SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,951, dated March 2, 1886.

Application filed December 7, 1885. Serial No. 185,029.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I. FREDERICK SANDER- SON. a citizen of the United States, residing at Prospect Park, in the county of Du Page and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin Carpet-Covers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improved molding of the general form (in its transverse section) of a quadrant, but having a part of itself cut away along a part of one of its plane faces parallel to such face, such cutting extending to the convex side ofthe molding. This molding is nailed to the lower part of the baseboard of the room, the uncut face being placed against the base-board, and the uncut part of the other face resting on the floor. Thus a space is left between the molding and the floor to receive the edge of a carpet. The cutting of the molding is made deep enough to receivev the thickest carpets.

I refer to the drawings accompanying this specification and forming a part thereof.

Figure 1 is a top view of a portion of the floor of a room, showing acarpet whose edges are covered by my improved molding. A is the carpct, B the molding, O the base-board, and b the tacks fastening the carpet.

Fig. 2 isa vertical sect-ion of the lower part of a room, showing the carpet A, my improved molding B, the baseboards O, the floor D, and thecarpet-tacks b.

Fig. 3 is a vertical section of my improved molding and a portion of the carpet covered by the same.

When my improved molding is used, the edge of the carpet need not be bound. Car- (No model.)

pet-tacks can be driven at such distance from the wall as to avoid damage to the base-board and fingers.

My improved molding covers and conceals the edges of the carpet, and thus secures an appearance of neatness and finish to the room that cannot be obtained in any other way. The space under the molding is practically filled by any thickness of carpet. It costs no more than other molding of like kind.

I do not claim a molding designed to be taken up and put down with the carpet, but a rabbeted molding designed to be permanent when once attached to a building.

My molding is not designed to fasten the carpet down. It is designed only to cover the edge of the carpet.

Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot' the United States, is

l. Nailed to the base-board O, the molding B, constructed to reach the floor D along the having a part cut away from the rest of the base of such molding parallel to such base, so as to admit the margin of a carpet under a part of such molding, substantially as set forth. 1

2. The molding B, with a cutting made from the outer part of the base of such molding parallel to such base, as and for admitting and covering the edge of a carpet in manner substantially as described.
