping the catch between the thumb and finger of the hand.
The fasteners are made of different sizes to suit difierent-sized bottles and stoppers.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The stopper-fastener herein described, comprised of the lyre shaped spring clip adapted to set over and grasp the neck of the bottle, a rigid plate fixed to the middle or bend of the spring-clip, and formed with a recess to fit over the flange of the mouth of the bottle, and a spring to bear on the stopper,
substantially as described.
2. The stopperfastener consisting of a lyre-shaped spring-clip to set about the neck of the bottle, a vertical connecting-piece secured to the spring-clip formed with a seat or recess to set over the flange of the mouth of the bottle, and the lyre-shaped spring-clip secured to the upper end of the connectingpiece, and adapted to set about the neck of the stopper of the bottle, substantially as described.
3. The stopper-fastener consisting of the lyre-shaped spring-clip to set about the neck of the bottle, a vertical connecting-piece secured to the spring-clip, and formed with a seat or recess to set over the flange of the mouth of the bottle and receive a caution=t-ag,
